Maybe I DO beleive in the death penalty

As a Catholic I am against the death penalty. I don't beleive anyone ever has the right to take another persons life unless it is immediate self-defense of ones self.

HOWEVER,

The case of Stephen Avery is making it VERY HARD to be a good Catholic.

This man is pure evil. I have not heard a story this gruesome in this area since Dahmer.

Avery is the man that was freed from prison many years ago when DNA evidence supposedly cleared him of his violent crimes. If he WAS indeed innocent, maybe this is what they talk about when they say "God works in mysterious ways" because CLEARLY he should have stayed locked up.

Here is todays news on this disgusting peice of sh*t...

STEPHEN AVERY IN COURT

Darn curiousity. I wish I hadn't read that. Especially after writing two obituaries. I don't say this word much, but today it seems so appropriate: F***ing scum.

Jeremy,

I'm just curious, why do you not believe in capital punishment when God approved it for the Israelites in the Old Testament?

I do agree that you don't find Jesus authorizing it, but He was more about giving the message of eternal life, salvation and how to get to the heavenly kingdom.

The Old Testament is more about the Israelites and the instruction God was giving them on how to have an earthly government and kingdom.

If God is the same today, tomorrow, and forever, wouldn't that mean that He still doesn't condone the evil to live amongst us?

Why not? She makes a great point. I am waiting for his response. He will be tactful. He always is.

This can be a sticky area, and I understand why Mz suggested we don't go there.

But I must say, as more and more issues, be they religious or political arise that tend to make forum members uncomfortable, I am leaning toward returning to the style of forum we had about a year ago where we had several different areas which people could visit.

I love talking religion and politics, but you've got to do it with people who want to discuss that type of thing. And while my attitude would normally be "just don't read it" if it isn't something you want to get into, the reality of it is our threads very rarely stay on course so that can be more difficult than it sounds.

UNTIL I arrange the forum that way I'll just say this T-Girl. I have not studied the bible as much as I should, although I am trying to do so in bits and peices now.

If indeed God did not have an issue with capital punishment, I still would, because I don't feel I could be the one to inject the poison. If I can't do it, I can't ask that someone else do it.

Ultimately if I can lock a criminal up and be safe from him, capital punishment is not an option.

I used to be 100% for capital punishment, but over the past two years as my faith has grown (ironically during the time I was losing my father instead of my faith being tested it seemed to get stronger) and I have tried to open my heart to compassion for all living things, even a sicko like Avery.

I've struggled with it mightily today, because my gut says he should fry. But I've come to beleive I have no right to take away his opportunity for repentance (sic?). Maybe, one day during his 30 years in prison he'll truly find God and have to opportunity to be saved. I can't take that away from someone, not even him.

That's just my view. It might be right, it might be wrong. But I can sleep at night, so I'm alright with it

JR I think it would be great to have seperate areas for discussing topics like politics, relgion, and other things, I know we have always shyed away from getting into debates about certain topics but for me if we are truly wanting to interact with each other then we should discuss things that we would discuss with our friends in the so called normal world, but thats just my opinion.

Perfectly said Ultimo and MZ I hope I did not offend you, I would never want to do that. I know what you meant, but I knew JR would be nice to TG.

Good morning guys.  I didn't want to get anything uncomfortable started.  Jeremy and I seem to agree on a majority of issues so I was wanting to see where he was coming from on one we disagree.  Rather than keeping this thread up, I think I'll just send him an e-mail this morning.

Let's jump to more pleasant topics.  I'm wanting to do requests of favorite soundtrack songs this morning.  Anybody with me?

Please do T-Girl! I'm certainly interested in hearing your thoughts on this.

I have to say, every few years a murder in this town just gets to me.

15 years ago it was Dahmer, 10 or so years ago it was Christine Schweiger, a woman who was shot in the head outside of a Popeyes Chicken in front of her young daughter. About 3 years ago was the shooting of a couple of Arby's employees, and now this.

I really had trouble getting to sleep last night, I just couldn't help but keep thinking of that poor woman and what she went through. I can't help but wonder how her parents and other loved ones can find the strength to go on. I was even imaging how this Avery character was asleep in a jail cell somewhere as I was trying to go to sleep.

Like I said, some of these just hit me extremely deeply for some reason. I always find myself wishing I'd gone into the violent crimes division of a law enforcement arm so I could be part of the solution to this.

ANYWAY, I digress.
