My son is NOT the worst kid in the world

It can always be worse!

MODESTO, California (AP) -- An 8-year-old boy swiped his teacher's car keys and took her minivan for a joyride, cruising safely home and into the record books as the city's youngest auto thief, police said.

The third-grader told officers he "just wanted to drive around for a while" when he left the James Marshall School on Monday, officer Michael Amarillas told The Modesto Bee newspaper.

The diminutive driver snatched the keys from teacher Caren Brady's purse when she turned her back to the class.

In order to operate the Dodge Caravan, he raised the driver's seat, lowered the steering wheel, adjusted the rearview mirror and turned off the radio.

"This is the smallest child you can ever imagine," said Brady, who noticed her vehicle missing a couple hours after school, according to the paper.

"I don't think this kid is 4 feet (1.22 meters) tall. He's tiny; he's the tiniest kid in the class."

The boy, whose identity was not released, was suspended from school, Brady said. Nothing was damaged and no one was hurt. Police said they would not charge him with a crime.

A neighbor saw the boy driving and called police. Officers found the van parked in front of the house, which is less than a mile from the school. They lectured the boy after interviewing him.

"You can't do anything but laugh," said Brady, who spent 90 minutes Tuesday teaching other pupils about the consequences of choices they make. She said she would not let the boy return to her class, according to the Bee.

That's scary. It appears that he knew what he was doing, he even adjusted the rearview mirror!

i wonder if she will be laughing a few years from now when he's in juvie...  that's where the problem starts,  everyone just laughs.  i say beat his @ss!  suspension from school is not the answer.  it just fuels the fire within.  suspension in most cases is an easy out, as is labeling kids with adhd, but of course these days, it's easier to have kids on ridlin so they will be "easier to handle", rather than teach them real values...

No I would so not be laughing!

Yeah I never understood why they suspended me for skipping school.

Hello I didn't want to be here anyway!

DS the adhd people they just have to be careful about. My step-daughter has it and meds helped. She would ask for it. She didn't stay on it long and she didn't use it in the summer once out of school. She just had a hard time concentrating.

i understand that some people genuinely need the meds for adhd, but i think that we have teachers crying adhd every time a 13 year old boy acts like a 13 year old boy...   i'm glad that i'm not in jr high / middle school today -- i could never keep my mouth shut in class, and i was always clowning around.  and on the flip side, i wouldn't want to be a teacher either because you can't do anything to punish the kids for acting naughty.

you know, you got me started...   for instance, my son decides that he want's to be in band.  okay, no problem BUT, the deal was that he was going to be in band until the instrument was paid for.  first year was great.  this year, different band instructor.  i know that my kid can be a real pain in the butt and somewhat annoying.  but talking with several of the other parents, from what their kids tell them, this instructor is just a real jerk to almost all the kids.  my kid was getting detention for stuff like turning around, smiling, dropping his paper -- in other words bull crap.  i'm sure he asked for some of the detentions.  anyhow, last week the kids were being tested on their music, but when it came to my son, he didn't know the music very well, because although my son kept asking for the sheet music, the instructor kept blowing him off.  the instructor told him "just forget it!"  well, i had enough.  when i cornered him (the instructor) i basically asked him where and when he would like to serve his detention, and that his job was to educate the kids; deliberately keeping educational materials from the kids was not teaching, and that if he didn't like kids, perhaps he needs to teach adults.

I remember having an economics teacher in high school like that. For example, I had a field trip one day that kept me from his class, so I turned in my homework the next day, and he wouldn't accept it! And I was an A student, I did my work and turned it in on time, I wasn't just looking for an extension. I remember that 0 turned my homework grade into a D at a time when grades were reported to parents. My parents questionned it and gave me a little bit of a hard time about it (not much, because it was rare for me to get anything less than a B). I told them why, and they basically gave me a "yeah, right" but let it go. Later, I mentioned who the teacher was, and my stepfather had him in school to. He said, "I wish I knew that when you got that D, I would've gone in and given him a once over!"

It does seem that the young man needs a lesson in impulse control.  Hopefully this is not a sign of things to come from him.  I hope the parents involved are taking this situation seriously and dealing with it now before it does get out of hand.

I agree with you Woo about suspending someone for a punishment. It punishes the parent- which must be what they are going for! It also burdens the teachers because the kid has to be able to make up all the work!

The boy has ADHD too and takes meds, but he could not sit in a chair for his life! He would get up and not even realize and just wander! He tapped his foot incessantly and would lose or forgot everything! But there are times and I know the difference, when he does thing I cahlk up to being a teen or being a boy or both!
