Song-Induced Memories

Don Henley's "Taking You Home" came on tonight. It had been quite a while since I heard that song, but it bought back a nice memory. Summer of 2000 I think.

Me and a bunch of friends were at Summerfest here in town. That particular day was rainy; I believe it was the final day of The Fest, I was pretty Fested out. Too many people in our group drinking too much beer, too much indecision "lets go here, no, wait, lets walk here, why?" 1/2 went home, couldn't stand the weather, the other have just was just walking in circles with their heads up their butts.

The bottom line is that I finally said, (to myself) "screw it, you all are ruining my day" and I walked off and got a bleacher seat for Don Henley in the rain. Only me in the section, center stage, 2nd last row, soaking wet, stupid drunk, and it was one of the best shows I had ever seen. No friends there to be distracted with singing along, talking, milling about, just me the rain, the beer, the music. And I am not a BIG henley fan or even an Eagles fan. But this particular night, everything was brilliant- the lighting, the rain, the pace of the show, the song choices.

I think this was a first step towards me being an independent person, thinker. I didn't need the group I clung to, and clung to me in our 20's.

Even better than the Eagles reuinion show 2 summers later!

This song reminded me of that night. A good night. Thanks to the requestor!

Synchronicity II by The Police came on near midnight on wednesday. I was drawn back....to 1994. Saw Sting in concert. He came out and for the first 3 songs was all into that pleasant Englishman in New York white wine stuff. Song 4. All lights are killed. Then a spotlight flashing from the stage over the audience. Then these huge red flags were dropped & draped behind the stage. Then all sorts of sirens and spotlights go off. Synchronicity II starts. And Sting was Sting of The Police again!

Blue Oyster Cult!

My buddy Ron's older brother, who absolutey fried his brain on drugs in the 70's 80's 90's and probably today even, once told me " I would pay $200 to see Blue Oyster Cult play again. I love them that much." Well they've come twice to our state fair in recent years, free with the price of gate admission. He wasn't there either time, and both times I let him know there's a spot in the car if he wanted to go. Sad.

But if they come again next year, I will still let him know.

Happy Together by the Turtles reminds me of losing some piece of fruit!

The song was playing at that moment! The guy was a jerk, but the song is still catchy!

I know I will think of more, but that one came to mind first.

I had just got Van Halen's Balance CD right before a field trip to Brookfield Zoo in Chicago (JD, keep your friggin age comments to yourself) and listened to it the whole way, and now when I hear any of the songs off of that, I think of that trip. The friends I hung out with during that trip was the friends I kept all through high school.

I won the Foo Fighters The Colour and the Shape CD from a radio contest. Well, actually, I didn't technically win it. They were having a contest for tickets to see Pearl Jam (I think) where you would sign up, and then they would call someone's name, and you had so much time to call in to win the tickets. I had just shut the radio off, when my best friend at the time called me and said, "They just called your name!" So I called the radio station right back. Apparently, they called someone's name who sounded very close to mine, but wasn't me, but the DJ felt bad about it and gave me the CD. This was right before my first trip to Key West, and I played the CD the whole way there. Now whenever I hear any of the songs from it, I think of that trip.

An ex-boyfriend gave me Sting's Ten Summoners Tales, so of course, when I hear any songs off of that album, especially If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, I always think of him.

This one is weird. After my mom died we went to Florida. Don Henley's Dirty Laundry came on and my dad got real offended by the words. People die they leave.... Anyway, everytime I hear that song, I think of my dad.

Oh well, JD had good intentions, but our threads always seem to head south!

Ok, Here is a for real one,

Everytime I hear Bad English "When I see you Smile" I think of one of my best friends. We used to sit in our small town pizza parlor and have pastys, play pin ball and the juke box. Of course thats where the two cute girls worked...

Elton John - Daniel

I delivered the Indianapolis Star as a kid. It's the morning paper. I would get up at 4:50 then I'd wake up my brother. Then I'd pick up the papers at the curb and bring them into the garage and count them.
I had a little yellow transistor radio that I would listen to while doing this. Usually my brother was 5-10 minutes getting ready before coming out to deliver the papers. I would look at the headlines and look over the sports page.
In the summer between my 7th & 8th grade year I was doing the typical morining routine until I saw the headline that Steve Mulinaro was killed while riding his mini-bike. I was in total shock. This kid was a bully and jerk but at that moment I felt very sorry for him. An officer had stopped him 15 minutes earlier and told him to put on a helmet if he was going to ride. Well Steve didn't and that same officer was the first on the scene after he was struck by a car.

Daniel was playing on the radio and ever since that day every time I hear it I think of Steve.

A couple of days later I was cutting grass and I see a hearse and funeral procession, it was Steve.

It's as clear today as it was then.

Don Henley's A Month Of Sundays- back to the show I mentioned above. Perfect rain song.

The big boys, they all got computers:

Got incorporated, too

Me, I just know how to raise things

That was all I ever knew

Now, it all comes down to numbers

Now I’m glad that I have quit

Folks these days just don’t do nothin’

Simply for the love of it
