Any good advice for a plugged ear?

Anyone know a good way to unplug an ear?

I tried eardrops, but that only seemed to make it worse. My hearing out of my left ear is quite a bit less than out of my right the last few days and it feels plugged up.

About two years ago I got really sick with Bronchitis, Larengitis and Tonsilitis all at the same time and at that time I also had a completely plugged ear that appeared to be some kind of infection. When everything else got better so did the ear.

It's not as bad this time, so I don't think it's an infection, plus I'm not sick in any other way. It just feels, I don't know, muffled I guess.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Alcohol and water mix will dry out your ear. It is good for ear infections and swimmer's ear.

Ruby, you mean like rubbing alcohol?

Yes sir, I think JD might not be as effective!

Causes
When water gets into the ear, it may bring in bacterial or fungal particles. Usually the water runs back out; the ear dries out; and the bacteria and fungi don’t cause any problems. But sometimes water remains trapped in the ear canal, and the skin gets soggy. Then bacteria and fungi grow, flourish, and can infect the outer ear.

Symptoms

  • The ear feels blocked and may itch.
  • The ear canal becomes swollen, sometimes swelling shut.
  • The ear starts draining a runny milky liquid.
  • The ear becomes very painful and very tender to touch, especially on the cartilage in front of the ear canal.
If you experience these symptoms or if glands in the neck become swollen, see your doctor.

      Prevention
If your ear feels moist or blocked after swimming, hairwashing, or showering, tilt your head sideways with that ear up, pull the ear upward and backward to put in eardrops to dry out the ear. Wiggle your ear to get the drops all the way down in the ear canal, and then turn your head to let them drain out. These eardrops are sold without prescription; check with your pharmacist.

WARNING: If you have an ear infection, have had a perforated or otherwise injured eardrum, or ear surgery, you should consult an ear, nose, and throat specialist before swimming or using any type of ear drops. If you don’t know if you have ever had a perforated, punctured, ruptured, or otherwise injured eardrum, ask your doctor.

If your doctor says it is safe, make up your own ear drops to use after swimming. Many doctors recommend rubbing alcohol as part of the mixture. As the alcohol evaporates, it absorbs the water, helps dry out the ear, and may even kill the bacteria and fungi that cause swimmer’s ear. Another effective ingredient is boric acid powder (2 tsp./pint) or white vinegar (mixed 50/50 with alcohol). A weak acid environment discourages the growth of bacteria and fungi.

A dry ear is least likely to get infected. Efforts to remove water from your ear should be limited to the drying effects of alcohol or, if you have a perforated eardrum, a hair dryer. You should not use cotton swabs (Q-tips) because they pack material deeper in the narrow ear canal, irritate the thin skin of the ear canal, and make it “weep” or bleed.

If your is a frequently recurring problem, your otolaryngologist (ENT doctor) may recommend placing oily (or lanolin) ear drops in your ears before swimming to protect them from the effects of the water.

People with itchy, flaky ears or ears that have wax build up are very likely to develop swimmer’s ear. They should be especially conscientious about using the alcohol ear drops as described whenever water gets trapped into the ears. It may also help to have ears cleaned out each year before the swimming season starts.

My daughter had a plugged up ear a few months ago - usually she gets infections, but this was just wax buildup. The doctor has a solution and a plastic syringe (not a needle, just a plastic tip). And she very forcibly shot the solution into the ear and what came out was a foamy waxy mess. But it cleared it up instantly. Turns out it's pretty much a hydrogen perozide and water solution. I think a ratio of 1 hydrogen peroxide to 3 water. But don't hold it in like ear drops. Actually get the solution in there fast and let it drain out fast. Might want to call yout nurse practitioner... they ought to know about this one and know the definite ration and amount. Now we do it at home regulalrly when her ear is plugged but not in pain (ie., no infection).

My husband is always getting wax buildup in his ear. He has freakishly small earholes and I don't think it allows the wax to come out. Anyway, we put straight peroxide in there and let it sit for a bit and then take a bulb syringe and shoot warm water in there. Works like a charm. Hope your ear gets to feeling better, Jeremy.

glad to know that my hubby isn't the only one with the freakishly small ear holes! wax build up is always a problem for him. it sounds like we do the same thing Trish. Hmmm he hasn't asked me to do this in quite some time. Maybe he just doesn't want to hear me. LOL!

Are you sure you aren't thinking about that Friends episode where Chandler peed on her jellyfish sting?

I also think you can drink the stuff ONCE - if you ever find yourself lost at sea with no food or water. Twice is toxic, however. Thank you, Discover Channel!

      1. First remove any adherent tentacles that will cause further delivery of venom. The tentacles should be lifted off the skin (don't scrape them off -- this causes further stings). Use a stick or some other object to remove the tentacle(s) so as not to get your fingers stung.
      2. Next, rinse the affected area with sea water to wash away any adherent nematocysts. DO NOT use fresh water, since this will activate the nematocysts. DO NOT scrub as this will only activate the nematocysts and cause further venom delivery.
      3. Nematocysts are inactivated by vinegar (or dilute acetic acid 5-10%). NOTE: If no vinegar is handy, then human urine will do in a pinch. If you have a choice in the matter, use a man's urine rather than a woman's urine. This is because females are more prone to occult urinary tract infections, thus introducing bacteria. Male urine is considered sterile, since men are much less likely to have a urinary tract infection.
      4. If there are any nematocyst still adherent after rinsing with sea water and inactivation with vinegar/ urine, then try the following to remove any remaining nematocysts:

        • Dust the area with baking powder, or flour, then carefully scrape off with the dull back edge of a butter knife....
        • Or use aerosol spray shaving cream to coat the area, then shave off any remaining nematocyst

      5. Symptoms of pain can be treated with topical anesthetics; these are generally contained in sunburn preparations; look for the active ingredients like lidocaine or benzocaine.
      6. Persistent redness, inflammation or itchiness can be treated with topical steroid cream like Hydrocortisone 0.5% cream.
      7. If you begin to develop persistent muscle spasms, seek medical attention; your doctor will need to administer intravenous calcium gluconate.
      8. Secondary bacterial infection may set in, especially if vesicles form. If this happens you will need to see a doctor for antibiotics.

If you pee on your toes when you have athletes foot, it will clear up. Your toes will smell like pee, but they won't itch.
