Yay Congress!!!

Finally!

Two thumbs up for our Congress.

Thursday, congress approved a bill to make it illegal for porn sites to use innocent words in their domain names to trick people (kids especially) into visiting their sites.

This is too long in coming, but I'm glad they got this through.

Why is it that when I see a thread called "Yay Congress" I IMMEDIATELY assume the poster is being sarcastic?

I'm glad you weren't! That's great news! I'm sick of having porn sites pop up everytime I do a search!

But now comes the enforcement. How well will that work?

I still think they should force through their other plan to make porn sites us a different extension that dot com.

I do not understand why the porn industry fought that so hard. what would be so horrible about them having their own extension like dot xxx ?

My understanding is that the proposal would not require the porn sites to stop all other domains and only use .xxx. Since that was not a requirement, even the pro-family groups were against it. At that point, it would only give them antoher avenue to use.

I think one of the biggest problems with all this stuff is that it is world-wide. US laws are not enforcible in other countries. It almost like we need an internet "UN" to make world wide laws.

I believe there was some sites that DID want the xxx thing , that would make it easier for users to find them and help keep kids out so bible thumping ( no offence )parents wouldn't/COULDN't  complain . It's like Playboy wants your buisness , but even Hef knows it's not 4 kids.

aw excellent! they can collectively voice their displeasure, then threaten to write a letter voicing their displeasure to any non-compliants....like the real UN!

YAY!  It's about time someone started trying to do something to keep little kids away from internet porn.  This is probably a very small step in the grand scheme, but still...

Unfortunately, it sounds like they can still post spam on child related websites with porn. I get so much of that crap (sorry Ruby, it's the nicest word I can use for this) on the COTA forum. But at least this is a step in the right direction.

Yes, that guestbook/forum spam is a problem.

About an hour ago, I disabled a customer's guestbook just for that reason. The guestbook was trying to reply with the "thank you" and she didn't have and admin email set so they were all coming back to me. After about 50 of those bouncing back to me in an hour, I disabled the script so it won't run. It was short little comments, but they were entering spam in the "home page" area.
