LONDON, England (Reuters) -- British singer George Michael was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of possessing drugs after he was found slumped in a car in central London, a police source said.


Michael, 42, who has sold more than 80 million records worldwide during a 25-year career, was arrested in the Hyde Park area of the capital early on Sunday, the source said.


A London police spokesman issued a statement saying a 42-year-old man had been held on suspicion of possessing Class C drugs, a group in British law that includes cannabis, tranquillisers and some painkillers.


"We were called by a member of the public to a man seen slumped over the steering wheel of a car," the statement said. "He was arrested on suspicion of possession of controlled substances."


He was bailed to return to a police station in late March pending a police investigation.


Michael's manager and publicist could not be reached for comment.


Under British law, anyone convicted of having Class C drugs can be jailed for up to two years and face an unlimited fine, according to the Home Office (interior ministry) Web site.


In a front page report, the Sun newspaper said the singer was found in a dark-coloured Range Rover parked on Hyde Park Corner, one of central London's busiest intersections.


The unsourced report said he was taken into police custody and was examined by a doctor. He had his photograph and fingerprints taken and was released after more than seven hours, the report said.


It is not the star's first brush with the law.


Michael was arrested in April, 1998, for engaging in a "lewd act" in a public toilet in Los Angeles, after which he ended years of speculation by announcing that he was gay.


He told Reuters in an interview last year that he was giving up the world of pop, saying he found the media attention and celebrity "unbearable."


The singer had a string of hits in the 1980s with the band Wham! before forging a successful solo career with albums such as "Faith," "Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1" and "Patience."


His Brazilian boyfriend Anselmo Feleppa died of an AIDS-related condition in 1993, and Michael fought a legal battle with his record label Sony in the early 1990s before being bought out in a deal reported to be worth $40 million.

George looks like he spends more time preparing his hair every morning than most women.

Woohoooooo! How did you know I laugh that way? When I laugh and I mean REALLY laugh hard, I sound like Mutley. It is so embarrassing. I think we didn't know because we didn't want it to be true. It's like the lead singer of The All-American Rejects. He is so yummy, but so NOT hetero. Sigh. OH and there's those two things like he's only about 12 years younger than I am and I'm married. Minor things, really. The thing I find more ludicrous is the fact that I was 12 and John Taylor was 25 and I was SURE he was going to marry me. Uh, yeah. They call that being a pedophile in most states.

Us guys can be pretty understanding when you want to share us with your female friends, but a house full of guys and you? Men generally don't like that kind of competition.

No offense, but I could not imagine living in a house with that many men. For one thing, you'd have to put a grate around the toilet. It always amazes me how little control men have over their aim.

I think I must have been the only female in my whole high school who thought George Michael looked a little too "pretty" to be straight. It really did not surprise me when the story broke that he wasn't. It also does not surprise me in the least that he is a stoner who has gone so far down hill that he was found passed out in his vehicle. I guess I'm just the naturally suspicious type.

LONDON, England (AP) -- Pop star George Michael has said his arrest for suspected drug possession was "my own stupid fault, as usual."


Michael, 42, was arrested Saturday after he was found slumped at the wheel of his car at Hyde Park Corner in central London. He was bailed to return to a police station next month.


In a statement, the former Wham! singer acknowledged the offense.


"I was in possession of class C drugs which is an offense and I have no complaints about the police who were professional throughout," Michael said.


Class C drugs, the lowest category of illegal drug, include marijuana, anabolic steroids and some amphetamines.


"I have been through enough in 24 years of dealing with the media to know what I am in for from them this week," Michael's statement said. "Much of it will be inaccurate or simply untrue. I can handle that, it is my own stupid fault, as usual."


This is not Michael's first brush with the law. In 1998, he was arrested for lewd conduct in a public toilet in Los Angeles after being spotted by an undercover police officer. (Watch what Michael said about his previous arrest for lewd conduct -- 1:27)


He later released a single and video "Outside," that poked fun at his arrest.


In his statement, Michael promised "I won't make a record out of this one -- even though it is tempting."
