Favorite Poem

they only one I have ever memorized-

"No Help For That" - Charles Bukowski

there is a place in the heart that
will never be filled

a space

and even during the
best moments
and
the greatest
times

we will know it

we will know it
more than
ever

there is a place in the heart that
will never be filled

and

we will wait
and
wait

in that
space.

1.

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!
"Charge for the guns!" he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

2.

"Forward, the Light Brigade!"
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Someone had blunder'd:
Their's not to make reply,
Their's not to reason why,
Their's but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

3.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.

4.

Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air,
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reel'd from the sabre stroke
Shatter'd and sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

5.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

6.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honor the charge they made,
Honor the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred.

Mine are First Fig and Second Fig by Elizabeth Barret Browning:

My candle burns at both ends.  It will not last the night. But, ah my friends and oh, my foes, it gives a lovely light!

Safe upon the solid rock ugly houses stand. Come and see my shining palace built upon the sand.

Next would have to be Man In The Glass (can't remember the author)

When you get what you want in your struggle for self and the world makes you king for a day, just go to the mirror and look at yourself and see what that man has to say.  For it isn't your father, or mother, or wife whose judgement on you must pass.  The man who's opinion counts most in your life is the one staring back in the glass.

   In Ken Burn's Cival War movie there is a lady who is about 106 ,she recites a poem about a soldiers death . I  can only remember bits and pieces of it but her voice is clear as day. I'm trying to find it but so far no luck.

yea that bukowski one for me too dave- I had been struggling for about 3 days trying to remember what it was, why I liked it- then just before the flood gate opened and there it was in its entirety.

When I was in High School, I had a friend give me a poem she had written down for me on a piece of tablet paper. I believe it was called "Remember Me" I have been trying to find that piece of paper for years. I know it's in a box somewhere, but where? A year after she gave it to me she was killed in a car accident. There are several poems out there with the same title but I can't find the one I'm looking for.

In so many ways, both figs remind me of me.  Take for instance, I worked all day and here I am back to pull an all nighter.  I love my job!

Résumé
Dorothy Parker

Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren’t lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live.
