The Beatles or The Stones?

This is a tough either/or. I love both, but I guess I will go with the Beatles. There lyrics are very profund, for the most part, and their music timeless.

I do love the Stones and remember very fondly watching their movie in theatres when I was younger. They even sing a song about me!

Well, I guess since Hermans Hermits aren't on here I would have to go with the Beatles.

JD what about

Let it be

Elanor Rigby

Paperback Writer

Hey Jude

and the list goes on, put them up against some of the stones tracks and see who wins!

Don't get me wrong I do like the Stones but the Beatles are just better superior to me.

Beatles

You really are one or the other.  Regardless, they're fantastic choices.

Apples & oranges.  Both are great.

Comparing song to song, it's a tough choice, but all in all, I like a bigger percentage of the Beatles songs than the Stones.

Both are strong bands. I think it may depend on which way your taste in music goes. You have to admit that they are two totally different types of bands and music.

Beatles for me although I really like the Stones.

With the Stones still churning out the songs since the Beattles split they have another 30 years of music. If the Beatles had stayed together who knows what kind of music we would have today.

I'm with Lady Strange. A's and O's but both are great!

I will agree that Hey Jude and Let It Be are probably the best 2 songs ever written.

When the Beatles get to the NANA NA NA part in Hey Jude, you can just tell how amazed they are at how awesome the song is- as if it became more than they expected it to be before they recorded it....

BUT

Nothing quite gets me goin like Sticky Fingers by the Stones....probably my favorite album first song through last.....

Do not overlook that the stones still put on the BEST live show that you will probably ever see. Granted....it will cost you $250 or so, but you will emerge going "I would have gave them $500 that.

While I'm thinking of it, my friend Jill got in for $20 to the Milwaukee show.....just found someone on the street selling a fistfull of tickets before the show started and offered $20 for one. It was in the nosebleeds, but still others bought through ticketmaster for the same seats were $99.

From a musicians stand point...I will always prefer the Beatles....they toured the first 4 years (7 if you count the Hamburgh years) and spent the last 4 or 5 years in the studio.

Their American tours were total mania, so it isnt fair to commpare their stage shows to today's bands...but they did have stage presence.

They used the whole sound spectrum recording their last 4 albums...pushing the envelope on the technology of the day.

Even their early work had such a joy to it...just conveyed the feeling they were happy to be playing.

There wouldnt even be a Stones if the Beatles hadnt dominated the American Charts... the Stones would just be another English pub band.

JD, you trot out a couple of silly songs they did...but in fairness....the Beatles music was so well rounded...they have music for every genre.

I always wonder what they could have done if they would have stayed together.

When I think of "the" rock-n-roll sound of guitar, its the one that comes from Richard's hands. He'll be the first to admit he copped every lick Chuck Berry invented, but what he did with that, how he evolved that into his signature brutal, boozy, electrified, melodic sound is just amazing. SOme of the best Feel Good music ever written came from him. Tumbling Dice, Brown Sugar, JJ Flash........

No doubt the stones have a huge presence in rock and roll....longevity is a big indicator that this group knows how to get a crowd moving.

I just think the beatles were a good rock band but evolved into so much more

You know, I actually prefer the early Beatles stuff. "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" "Twist and Shout" "She Loves You"....

I think that from a historical perspective, if you were around to first hear the Beatles when they first aired on the radio, that must have been absolutely mind-blowing. You'd never heard rock & roll before, post-swing era radio was all crap like "How Much Is That Doggie in The Window" and then one day you hear "I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAAAAAAAAAND!!!!!" Just that release, that place to put out all that repressed energy, music to scream and dance too, a new melody.....I would have loved to been around to have witnessed that for myself.

I feel the same way about "Good Golly Miss Molly" by Little Richard. That song still sends shivers through me when I think "and then one day this crazy fellow in a pink suit with a a leapord collar was jumpin on his piano WOOHOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOO"!
