Bugs

This is what I said a thread about the beloved bug.  I remember in the past we chatted about earwigs. Something that for the first time in my life, I have to contend with. They are nasty. This particular home is the first one that I have seen any. But when it rains, they get in. I thank FFR for giving them a name!

But in this area the grossest bug has to be the waterbug! When I first saw one in 1987, I had to run and get my camera. I rushed and got the film developed and mailed copies to my friends in Illinois, trying to garner sympathy for having to live here

What is the difference between a waterbug and a cockroach?

There is no difference.

This roach is also known as a "waterbug" or "palmetto bug".

This is a horrible thread! But I really brought it up because last night I was awoken at 2:30 by a little person that HAD to have a glass of water. Anyway little E falls back asleep, but I was wide awake! So I got up to get a drink and I went outside to check to see what Alberto was bringing. Well in my path was a "waterbug." E's big wheel was there too. I had PERFECT timing and kicked the big wheel just as the bug passed under the wheel! Score one for me! Anyway, I came home now and the friggen bug is STILL on its' back trying to turnover! That is almost 19 hours!

Yikes! That is one persistent bug! We have some nasty bugs in our house, but we can't seem to find out what they are. They give me the willys though. We guess that they are some sort of centipede or in the family. It has tons of legs!

yea, earwigs happen up here too once its muggy out. they don't freak me out much, they are pretty small. haven't seen one in awhile...what freaks me out is that once I had a centipide the size of my pinky finger run across my bath towel once when I was drying off! I killed the thing, it was like killing a small animal! to this day, I check my bath towels before drying off!

Yeah, centipedes are creepy looking. But trust me, don't step on an earwig, that hurts as much as a bee sting.

Oh, yucky- had not thought of it! Did it swell up or itch?

It swelled up a bit, but didn't itch. I stepped on a bee once too (I don't like shoes), and it felt the same way.

I stepped on one when I was about seven. Swelled up and itched!

Maybe you were just more sensitive than I was. (Of course, I never wore shoes, I'm surprised I could feel the bottom of my feet!) I think I was also a tad bit older, somewhere around 11...

I had cousins-in-law (lol at least thats who they were to us- extended expanded family) move to Dallas in the mid-80s. I remember getting a post-card from one of them saying it was the norm to check the bed-sheets each night, and the shoes each morning for scorpions!!

No offense to anyone here, but I would never want to live in Texas.

All bugs love to bite or sting me! But I did sting myself too. I was playing in the neighbors yard barefoot doing cartwheels when I landed on a bee.

as i've mentioned before, we live in a rural area.  the upside is that since we moved to the sticks, we haven't had to contend with nasty roaches.  if your neighbors have them, you will get them and they are a pisser to get rid of.  besides the usual daddy long legs and the ocassional brown recluse (fiddleback spider), we have scorpions.  i've never been stung, but my middle boy says it burns like the devil  we've never had one inside, but we have tarantulas too!

one "nice" bug we do get every winter is ladybugs!  and to have ladybugs in your home in the winter is good luck!

i can't blame you on that!  i'm all itchy now just thinking of them!  the second year after being there, we had scorpions inside pretty often, but we fumigate inside and under the house twice a year, so it's not really so bad.  spiders creep me out!

Yeah I wasn't too happy to see you had scorpions but the big spiders just sent me over the edge!

we had a bad strain of ladybugs up here about 5-6 yrs ago for a couple of summers. they were more orange than red, and these suckers bit! Now they are gone. It was surreal. I'd say up until that point if I ever say a lady bug crawling around me, I'd let it be. But these suckers were mean!

JD, I don't think those are ladybugs. I know there's some sort of beetle that looks like a ladybug but really isn't.

really? wow ok-thanks! I can go back to liking ladybugs.

I remember for a few years in gradeschool the teachers would give us covered dixie cups filled with ladybugs that we were supposed to give our moms to put in our gardens. I wonder if that wasn't some sort of CIA experiement or something, in hind-sight.... Where did they get that many ladybugs and why would they do that???

You can actually order ladybugs to put them in your garden, they eat the aphids that eat the plants.
