Think my computer is fried.....

So last night my laptop screen was kinda fading in and out with its brighness level, and the resolution was kind of fuzzy......and this morning, I still hear freeze frame coming from it, the lights are still on, the wires are connected, but the screen is dead, I rebooted 4 times and no luck. I left it off for today, but I am thinking it is fried.

It was brilliant when Gateway had retail/service outlets. I would have just been able to run the thing up there and have them do what they do. Now I am not even sure where to take the thing, mail it in etc.....and even then with shipping and repairs, it probably makes more sense to just buy a new one.....

But I am not ready for "and then all of a sudden one day JD needed fork over a grand or so for a new laptop".

Soooo I might not be around on the evenings for awhile....please don't think that I am purposely avoiding y'all!

I might have to bite the bullet, breakdown and get a regular computer....this whole thing stinks..

I realize that this is not worthy of the prayer thread, but dang, pray for your buddy JD that his computer comes back up!!

THE IRONY!

Here I am at a computer bemoaning the fate that I won't be hanging out on a computer at night for awhile!

I do think I need to say a prayer for you! Prayers for a grand to come your way!

You don't have any local computer repair places?? Geeks on Call or something?

Yeah, Best Buy has Geek Squad, right?  Maybe they can help you out.  I know what it's like not to be able to use your computer.  It stinks.  I would love to have a laptop and a wireless router, but with the way people are around here, it would not be a good thing.  A lot of people where we live would love to scam some of my internet off of me.  Nosy, nosy people.    I'm hoping you get what you need, JD.  If nothing else, we'll hear from you on Sunday nights when that fabulous program Jazz 101 is on the air from 8 p.m. to midnight CST.

Hey JD, if the computer is still running, but the screen is dead, it may be something as small as the cable to the screen. If the screen itself is bad, that is an expensive repair.

Most laptops have a a VGA port on them. Do you know someone with an extra monitor you could borrow? If it's only the screen, you should be able to plug a monitor into it and use it that way.

With a monitor plugged into it, usually one of the "F" keys will turn on the monitor, I don't remember which one it is . . . I'm thinking maybe "F7". ? . ?

Ruby- thanks for the prayer thought!

Trish!!!!!! :) thanks for the subtle plug!

Web- that thought didn't occur to me! THANK YOU- I will check out if that's an option tonight!

that would be awesome. I have about a years worth of journals and documents saved to the hard drive that I hadn't backed up- nothing overly tragic if I lost, but I sure the heck would like this stuff!!

that's what I mean ruby.....stuff like that....... but I am going to check out web's idea tonight indeed if the monitor is fried. I can run out and grab a monitor, that I can afford, or see if the computer geeks are open tomorrow...

Hey JD,

If you're eventually gonna switch to a standard computer then getting a monitor wouldn't be a bad thing. One less thing you need to buy later.

I forgot all about that, for awhile I used to have an extra flat panel monitor, but I sold it to Dylan. Before I did I would on occassion use it as a monitor to my laptob because I was always concerned about the laptop monitor burning out.

One more for you JD . . . if the display is going out, and you want to replace the laptop, your hard drive is likely still ok.

You can pick up a USB laptop hard drive enclosure for about $15.00. I got one off Ebay for that price. You can take your hard drive out of your laptop (that's shouldnt be hard) and put it in this enclosure and then plug the USB cable into another computer and get your data. When you have what you need off it, you can then reformat it, wipe it clean and use it for extra/backup storage.

I put a bigger drive in my old laptop and got an enclosure for the old drive I replaced. It basically makes it a 40gig thumb drive only it's actually about the size of 6 thumbs. lol

Aslo . . . if you don't have to have a flat panel, and you have to buy a monitor, check the smaller computer stores. Our's here, gets used monitors in now and then from people replacing them with flat panels. I think I paid $50 for the 19" monitor I use here in the office and it works just fine (although big and heavy).

WEB!

YOU ARE MAGNIFICENT!

I was not aware of this! THIS IS GREAT NEWS!

I have a laptop that is duct taped together and recently the hard drive blew out on it. I replaced the hard drive with a new 100gig one VERY HESITANTLY because I thought it would be such a waste if the laptop only lasts a few more months.

Now I know that when it does finally break down I'll be able to save the drive! I'm gonna go buy one of those enclosures NOW!

Thanks man!

Very cool web! Thanks!

Hey JD, Second Take used CD"s & DVD's on 76'th & Layton has a big selection of used monitors.

I bet Record Head on 71'st & Greenfield would too.
