Gas prices

We never have gotten below $2.00.

Prices jumped nearly 11 cents over the past two weeks to $2.35

for a gallon of regular-grade gasoline, even though the price of crude oil dropped, a national survey said Sunday.

The hike obliterates the 9-cent drop that had begun January 20, said Trilby Lundberg, publisher of the Lundberg Survey.

"Those five weeks of declines were due largely to our being at the bottom of our gasoline-demand curve," she said.

The price rise came even as the cost of a barrel of crude fell from $62.91 on February 24 to $59.96 last Friday -- a 7-cent-per-gallon drop.

Lundberg said an expected increased demand for gasoline in the spring and new government gasoline formulation requirements conspired to drive up prices at the pump.

Prices are not likely to fall any time soon, she said.

"With our demand building and those new recipe requirements coming into effect, gas prices will most likely surge much higher," she predicted.

"Some of those regulations are seasonal in nature; they become more severe and more expensive as the weather gets warmer."

Prices in Newark, New Jersey, were the lowest, at $2.15 for a gallon of regular; they were highest in Honolulu, Hawaii, at $2.63 per gallon, she said.

The survey was carried out March 10. The previous survey was carried out February 24.

The following are some other cities' prices for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline:

• Charleston, South Carolina: $2.19

• Salt Lake City, Utah: $2.25

• Dallas, Texas: $2.28

• Atlanta, Georgia: $2.29

• Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: $2.32

• Las Vegas, Nevada: $2.38

• Cleveland, Ohio: $2.39

• Los Angeles, California: $2.55

$2.46 for 89 octane up here last I saw because we have that "special" gas.

Around KC it did for a brief, shining moment get down to $1.99, but that was weeks ago. Last night, I screwed up all of the fortitude I could muster and took the Excursion to the gas station because I had been driving it all day and was down to half a tank.  I don't mind admitting that I wept as I pumped the $2.35 "cheap stuff" into the tank.

We are finally back at 3.00furious

ways not to save gas:
  1. Driving across town to save a nickel on a gallon of gas. With gas prices at record highs, many people are doing everything they can to reduce the amount of money they spend at the pump. One of the more popular ways people are doing this is by using sites like Gasbuddy.com to find the cheapest gas stations in their zip code. Unfortunately, many of these same people are driving long distances to save a couple of pennies on a gallon of gas - meaning theyre probably burning up the amount of money they save by using extra gas to go to an out of the way station.
  2. Driving on the highway with their windows down to avoid using the air conditioner. Weve become accustomed to thinking that our cars AC is the biggest drain on our cars gas mileage. While using it will reduce your gas mileage, there are many instances where using your AC instead of rolling down the windows will actually be better for your cars gas mileage. One of the biggest drains on your cars gas mileage is aerodynamic drag - something that is exacerbated by rolling down the windows. If youre going to drive on the highway, go ahead and turn on your AC and keep the windows up!
  3. Driving with their trucks tailgate down. Many people believe that driving with their trucks tailgate down will improve gas mileage. Unfortunately, the opposite is actually true. When a trucks tailgate is up, a protective air bubble will form in the bed area which actually makes the truck a little more aerodynamic; when the tailgate is down, this bubble disappears and gas mileage gets worse.
  4. Accelerating extremely slowly. Many people think that the slower they accelerate, the better gas mileage theyre going to get. Unfortunately, extremely slow acceleration can bog down your engine and make it run less efficiently - thus wasting fuel. So, instead of slamming the accelerator to the floor or barely even touching it, try and find a nice happy medium so you can achieve a moderate acceleration.

So, if youve been doing the aforementioned items, I certainly cant fault you for trying to save gas and money, however, theres a reason why you havent seen much of a savings - these ideas just dont work.

Nothing under $3.00 here, I hate that bout New England, it's so expensive.
GAS is about $3.05 a gallon.

Yesterday I got $20 worth of gas, I stood there at the pumps about 45 seconds for it to reach $20 worth.... it really is horrible.

oklahoma is an "oil state" and should be below the national average, but we are sitting at $3.29 (and don't forget that other 9/10 -- really making it $3.30)!

From a WISN article:

Nationwide, the lowest average price for regular fuel is $2.87 in Charleston, S.C., and the highest was in Chicago at $3.59.
Many drivers said they are worried this price hike will never stop.
"It's pretty ridiculous. It hurts the pocket book," said Richard Scisido, of East El Paso, Texas. "It's like 10 bucks more every week than what you are used to paying."

Milwaukee gas prices range from $3.45 to $3.59 today! Argh! furiousfuriousfurious

They've been saying on FOX & MSNBC that parts of California are over $4.00 a gallon.

We went up to $3.49 a few days ago, and I heard one station is at $3.65

We all just keep driving though. This holiday weekend no one's gonna cancel their trips and stay home.

In a free market society this is the way it goes. Prices will go as high as they can until the market starts to go soft.

We love our cars. They represent our freedom. I think some people would fuel their monster SUV before they'd feed their kids if it came down to it. no.gif
