SAN FRANCISCO - A 106-year-old widow and her much younger caretaker died together in an apparent suicide pact at the home they shared, police said.
The bodies of Helen Godet and her friend and caretaker of nine years, David Lund, were found Friday along with suicide notes indicating that Lund strangled the woman after she decided she could not take her own life, Inspector Dennis Maffei said Tuesday.
Lund, who was in his early 30s, then swallowed a fatal dose of antifreeze, authorities said. The notes were dated Dec. 27.
"There are indications that it was going to be a double suicide, but she couldn't force herself to drink the poison, so he killed her and then drank the poison," Maffei said.
Both notes, which were taped to the closed door of a bedroom where the bodies were discovered, were in Lund's handwriting and indicated "that their time had come," Maffei said. Godet apparently signed one note.
However, police were investigating the case as a murder-suicide, he said, adding that a motive was not immediately known.
"Did she know what she was signing at 106 years old? I don't know," Maffei said. "She was definitely killed at the hands of another, so we have to assume it was a murder."
Witnesses told homicide detectives that Godet _ whose husband died in 1970 and who never had children _ and Lund had been inseparable after meeting nine years ago. Lund slept on the sofa in Godet's house.
"I was told they had a different kind of relationship _ platonic, but affectionate," Maffei said.
I don't even begin to know where you guys come up with finding this stuff. But then again, I don't watch a lot of TV. I do read the Newspaper, but usually only the Headlines, then local and business sections.
When I log into comcast to check my emails is where most of the news stories come from or cnn.com. I majored in Political Science (fries with that?) but I feel the need to keep abreast of the world news.
I've always been addicted to weird news. CNN has a weird news section, both AP and Reuters have an oddly enough, and many international papers have some weird news.
I think that if this lady had made it to 106 years old, why suddenly decide to commit suicide, I think it sounds more like murder to me, obviously this guy is just a bit sick!
I don't know... imagine all the changes that woman has seen in her life. Perhaps she just decided that this is not a world she wanted to continue living in. Maybe she was sick, or bored, or sick of being bored. As for the guy... drinking antifreeze? That is a horrible way to go. Of all the possible ways one could off one's self, why that???

My friend had a cat that drank antifreeze once, It was about 2 degrees outside and when he opened the door to let the cat back in, it just sat there and stared at him. He bent down to pick it up and the poor kitty was stiff as a rock, looked like a stuffed cat.
I guess it tastes sweet and makes you just go to sleep from what I hear.

When I was a kid I had a cat named Bones who died the same way. It was horrible. We didn't know what was wrong with him, so Mom took him to the vet. The vet thought it was hairballs and gave him a laxative. My sister took him back later in the afternoon when we got home from school... the problem was that the antifreeze crystalized his kidneys. That had to be massively painful.
