Some People Just Shouldn't Fly

I'm thankful they weren't in the air! Man Jumps From Moving Jetliner Onto Tarmac By Associated Press

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - An airline passenger bit a fellow traveler Monday, then jumped out of a jetliner moving on the tarmac, authorities said. He was later subdued with a stun gun.

The man was taken to a hospital from the Fort Lauderdale airport, the Broward County sheriff's office said. It was unclear whether he was injured. The other passenger suffered minor injuries from the bite.

The Continental Airlines flight had been delayed for about 30 minutes, and as the Boeing 737 began to taxi, the man started yelling to get off, the sheriff's office said.

He ran to the front of the plane and banged on windows and the cockpit door, authorities said. As passengers and crew members tried to restrain him, he bit a passenger.

When the pilot depressurized the cabin, the man opened a door, jumped to the tarmac and ran toward the terminal. Deputies said they zapped him with a stun gun after he resisted arrest.

Troy Rigby, 28, will be charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespass, battery, resisting arrest with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer, in addition to an outstanding warrant for marijuana possession, the sheriff's office said.

The plane, set to fly from Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport to Newark, N.J., was carrying 116 passengers and five crew members. It was rescheduled for later Monday, a Continental spokesman said.

Florida is the vortex of weird behavior.  I think Keith Olberman did a whole Oddball year end retrospective salute to Florida for that very reason.

This story is sad, but amusing all the same.  It makes me wonder if this is a relative of my boss.  This is a guy who once decided to make a dramatic exit from an argument with is wife (now ex-wife).  So, he opened the door and stepped out... alas, it was a car door and they were traveling at about  35 MPH at the time.  He said the first step wasn't so bad, but at the second, he figured this was not the brightest thing he had ever done.  By 2 1/2 steps, it was clearly time to "tuck & roll".  Yep...lots and lots of beer was involved in that decision process.

I'm a little miffed at a couple of the charges , criminal trespass ?  huh ? criminal mischief ? huh? how could he be trespassing  when he bought a ticket ? and there's no law about being in an airport without one or you'd be arresting everyone who came to pick someone up.

mischief ?  hey , the plane was late leaving , and unless I'm wrong , he's not a prisoner just cause he's on board . resisting arrest ? on what charge was he being arrested for ? getting off a plane ? the way I see it that man was within his rights as the plane was still on the ground.

Probably trespassing on the tarmac.  As for criminal mischief, I believe that is what they charge you with when they don't really have anything else to charge you with but the figure you ought to be arrested.
