Zim

Too strange that you are here today! This morning in front of me was a truck with ZIM on his mudflaps. I was thinking that she has been MIA! BTW JR added a Warren Zevon song that you requested A LONG TIME ago! I sent it to him! Glad to see you!

Hey Zim!

What a pleasant surprise! What's brings you around these parts?

I heard Whistling in the Dark this morning and wondered if Zim requested it...

Aw, you guys are too kind - even remembering songs I request (yes, I did request Whistling in the Dark). And how bizarre you'd see my name this morning!

Yes, I've been out of it for a while. Kind of became a recluse all around (ask my ski group, they'll vouch for that).

Anyway, my mom passed away from cancer earlier this year - so to all you smokers out there... STOP. Okay, preaching done. She would have been 55 today. Heavy sigh. So I figured I'd come over this way and listen to my favorite songs and read some goofy posts! So sorry I've been so out of touch, I know everyone loves it when people fall off the plaNet.

So my time more recently has been spent renovating the townhouse. I'm putting it on the market and buying a single-family house, maybe a fixer-upper. My parents had sold all their stuff and RVed permanently as of about 2 years ago. So my dad went back on the road - I told him if he ever wanted to get a place together, that'd be great. So he's here now (the road is a lonely place, me thinks) helping fix my house up to sell and then staying permanently (but keeping the RV for those times when I drive him crazy).

I think that catches me up for the past few months. Anyone else have anything to catch me up on? We can make this a catch-Zim-up-on-things thread. And it looks like I have a Warren Zevon song to request. And I still have to find a way to talk Jeremy into adding Fatboy Slim's Weapon of Choice...

Ack! Wouldn't you know it, I was in the morning meeting and missed the Zevon tune! I'll put that on my list of things to do tomorrow morning....

Glad to have you back Zim! I know life gets in the way sometimes.

I'd print out your message and give it to my hubby, but I doubt it would do any good. His dad passed away 2 years ago, and he still smokes. And with the job situation in limbo (I haven't told anyone about that yet, I'll put that in another thread), I doubt he's going to stop now.

Sorry to hear that Zim!

Smokers (i'm an ex-smoker so don't go for my jugular!) always find excuses why they can't quit. Hubby's parents should quit. Strokes, open heart, lost 3 family members to lung cancer and they are still puffing away. Mom-in-laws latest excuse is that she can't quit with all the troubles her son is going through. (hubby's brother)

Man grandma stopped after smoking for over 50 years. It really surprised me, because she was always smoking. And she just stopped cold turkey. So I figure if my grandma can do it, anyone can.

We have a free smoking cessation clinic in our area that Mz's hubby went to once and it worked great. But then he stopped going and now won't go back.

My mom smoked for over 30 years and when Little A was born she quit cold turkey and hasn't started back up. In fact she can't stand the smell of others smoking anymore. We tried and tried for years to get her to quit but it finally hit her that she might not be around to see her Grand kids graduate from high school.

I quit with the boy, but went back after he was born. But this time when I got pregnant I promised myself that I would not go back- so far so good, but it is the hardest thing to do. Bad for you or not, that stuff is addicting!

Zim,

I'm sorry to hear about your Mother. 55 is so young, you must feel somewhat cheated losing her at that age.

My Mom is a heavy smoker too. I worry about her so much, but she is adament she will not stop. She often says it's the only thing she has if you press her on it, which is of course sad on many levels. The worse things get around her the more she clings to her cigarettes.

Anyway, it really is nice to have you around today. I hope we get to see more of you in the future.

Thanks Jeremy... yes, 55 is too young. You always think of all the ironies afterward. She used to tell me, often enough that I remembered, that she didn't see herself living to old age. But she always thought it would be a car accident. Kind of makes you wonder if it wasn't a self-fulfilling prophecy on some level, or if we all have an idea of our lifespan on some level. Or maybe it was just her way of creating closure for us if something ever happened to her because she always told us if she died tomorrow she'd have no regret, blah blah blah. I've gotten into the habit of saying similar to my daughter about the no regrets thing, but that I do see myself living a good long time.

I guess everyone has their vice, smokers just have one they have to wear on their sleeve (and in the rest of their clothes!) I bite my lip, and even though the dentist warns me of mouth cancer, I can't seem to stop my nervous habit.

JD - the song was Excitable Boy - I just thoguht the lyrics were SO disturbing, especially for such an upbeat song!
