The Rules and Traditions to Good Living

Hey!

I am sure that I have mentioned this somewhere on the forum, but if life has taught me anything, its don't go cheap on

1. Steaks

2. Beer

3. Toilet Paper

In these cases, pay a bit more to go with quality. Its worth it.

Are there any other "rules to live by" or "family traditions" (to expand the topic a bit) that make for a good life that you know of/ abide by? Any wisdoms to share with the rest of the forum?

What is good? What makes you happy? What is the right way to do/ go about...(x) something?

My mom always told me never to buy the first thing you look at. I follow that advice, but I find I often return to buy the first thing I looked at, even after I've shopped around. I guess I've got good intuition or something.

I guess one of my "rules to live by" that sort of crosses over into "what makes me happy" is when I'm feeling down, I try to do something nice for someone else. That almost always makes me feel better to make someone else smile.

No matter how bad your situation may seem at any given time, the thing to remember is that it could always somehow be worse.  As I frequently remind myself, I could be in this exact situation but also have a jellyfish up my backside.  If that wouldn't make it worse, I don't know what would!!

always say "i love you" to your loved ones when you hang up the phone, or when they walk out the door...

Ditto what DS said- even the boy says it back, the hubby never does, but it does not stop me from saying it everytime we part.

Also I try to always put something back where I found it or where it belongs so that cleaning only means cleaning not picking up clutter. (My family however does not follow my lead)

I try to look at the bright side, but that has come with age. I try to not let people get the best of me- especially road rage- that too has come with age.

This is the one I live by: Everyone says the best days of their life were when XXX. Everyone always wants to go back to the past. I say the best day of my entire life is today, and can only be trumped by tomorrow. Even when I'm having a really bad day, there is some reason that today is better than yesterday, and tomorrow will always be better than today.

Sunday brunch/breakfast out is a good tradition.

I've always been partial to the idea of Sunday dinner as a family event.  It doesn't get to happen very often because my older son lives about 2 hours away and it is not so easy to get him and his wife coordinated with the rest of us.  It's nice when it does work out though.

What a good way to look at everything!  I admire that.

Thanks! I've recently discovered that I'm Taoist, and I think this has something to do with that.
