Let's talk about breast

FEEDING! Get your mind out of the gutter.  I wanted to post something about this awhile back, we had a local case here, where a lady was told she could not use the dressing room at Victoria Secret's to breast feed. They told her to go to the public bathroom. Now the store has a breast feeding area! Ironic huh!

Anyway- as long as you are covered- I think you can and should breast feed anywhere! Speaking from experience, this is one of the best things you can do for a child and should never be discouraged!

Pool Area Not For Breastfeeding, Ann Arbor Woman Told
YMCA Rule Concerns Food, Drink By Pool And Distraction To Lifeguards

POSTED: 4:12 pm EST January 11, 2006

An Ann Arbor woman says she was asked to stop breastfeeding her baby in public at an area YMCA. Now she hopes by speaking out, the gray line about breast-feeding in public is eliminated.

On Dec. 22, Kelly Fuks took her 6-month-old daughter, Ansley, and her 3-year-old son, Maxwell, to the swimming area of the YMCA in Ann Arbor.

According to Fuks, a lifeguard of the YMCA approached her and told her she could not breast-feed by the pool.

"Ansley is a paid member of the YMCA too," Fuks said.

Senior Programs Director at the YMCA Diane Carr said there is no food or water allowed in the pool area and exceptions cannot be made.

"It's difficult to be able to make exceptions and then be able to enforce them," Carr told The Ann Arbor News.

Fuks later contacted the Y by telephone and told the newspaper that the reason she was told breast-feeding by the pool was not allowed was that it created a distraction to lifeguards.

"I think they have a bad policy and place a burden on people with small children," Fuks said.

Linda Wieser, liaison for the La Leche League, told The Ann Arbor News that the situation is not uncommon.

"People assume there are laws to these things, but there really are not," she said.

Michigan exempts breast-feeding from its public nudity statute, but it does not protect a woman's right to breast-feed in public places.

The YMCA does allow breast-feeding in other areas where parents and children are permitted to be together, including the locker rooms and lobby.

You know, I hate to admit it, but it kind of does.

I mean, I have no problem with it, after all, it's what the breast was made for! But as a guy I find it to be an awkward moment.

It's hard not to watch, and if you even glance over you feel like a perv, so it just makes me uncomfortable.

But hey, that's my problem, I think women should be allowed to breast feed in public any time they want, as long as it's not in an inappropriate setting.

Breast feeding in public does not bother me, but I do think it's common courtesy to drape a towel or blanket over yourself. I think some women just let it all hang out because they can or just to make other people mad.

But, I do think there would be some liability issues to breast feeding in a pool area.

I also don't understand why it's apparantly wrong to ask for a little milk for my coffee.

I mean, if she's RIGHT THERE, what's the harm?!?!?!

It would also depend on how old the kid was, now if he was like 13, yeah that might bother me a little.

Surely you would not want to drink it Riggs!

As a former breast feeder (does that sound ok?) I would never have done it without covering up and I understand the comfort level for men is low, because our society has taken the breast to new heights! I mean it was meant to sustain life for the young, but now it is for perv's to stare at. I bet the people who asked her to leave do not mind looking at Angelina's breast!

In the middle of a mall, OK, in the middle of a restuarant, OK, but there are some places that I think are inappropriate to breast feed because of health and safety issues, and I can see how a pool could be one of them.

Ruby, would you want your kid swallowing chlorine with that milk? Mom wouldn't even have to be in the pool, any pool area reeks of chlorine. If there's an accident and the baby slips in the pool (bare with me here, I think it's possible, little kids are involved), the Y would be liable.

Safety issues?

Ok, I'll just come out and say it.

You have 10 or 11 teenage boys walking around with pocket rockets back and fourth, back and fourth. Someone's bound to lose an eye! Plus if slip in the milk that might hurt too.

Guys, is a breast that's hooked up to a baby's mouth really all that attractive?

I can undertand it is a part of nature and it needs to be done when it needs to be done, but I don't see me sitting anywhere in public doing that. I don't like attention, therefore, I wouldn't want people staring at me. Even if I were covered up, I would not be comfortable with hanging out like that in public.

I'm with fuzzy on this one.

And if I owned that store, that dressing room is for customers to try on clothes. Not for breastfeeding! C'mon!!!

Ok, Molly that makes sens- especially the amoutn of chlorine in the air.

Fuzzy- only on one occasion can I remember being in public. It was the first time we had gone out to eat with Little E. I was so excited to get out of the house. Well of course she started to cry and I knew that was the only thing at that point that would calm her- I had tried a paci and checked her diaper. I told my hubby just ask for the food to go and he insisted that I cover up and feed her- for my sake. It is strange, because he was real uncomfortable with breast feeding, but in hindsight he knew I was right. It was free, convenient and has both of my kids much healthier than most! No one looking at me would have ever known that was what I was doing. I just hoped the waiter would not realize it and drop our food cause he was uncomfortable!

I could go either way on this one.

If she was REALLY that accomodating I suppose I'd let her sit there.

But the bottom line is it's a room intended to be used for a few minutes while you change clothes, not for a sit down meal

Maybe it was a theft issue? That they thought she might try stealing something at the same time? (Hey, some people hide drugs in toddler's jackets, it could happen.)
