Serve one year for killing someone?

What a bunch of poop! This is more like a murder!

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colorado (AP) -- A teenager who allegedly hit a cyclist while driving and text messaging was charged with a misdemeanor, authorities said.

The 17-year-old was charged with careless driving causing death, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said. The charge carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison.

The victim, Jim R. Price, 63, was riding his bicycle November 23 when he was hit by the teen's car, said Lt. Alan Stanton, a spokesman for the sheriff's office. Price died two days after the accident. (Read))

The teen has not been identified because he is a minor.

Authorities said he lost control of the car because he was sending text messages on a cell phone. He was issued a summons and ordered to appear in court, authorities said.

The amount of time I spent in law school made me realize one thing...many of the laws are made as a matter of public policy...but the enforcement is rather arbitrary...

I think as a matter of public policy...this kid should be made an example of...

driving and cell phone use is dangerous....driving and text messaging is unconscionable.

Driving is a right, not a privilege...and people need to focus on the 4000 pound weapons they are driving...this kid killed a man, which may be hard to live with...but making an example of him to other teens may be the only good thing to come out of a senseless death.

Untill states pass laws banning cell phones while driving , this is ALL they can charge him with . It has become an epidemic . I've seen a lot of near-misses myself due to someone yaking on a phone , and I'll bet I'm not alone on this one.

Which begs the Q - what ever happened to 2 hands on the wheel ?

What I do not get is why they cannot charge him with something more. Before cell phones if you lost control of your car and killed someone because you were not properly handling a deadly machine they did nothing?

They can give it whatever name they want...it technically is still manslaughter...

unfortunately, the DA has the power to charge and recommends the sentence....so in this case...the DA is the pinhead.

Sounds to me like this kid's parents probably have some influential friends.  It's hard to believe he didn't get charged with at least manslaugher without a little help.

I saw a guy in his car last night literally weaving all over his lane, his phone in front of his face, jerking it around like he was having a seizure, with a totall disregard for where his car was or the lcoation of anyone around him. People nowadays are so wrapped up in their own little lives, it just becomes that much more apparent when they get behind the wheel.

I've seen some research on cell phones / cars .   You get " tunnel vision " when your on it .  It's like when police are in a hi-speed chase , they litteraly have no idea what is going on around them as their mind gets 'affixed to the car their after , thats why when theres a wreck the cops say  " I didn't see that innocent pedestrian / car " , they are telling the truth !
