Songs that bring back memories

I just requested "Keep it Coming Love" by K.C. and the Sunshine Band.  This song brings me some great memories from a cruise I took to the Bahamas in 2003.  Oh what fun, and what a "drunkfest".  Went w/ my best girl friend in the whole world.  Just us girls, and lots of partying.

What song brings back memories for you?  Good or Bad.

Fields of Gold by Sting. My ex boyfriend gave me Ten Summoners Tales as a gift, and those songs always make me think of our relationship. We parted on very good terms, but soon after we broke up, Fields of Gold was playing in the grocery store, and I almost cried.

I can't even begin to answer this one. I swear I think almost every song I ever heard has a memory attached, and even though most of them are insignificant moments they are still warm memories none-the-less. Which is why I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE music.

Just for an example of how insignificant most of the memories are. Huey Lewis & the News THE POWER OF LOVE.

I was a Huey FANatic when I was a teenager, so was my cousin, who was more like my brother because we hung out with each other ALL the time.

In the summer of 1985 we were both dying to hear something new from Huey and had heard he was going to have a song on the soundtrack to the new Michael J. Fox movie BACK TO THE FUTURE.

So, I remember in vivid detail that on that day my Dad took us both to McDonalds to pick up lunch (which was actually a treat for me in 1985) and when we got back in the car the radio came on and it was maybe 30 seconds into a song by Huey we had never heard. Even without hearing the first 30 seconds it instantly became my favorite Huey song!

It's so wierd though, because that one moment is a snapshot in my head. I can still see the interior of the car and remember what a nice day it was.

I bet you could pick 100 songs from the 80's and I'd have an insignificant memory to go with 99 of them

Of course, there's also BAD memory songs.

FIRST CAR ACCIDENT: John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band - TENDER YEARS

SECOND CAR ACCIDENT: Asia - GO

And so on and so on.

I remember when I was 17 and I had just gotten my own truck and put a new under-dash cassette player in it. I had a cassette that I had taped off the radio and I put that in and the first song that played on my new truck stereo was Re-Flex - The Politics of Dancing.

It sounded so much better than anything else I had up to that point. Now when I hear that song, it reminds me of that time . . . being 17 . . . starting to make my own decisions . . . my whole life ahead of me, etc.

The song itself has no meaning to me, but it reminds me of that time in my life.

Where The Streets Have No Name reminds me of waterskiing up north in July. Having them small 4 oz bottles of beer so the beer never got warm in the sun!

I remember heading to a New Kids On The Block concert and the radio playing Def Leppard "Pour Some Sugar On Me". Everyone in the car started going crazy! We were just getting so pumped up!

cd- WaterBoys- Fisherman's BLues reminds me of hangin out with my high-school buddies, partying our butts of and trying to form a band. THey did, what I felt at the time was an awesome version of Van Mossison's "Sweet Thing". This must have been about 1987-8. I found the cd at a used store maybe 3 yrs ago, bought it and hit play. Bad. Really really bad. Couldn't believe that I once loved that cd!

Crazy Train by Ozzy. Reminds me of road trips, loud music, fast cars.

Same here JR. For example, a friend just bought the Van Halen - Balance CD before we went on a field trip to Fort Wayne. He normally didn't listen to rock, and Van Halen was my favorite band at the time, and I suspected he had a crush on me anyway. So, he hadn't even had the CD for a week and he let me borrow it for the trip. We actually got a Greyhound bus instead of a school bus for this trip (we had to pay for it though). I remember sitting behind the friend who gave it to me on the bus, listening to the CD, and looking out the window and passing a quarry. Most of the songs from that CD remind me of that trip and the awesome group of friends I had at the time.

Patty Loveless "I Try To Think About Elvis" I used to go to this youth group and there was a guy named Tony I liked there. I went to Florida during this time and I heard this song during a time I was trying not to think about him & started laughing! I ended up buying a keychain with his name on it.

David Byrne in that big suit used to freak me out.

I took me awhile to be able to listen to these again. But anything by the group No Mercy, 2 Unlimited, Jack Wagner & Kylie Minogue all remind me of my stalker ex-boyfriend! I was almost afraid to post this, but I know y'all got my back!

I'm sure there are a few more but those are the primary ones. No Mercy was the worst because he practically kidnapped me and played that CD trying to convince me to stay with him. Oh well I can listen to this stuff again. I ticked me off at first because there were songs I really liked that I just couldn't stand to hear.

Too many to possibly list in the Forum.  I say we include memories in our Request dedications.  That would be fun.

I agree, it seems like I have a song attached to almost every memory. Like when we were flying over a cliff in a ford escort and the song that was playing before we hit the drainage pipe was "should have been a cowboy" Toby Keith.

For me:

FIRST CAR ACCIDENT:  Jim Steinman - ROCK & ROLL DREAMS COME THROUGH.  That accident was in the first car I ever owned.  Luckily, there has not been a 2nd accident!

But I can tell you I also remember my best friend getting her brand new car in the late 80's, and not long after, she had an accident.  The song playing at that time was Great White's cover of "Once Bitten, Twice Shy."

"Shoulda been a pilot" would've been more appropriate!

The Doors - Whiskey Bar, 20th Century Fox, etc.

When my hubby and I's relationship started to get serious, I had my '73 Nova with no tape deck. He lent me a recorder for college, and I also used it in my car to play music. At the same time, he lent me his The Doors tape. The album makes me remember wearing little dresses, driving around in my sexy (if sh*tty) car, balancing work, school, and a boyfriend, and all the plenty of other things that happened that year.

Sticky Fingers by the Stones- so many memories attached to this album! I think primarily it reminds me of being a teenager in the house when the folks and brother were gone somewhere for a whole afternoon- being able to just crank this while chilling....

No kidding! It was that whole slow motion flying thru the air thing going on too! The song just seemed to go really slow until we hit.

Oh, wait - But if you do, maybe copy it into the Forum as well, so I don't have to worry about missing something, and can get some work done!

anything by bauhaus and joy division-

my buddies greg and tony went to a different high-school- I guess you could say my school was more jock and preppy and their high-school was all music and punk.

So Greg and Tony really turned me on to some great music that I wouldn't have been exposed to otherwise. Plus we'd go hang on the hip "East Side" of Milwaukee, which wasn't a side of town I was familiar with when I was 15-16. It was cool. A couple of their friends transfered to my high-school, so I was their "in"- and we created a pretty neat group of friends. These guys were from the east side, so knew where all the cool house parties and illegal bars were who would serve anyone. fun fun times- friends gathered by the love of music.

Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers "Moanin"....must have been about 1991- that weird gap between the dying of hair-band metal and the beginnings of grundge- I was just soooo bored of music.

I was flippin around the dial one day, probably just sooo tired of voices trying to sell me something- and I heard this song-I was sitting there reading. And it just "struck" me. I got jazz, I saw the appeal, the way it can really color the world and your surrondings in a new and unique way. Haven't been the same since!

BON JOVI – BAD MEDICINE:

I remember seeing Bon Jovi do a surprise unannounced warmu-up show in a small club, and during this song, Jon handed his mic to my best friend & let her sing some of it!  One of the greatest nights of my life...  Sigh....

DOBIE GRAY- DRIFT AWAY:     I remember seeing Bon Jovi doing this live for the first time.  I had good seats on the floor, & was crying like a baby!  I remember Jon saying, “Sing like the angels, boys,” at one point.  It was awesome!

Also, my manager & I used to practice harmonies on this song.  After the record store closed, we’d put on this 45 & sing it while we shut down the place.

I remember I loved this song when it first came out, and I memorized every last word of it. One day on the playground, some other girls were singing it wrong, and I corrected them. (I know, I'm a youngin'.)

That reminds me of another song: Signs I had a "boyfriend" at the time (which basically meant we played together on the playground and he walked me home after school). I remember arguing with him about whether or not they said "f-ing up the scenery." Darn MTV and their censors!

I still correct people who do lyrics wrong (I'm so bad!)  Yes, these lyrics were really fun to memorize.  And one of the beauty parts about that night was that on the way to the place, I'd taught my best friend all of those lyrics.  (We used to do that - I'd teach her songs on long car rides.) Of course, we had no idea whatsoever that BJ was gonna show up, but lo & behold, there they were, and that's the song he gave her the mic during, and boy-howdy, was she PREPARED!!

ZEBRA – HE’S MAKING YOU THE FOOL:  I remember being backstage talking to lead singer / guitarist, Randy Jackson, who I've been in love with since the age of 15 or something.  He told us about an upcoming show they were gonna be playing, and I said "Hey - Wink & I'll be there," which was really corny, because it's a line from this song (Goes “No matter when you call / No matter what you say / Wink & I’ll be there”) and he smiled, totally “getting” the reference, and I remember thinking “What a dork I am – how embarrassing!!”  But it just fell out of my mouth, ya know?
