Mike Sherman

I remember when Coach Mike Sherman was hired to coach the Green Bay Packers...Everyone said "Mike who?"

I read a story about him that gave me an insight into his character. A little boy asked for his autograph, and Sherman said he would give him the autograph if he could have the little boy's in return. Sherman said the little boy should do his best in school and everything else and he (Sherman) would be proud to have that autograph.

The man is a positive motivator. This year's record was not indicative of his first 5 years. This team never quit on him...it was just depleted by injuries. This was never used as an excuse. Character counts...and though this is a bottom line business...character is what turns around difficult situations...not dim witted boneheads like GM Ted Thompson, who barely can string 2 complete sentences together.

I sense a little frustration in your post D.

I think this is Thompsons way of saying "let's move on". I think he want's Favre to walk away, but wouldn't dare tell him to walk away because he knows the fans would have his head.

I liked Mike Sherman as a person, but I'm not sad to see him go. He was a great coach. One of three coaches the Packers have had that made it to the playoffs five times in his reign. Unfortunately he's the only one of the three that never made it to a Super Bowl.

You and I have talked about this. He got the most from his players and seemed to have them playing above their ability. But in the playoffs that always gets exposed.

Maybe the next coach will be a harsher judge of talent, so when they get to the playoffs they play like they belong there.

I'm sure Mike will be just fine, he's gonna be a good coach for another club. Maybe Minnesota!

The Packers had a tough year with injuries galore. That can not be the fault of the coach. I am suprised they did not give him one more year to recover.

I would say that yes, the cards were stacked against Sherman since week one and got worse and worse with each injury. I think he probably has a big heart and is tooo good and decent of a person for this league. We need a bit of a hard-nosed bastard in there. A Machievelli- "It is better to be feared than loved".

Speaking of noses, I felt the last couple of seasons, Sherman kept his buried tooo deeply in that danged offensive playbook, rather than keeping his eyes on the field. That'll ruin ya.
