Sounds odd considering we were going from 80's pop-metal into modern-day country, but the segue from Steelheart to Miranda Lambert sounded really really cool.

You should - seriously, it sounded great. Reminded me of the late great JJ Jackson, who would always talk about the importance of good segues in DJing.

If we ever got to a point where we had the time to REALLY get into running this station, our software allows us to do a LOT with segues.
We can speed up and slow down songs without affecting the voice at all (which still amazes me when I hear it), and as a result we can do beat matching, where the software will slightly alter the start or end of a song to match the one it's blending into, and then return to normal, without ever making it noticable that anything had changed.
I know Mz was playing with some of that stuff the last time she recorded the Weird Newz. She sounds really funny sped up or slowed down! Speaking of, did you add the echo at the beginning, or did she? I know she was playing around with some echoes, but I didn't think she added any.
I know what you mean about speeding up your voice or slowing it down. It's cool to get that chipmonk effect.
That's whats so cool with our broadcast software though. I can turn a 4 minute song into a 3 and a half minute song and you wouldn't notice a difference unless I told you. (I'm sure someone out there would say they could tell, but most people can't).
An example on the station is Wynonna's NO ONE ELSE ON EARTH.
When I heard that on the radio I loved it. When I bought the CD it just seemed boring or sluggish.
I called the station that was playing it and asked if they had a special copy of it, they said no, they just sped it up to make it more upbeat.
This must be the kind of software they had, because we can do the same thing. And that song is sped up when we play it too now.

So is it possible to not generally overlap songs they way they're overlapping now? I don't know if I speak for others, but Marky & I have both discussed how sometimes it's a bummer when dealing with a song that doesn't have a fade-out ending. With certain songs the lovely endings can be lost completely. (For example, something like Styx's "Babe")

If we had the time we can set each song individually to end or pick-up the way we want it to.
The RIAA, when it comes to internet radio, STRONGLY suggests the cross-fade. They haven't made it mandatory yet, but if too many people don't do it they will.
Some songs however, like you pointed out, just don't work with a cross-fade and it can be really ugly if they mix badly.

Interesting... The RIAA sure can come up with some kooky rules, huh?

Well, that one actually makes sense. They're concerned about people ripping the songs. It's very easy to do with a program like cool edit.
Oh, I see. I guess because collecting MP3's instead of CD's is something that wouldn't interest me in the least, I forget that there are people out who would be interested in ripping them. Thanks for the info - that's very interesting.
