Windows XP Restart After Update Nag

I know JD will like this as he just complained about it in the "Things I hate" thread. I suspect JR would like it too so the broadcast computer doesn't reboot in the middle of the night after a update.

It works in XP Pro, but not sure about XP home. You CAN control that little nagging "Reboot" notice you get after a Windows update. By default it will happily remind you every 10 minutes, which can drive you nuts if you are busy and trying to get something done. It can be changed. Here's how to set it . . . Goto:

Start -> Run
Type: gpedit.msc

Expand the trail and work your way to: Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update

In the Windows Update settings, look in the right pane for: Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations
Double click on that ^

On the Setting Tab active the "Enabled" radio button and enter a time (in minutes) for how often you would like a reminder. The maximum setting is 1440 or 24 hours.

You do have to reboot for this new setting to activate.

Sounds like a tip that would have made a great COMPUTER MINUTE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

You're as big a slacker as JD is!

But thanks for the tip buddy

Yeah, kind of ironic isn't it PIP? Actually, there is a command that can be ran from the command line to not require a reboot, but I though for most of us, rebooting would be easier.

To avoid a reboot, go to:
Start -> Run
Type: cmd
At a command prompt enter: gpupdate.exe /force
and hit enter. That will avoid the reboot and force the new "no nag" setting.

As I read more, it seems it does only work on XP Pro as Home does not have the (group policy) "gpedit" program.

It looks like it can also be done on XP Home but requires adding a new entry in the registry. This is not hard to do, but you have to be VERY careful when messing around in the reigstry or you could kill Windows. The registry hack is at the bottom of this page.

Tweak the reigstry at your own risk.
