His son is dieing, he convinced everone that he would donate this kidney and then go to jail and that mornign- he halls butt with his girlfriend. Oh don't you want to be with a man like that? Hall butt and leave his son to die!

Police see man released from jail

By Calen McKinney, Staff Writer

A Campbellsville man released from jail to undergo organ-donor testing has fled. As of Friday, the man has yet to be found.

Officials say the man is facing a life sentence on federal charges and should be considered armed and dangerous.

According to U.S. Deputy Marshal Chuck Gilbert, Byron Keith Perkins, 37, of 124 Dowell St. was scheduled to undergo medical testing Tuesday in Louisville to see if he would be able to donate a kidney to his son.

Gilbert says Perkins was released last Monday from the Oldham County Jail in LaGrange, Ky. at 8:30 a.m. but never showed up for the testing and hasn't been seen since.

According to a November press release from U.S. Attorney David L. Huber's office, Perkins faces life in prison without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty Nov. 18 in Bowling Green to federal charges of robbery, use of a firearm during the robbery and selling marijuana.

According to federal court records, Perkins was being housed in the Oldham County Jail awaiting a Feb. 23 sentencing on those charges.

However, according to a temporary release order signed Jan. 13 by U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge James D. Moyer, Perkins was temporarily released from jail and placed on a $10,000 unsecured bond.

As terms of Perkins' release, the order states, he was not to possess any firearms, destructive devices or dangerous weapons. He was also ordered not to drink alcohol or use any narcotic drugs or other controlled substances, unless prescribed by a licensed medical practitioner.

He was restricted to traveling between Campbellsville and Louisville for the sole purpose of medical testing. Perkins was supposed to live with his mother in Campbellsville at all times during his release and be confined to her home, except while being tested.

Any violations of these orders, court records state, would result in immediate arrest by a United States Marshal.

Perkins was first released Sunday, Jan. 15 to travel to Campbellsville to stay with his mother until he was to be tested the following day. After the first round of tests, he returned to the Oldham County Jail.

Perkins was again scheduled to be released from Oldham County Jail in LaGrange, Ky. on Monday, Jan. 23, a court order states, to begin the second phase of medical testing. After those tests were complete, Perkins was to surrender himself to a U.S. Marshal no later than 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24.

He did not show up for the tests nor did he return to jail as ordered.

Gilbert said the U.S. Marshal's office believes Perkins is traveling with a woman, Lee Ann Howard, also of Campbellsville. Gilbert says Howard also spells her name Leighann and has gone by the last name Spradlin.

Howard, Gilbert said, is wanted on first-degree robbery and persistent felony offender charges in Green County.

Gilbert said Perkins and Howard may be traveling in a 1994 bluish-green Crown Victoria, which belongs to Howard's mother. The car's license plate number is 784 BHS.

Perkins has family in the Campbellsville, Russell Springs and Columbia area, Gilbert said.

"We're looking for him," he said. "Any help would be greatly appreciated."

Gilbert said Perkins and Howard should both be considered armed and dangerous.

Howard, Gilbert said, is a 35-year-old white female. She is 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs 120 pounds.

Perkins, he said, has brown hair and brown eyes. He is 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs 220 pounds. Taylor Circuit Court records state Perkins has a tattoo on his left arm and also lists his address as 705 S. Jackson St. in Campbellsville.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Campbellsville Police Department at 465-4122, the Kentucky State Police at (800) 222-5555 or the U.S. Marshal's Louisville office at (502) 588-8000.

Any information given can remain anonymous, Gilbert said.

Taylor County Sheriff John Shipp said Perkins was arrested and charged with several home invasions in 2004. Those charges, Shipp said, are still pending in Taylor Circuit Court.

Gilbert said Perkins could face additional charges for his failure to appear after he is found.

In May, Perkins, along with Michael D. Tucker, was indicted by a Taylor County grand jury on charges of first-degree assault and first-degree burglary. Perkins was also charged with being a first-degree persistent felony offender.

On March 16, according to court records, Perkins and Tucker entered the home of Wes Mann in Campbellsville. Armed with a .22 caliber rifle, Perkins chased Mann's juvenile daughter into a back room and ordered her to get on the ground. Perkins also struck Mann in the face, breaking his nose with the butt of a rifle, before fleeing from the residence.

If convicted, both men could have been sentenced to as much as 40 years in prison. In December, Tucker was sentenced to five years' probation on these and other charges.

With regard to the federal charges, Perkins was a passenger in a vehicle stopped March 12 by the Lebanon Police Department.

In the trunk of the vehicle, records state, Perkins had 9 ounces of marijuana that he intended to sell.

When pleading guilty last November, Perkins already had convictions for several felony offenses, including third-degree burglary, obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, first-degree burglary, bank robbery and using a firearm during a robbery.

The federal case against Perkins is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Butler and was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Lebanon Police Department, the Campbellsville Police Department and the Kentucky State Police.

The prosecution is a part of Project Backfire, a partnership of state and federal law enforcement, which targets violent offenders.

Perkins faces maximum penalties of life imprisonment, a $1 million fine and a period of supervised release of not less than two years.

The federal mandatory minimum sentence is 25 years. There is no parole in the federal judicial system.

Perkins' sentencing has been rescheduled for April 17 at 1:30 p.m. in Louisville.

Seriously, if he poses such a danger, why was he not escorted during this whole process? I can't believe they actually let him walk out. What did they think was going to happen?

They showed his mom, ex wife, son and several of the marshalls involved in the whole process. He was very convincing to them all.

But then they said they obtained taped transcripts of his calls to his girlfriend- they had been planning all along. Why do they not listen to those tapes???

F***ing scum of the earth. What about his son?

Yeah, I don't understand why he didn't have an escort. I'm guessing due to some red tape or something since he had not been sentenced yet.

He even left his mom a note not to worry that his son would be taken care of? They say it was cryptic. I am thinking- the man knows he will get caught soon or maybe he is just an idiot and thinks that kidneys grow on trees! Yes this story was very upseting!

Fugitive's son gets kidney transplant
POSTED: 11:55 a.m. EDT, September 6, 2006

(CNN) -- A Kentucky teenager whose dad went on the lam after being let out of jail to donate a kidney to his ailing son has successfully undergone a kidney transplant.

Destin Perkins received a kidney from an anonymous cadaver donor in California in surgery about three weeks ago, his mother, Angela Hammond, told CNN on Wednesday.

"Destin's feeling good," Hammond said.

The teen's predicament received national attention after a federal judge released his father, Byron Perkins, from jail in January on a $10,000 unsecured bond so he could complete medical tests before his son's surgery.

At the time, Perkins was awaiting a possible life sentence following a conviction on drug, weapons and other charges.

Doctors said Perkins appeared to be a perfect match for his son.

On the final day of hospital tests, Perkins failed to show up. He was not wearing a tracking ankle bracelet because doctors told the court it would interfere with the medical tests.

Byron Perkins has been on the run ever since, and the U.S. Marshals Service put him on their "most wanted" list.

At one point, federal agents said they had a confirmed sighting of Perkins and his girlfriend, Lee Ann Howard, who also is a fugitive, in Mexico. (Full story)

Despite several alleged sightings, Perkins and Howard remain at large.

WOO HOO!

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A federal prisoner who fled after being released from custody to determine whether he could donate a kidney to his ailing son was located with his girlfriend Wednesday in Mexico.

Byron Keith Perkins and Lea Ann Howard were arrested in Puerto Vallarta and were being flown to Los Angeles for a court hearing Thursday. The appearance will be to arrange for their return to Louisville, where they will face federal charges, the U.S. Marshals Service in Louisville said in a statement.

Perkins failed to return to custody in January 2006 after undergoing compatibility tests to see whether he could donate a kidney to his son.

Perkins had been in jail awaiting sentencing for marijuana distribution and unlawful transport of firearms. He faced at least 25 years for those charges, which were filed while he was serving a supervised release from a North Carolina sentence for bank robbery.

He was temporarily released from custody when it was determined his teenage son, Destin, needed a kidney transplant.
