New Packer Head Coach

Packers choose Niners' McCarthy

Okay Packer fans, what are your thoughts about your new coach?

Packers choose 49ers' offensive coordinator

The Green Bay Packers have chosen their successor to Mike Sherman and are currently in negotiations to hire their new man.

The Packers have selected 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy as their head coach after a tremendous interview on Sunday afternoon. The team called the other candidates early Wednesday to inform them they had made their choice. McCarthy was the team's quarterbacks coach in 1999 where he coached Brett Favre under Ray Rhodes.

McCarthy was hired last year as Mike Nolan's offensive coordinator after serving in the same role under Jim Haslett in New Orleans. The two sides are scheduled to continue negotiations through the night in order to have a deal finalized by Thursday morning.

The team also interviewed coaches such as the Cowboys' Sean Payton, the Chargers' Wade Phillips, their current defensive coordinator Jim Bates, Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera among others.

McCarthy has coached a solid pedigree of quarterbacks including Favre, Rich Gannon, Aaron Brooks, Jake Delhomme and this past year No. 1 pick Alex Smith.

Wow Fuzz, I didn't even know about this yet,

I'm taken a bit off gaurd, I don't have an opinion on the guy yet. But I hope this guy is a West Coast offense guy so that Favre might stick around.

You know, he might turn out to be a great coach, but there will be a learning curve and this just tells me we're even further from truly contending again.

I don't know what it is about Wisconsin sports teams, but we just love to be the land of first chances.

Other than George Karl I can't remember the last time we got a coach that actually had experience.

I mean, the Brewers haven't hired a manager with even a single days experience in over two decades.

Just once I'd like to see us get a known commodity instead of having to close our eyes and hope for the best.

I like that he was Brett's coach for the 99 season. There must be some sort of comoraderie there.

I'd say this affects me, but he could be Joe Schmo. I don't know who he is, what he can do, or anything.

I just hope we win.

That's all.

First Ruby...let me just say PHhhhhhhhhhhhhtttttttt

Now on to McCarthy...

First let me say that I was a big Mike Sherman fan....the guy had 5 winning seasons and then has a bad season due to injury....this just stinks of the GM wanting his iwn guy.

Secondly, I feel bad for Jim Bates...he is 60 years old and has done a tremendous job with our defense. He may not get a shot at an NFL head job because of his age.

On to McCarthy....Favre was off the leash in 99, the Year Ray Rhodes was head coach. So I wonder whether McCarthy was a good influence...but he has a rep for dealing with QB's effectively.

He is a disciple of the West Coast offense, so that means it wont be a deterrent for Brett to come back.

I didnt know alot about Sherman when he was hired. So I will have to give Thompson the packers GM, the benefit of the doubt on this one. He is definitely on the hot seat and the clock is running...he had done little to plug the holes last off season and now he has his own head coach in place....his finger prints are all over this club...so he has to be accountable.

If this guy is a bust, then the GM is a bust. He'd better know what he's doing is all I have to say.

Except for this. The Bears still suck.

the only reason the bruins have a division title is 'cause the rest of the teams suck more than they do.
