Bummer for Ben Roethlisberger

Apparently someone in a Chrysler New Yorker turned in front of him while he was out motorcycle riding.  He has a broken jaw and a broken nose.  Possibly injured his knees, might have broken some teeth and could have a 9 inch cut on the back of his head.  They say he was coherent and knew where he was and what happened.  MSNBC has a picture of what is left of his bike... YOWZA!

It sounds for the most part like he probably will be.  I guess the big question is did he really hurt his knees?

What I think is sad in all of this is that the thing people are going to focus on is the fact that he was not wearing a helmet. As if that is a complete guarantee that you will walk away unscathed from any and every wreck.  I will grant you that a full face style helmet might have abated some of these injuries, but it is by no means assured.

In the worst accident I ever personally saw the aftermath of (Thank GOD I didn't see the actual event), the driver of the bike was wearing a helmet and he still died.  He wrecked into an unburied sewer pipe and was beheaded. The second worst accident I witnessed the aftermath of was my brother's... again, wearing a helmet but his nose was smashed and he had a concussion. His left arm was broken in a few places and required surgery.
