In case you don't remember or missed it, Skype is a "voice over IP" service that will let you talk from compter to computer for free. They also have a "Skype Out" service that will let you make calls to regular landline phones for about 2cents/min. I've used the Skype out service for a while.
Until the end of the year, Skype is offering free outbound calling to the US and Canada.
Technically, all you need is a microphone, speakers, and a farily fast internet conection. It won't work on dialup. For best quality both ways, it works best with a computer headset but thats not necessary. A headset keeps the mic up close to you, and the headphones help eliminate any room echo back to the other party.
Computer to computer calling sounds better than a regular phone because it has more bandwidth available for better audio.
If you give it a try, my username on Skype is "dovetails". There are a couple other FFR'ers on Skype too. You can have up to five users in a conference at a time. I think JR is planning on getting it so he can get Skype calls on the air so several of us could talk through Skype on air at the same time.
I've read a lot about it and it is safe to use. It's owned by Ebay now. No hidden spyware, viruses, and it doesn't put your computer at risk to the Internet.
I've heard of this for sometime now Web and I'm quite interested in giving it a whirl...but I'm always scared od downloading something I shouldn't especially as half the time I don't know what I'm doing.
I guess I worry i too much - all my banking is internet based but that terrified me at first. I suppose I am concerned that I will download something that might compromise stuff like the banking
Being "owned" by EBay doesn't inspire me - but I guess they should be pretty good at stuff on the net...?
Thanks Web...You do reassure me. I rarely download stuff....but i just might but I'll see if any of my friends are using it as it sems a bit daft to bother downloading it if there's no one I know on
Skype Recorder is a surprisingly easy-to-use tool for recording Skype audio conversations. Skype Recorder can record Skype calls automatically. The software has a number of additional handy features such as an automatic record encoding into MP3/WMA/OGG/WAV format, all Skype versions support, conversations in either single or dual audio track recording, hidden mode work, a built-in audio player, a built-in FTP-client and an easy-going interface.
