What exactly is the point of the Senate?

I'm not looking to open up a debate on gay marriage here. Whether you agree or disagree doesn't matter to me.

But I was watching C-Span this morning and couldn't help but be struck by how worthless the Senate in action can be.

This thing needed 60 votes to move forward. It was beleived that only about 50 would vote in favor so it wasn't EXPECTED to advance.

But what irritates me is that there's guys like Bill Frist, who clearly put a great deal of thought and time into his side of the debate and there was NO FREAKING ONE THERE TO HEAR IT!

If there were 15 Senators there to debate and vote that would surprise me.

When the women read the voting roll call she would go seven to ten names between every yea or nay.

What is the point of this BS if everyone's mind is made up before they even hear out each sides arguments?

Apparantly the only way to influence a politician is by joining a lobby group and buying them a trip to Cancun complete with spending money and hookers.

I'm really starting to think we need to rethink our favorite little slogan of GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. Being the strongest doesn't mean being the best, it just means you're the strongest.

Gridlock in Washington and the immediate run to your bases corner of the boxing ring on every issue leaves me wondering if countries like Canada may not have a little more on the ball than we do.

I think the point of the senate is to give the illusion of order & control over things which are not orderly and certainly aren't controlled.

What time was this vote 10 am Washington DC time? No wonder why very few folks were there. Its coctail hour.

I totally agree. It's their job to be there. If I missed a meeting like that at work, I may even be fired! I wonder if there's a way to see the roll call for who shows up to those sessions.

Exactly!

I realize there's a LOT of voting, and it can take place at all different hours, but what exactly is their job if not listening to the arguments and being there to vote?

They all assumed it wouldn't pass so both sides felt they didn't need to be there. But that's ridiculous.

How dare they preach about how every American needs to vote when it comes to electing THEM?

I mean, the government has actually pleaded with the networks to NOT PROJECT A WINNER because they're afraid it keeps people from voting in the Western states.

Is that not EXACTLY what is happening here?!?!?!?!?!

the reason for Frist's ( or any senators )speech is to get their views on the record.

what bothers me is - I don't give a rats azz how you ( senator )  feel about anything . How do the people you represent feel ?

It's suppose to be "my (public )views " , not ( senators )yours.

Yeah, that's a good point Dave.

They rarely seem to care what their constituants think except for the four months leading up to their election.

Any other time they just think they know what's best for the people they "represent"

Well Said Dave!

Although I am neither for it or against it. I dont agree that The president should be trying to force the fact that Marriage is between a man and a women alone  down our throats because I dont think it is.

1) Texas( his own state) has the largest number of homosexuals than any other state.  ( over 4 million I believe)

1) Does this mean that those of us who arent married for various reasons are social outcasts?

I just dont get it.

I am voting  for Mickey Mouse next election.  gotta be better than Chimp

Thump,

I'm sure you feel strongly about both of your points, but are they really both #1's?
