Music Topic: Van Halen Reunion?

Ok,

Lady Strange wants a music topic, how abou this?

Do you want these guys to get back together or is it a mistake?

Supposedly they've been offered a million bucks a show! (DLR mentions that in the audio clip I'll play later).

How do you feel about this plan by Eddie to have Van Halen do the next Search For A Rock Star like INXS did?

It worked out ok for INXS in the end, but then their original lead singer was dead, Van Halen just can't get along with their original singer.

Thoughts? Views?

Eddie is certifiably insane. Anyone who has worked with him or come into contact with him in the past few years will tell you that.

It's a horrible idea to get a new singer.  The VH brothers have completely lost touch with reality, and it's so very said, because the fans are the ones who suffer.  They know what we want.  And it isn't a new auditioned singer.

Would it be Sammy Hagar, or David Lee Roth?

If it's David, they better check to make sure he can take a day off from his Burger King job.

Yeah,

For a long time it seemed like it was DLR's ego and antics that was the problem, and I'm sure that WAS a big part of it.

But lately it's become more and more clear that the Van Halens are just not right in the head either.

Are you kidding me Web? Burger King?

He's taken over for Howard Stern! That's where the sound bites are going to come from.

He says he's already cleared the way with CBS Radio to take a leave of absence to record and tour with the group.

Burger King?!  Burger King?!

DLR may be goofy and over-the-top, but that's part of his charm.  He also happens to be one of the greatest frontmen of all time, and one of the most interesting personas rock & roll has had to offer.

Would he be difficult to live with him / be in a band with?  Probably.  But would it be worth it?  Absolutely.

Eddie is a nut, DLR is a nut so why not? They'll get together long enough to get in to the studio then they'll have a knock-down-drag-out fight and that will be it.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah,

Isn't that what classic R&R is all about?

Indeed, I beleive that underlying tension is part of what made the original VH great.

Remember that last reunion? It lasted like a week. They cut two new songs for the greatest hits CD and then at the MTV awards Eddie got ticked at Dave and they split up right there backstage!

As a DIE HARD Van Halen fan, I'm stoked to see them, no matter what the circumstances.  I don't blame them for not wanting DLR.  He's a fruitcake, egomaniac, and looks like the guy from "Tales from the Crypt".  I saw them in concert with the guy from Extreme.  He covered the songs pretty well.  But that's what was bad.  He sounded like a guy covering VH songs.

What's wrong with Sammy Hagar?  I heard he was up for getting back in.  I think VH is having to do it to gain exposure to a new generation.  What they REALLY need is new material though.  Hope they've got it for the new guy instead of just doing another greatest hits album and doing a tour to promote it.

Oh no T-Girl!

You've made me sad

Like LS said, his bizarreness is his greatness! Besides, any group with Eddie in it can't criticize someone else for being odd.

The only thing I will admit is that the schtick DLR does is getting old. It hurts me to see a wrinkling aging DLR trying to act like he's still 20 something. Nothing wrong with aging gracefully.

Don't get me wrong, my favorite CDs are the 1st VH album, Women & Children First, and 1984.

I LOVE to see the old VH videos with Crazy Dave.  His showmanship and singing style were AWESOME! but....

If I were the other three though, I still wouldn't want to tour with him.  He would just drive me nuts.  Maybe that's what's wrong with Eddie.  DLR drove him insane!!

DLR is in better shape than any of you were when you were 20 years old!  And he can still move.  Why is it you're happy when Mick gets up there & shakes it in his typical Mick style, but you don't like to see DLR doing the same thing?  I don't get it.

And TNGirl:  As for Sammy, he is a great performer.  And one of the most powerful vocalists of all time.  Great songwriter, oh yeah - and he's sexy as hell!  You will never hear me criticize his talent.  But Van Halen & Van Hagar were 2 different bands, and we're talking about Van Halen.  And as far as them reuniting with Sammy, he too gets annoyed with Eddie's insanity.  I'm tellin' ya, the boy ain't right!

L.S.  I think you're right about Sammy.  From what I've seen, he's having a blast down in Cabo Wabo, shooting his own tequila and playing when and where he wants.  He can still go out and solo anytime.  I'd go see him!!  I think you've also got something about HIM not being the one to tolerate the insanity (Eddie's that is).

Old VH back in high-school was my all-time favorite band- I had all the albums- even grew to accept the 5150 album after I saw them live with Sammy. A big regret is that I never got to see old VH live......DLR's over-the head flying sky-kicks off the drum-riser to Unchained or Runnin with the devil would have been awesome to see in the day,,,,,

but I have NO desire to see how this would play-out today. 50+ yr old men wanting the glory days of being 22 and willing to act like silly clowns to do it. Reuiniting would be a sell-out.

Conversely, I don't think of the Stones in the same way, because they never stopped creating new music, and I don't think of Richards as an act, where-as DLR is a ham.

They should really just be content with their spot in the rock-n-roll hall of fame, and grow old gracefully.

I used to be a big VH fan, but I really have to agree with everything Lady Strange has said. I've got all of Sammy's recent albums and he still rocks (JR, need copies?). Diamond Dave did a stint (early to mid 90's maybe?) and produced an album and called it the DLR band, and I thought the song they played on the radio for a while was pretty good.

But VH is dead. The songs they did with what-was-his-name from Extreme (Gary?) sucked. (Sorry Ruby.) Sammy and Dave still got it, but man, Eddie is running on fumes. The licks are the same, and he's not young anymore. He even had hip surgery a few years ago.

When I think of Van Halen, I think of David Lee Roth and I always thought Of Sammy Hagar as a seperate artist. Van Halen needed Hagar, Hagar didn't need Van Halen. Eddie is a talented guitar player, but his ego never would admit that although his name was on the band, it was DLR out front and center...clearly not an easy place to be and clearly eddie couldnt do that job, so he should gracefully allow the man who could front the band to do his job.

I think vh did a greatest hits album a few years back where they actually got together with dave to do a song- forget what it was called, but it was the best stuff I had heard them do in years.

The greatest hits album had 3 new songs on it, 1 with Sammy, and 2 with DLR (again JR, let me know if you need any of these). And actually, the greatest hits album was part of the reason Sammy left. He didn't want to do a greatest hits, because he felt they still had years ahead of them and had more greatest hits under their belt. He felt that a greatest hits album pretty much signified that their career had come to an end. For VH, I think Sammy was right.

Are you referring to "Me Wise Magic"?

I beleive the song you liked JD was HUMANS BEING, but that might not be one of the new DLR ones, that might be from Twister.

I just remember you really liked that song back when we worked together

hmmmm....this might be one of them weird cases where I dreamed something like years ago and took it for reality!

like my cousin julie has this one italian recipie she swore she read in a book, even had a name for it (don't ask me the recipie or the name...) but no such word in italian exists and she can't find where she read this recipie, so we all think its something she just dreamed up.

Human's Being is the Sammy VH song from Twister and was also on the Twister soundtrack.

Me Wise Magic is the song you're thinking of JD with DLR.

Can't Get That Stuff No More is the other DLR song on the best of, and was pretty good too.
