Can Anyone Help With This?

I think I complained about this the other day. I keep getting a reminder notice on my computer, multiple times a day, to register a program. From what I can find this program is not on this pc. Does anyone know how I would go about getting rid of this message? It's driving me crazy!

No guarantee, but I can try . . .

What exactly is the popup saying? What program is it?

It's MSN Content Plus. I believe it's for MSN messenger which you know I don't have. I just have Trillian. It's telling me I have like 25 days to register this. Then it pops up and wants me to enter a product number.

It looks like that is a bundle of Messenger extras like extra smilies, winks, etc.

Try this:

Hit: ctrl-alt-delete

That will bring up the task manager.

In the task manager, go to the "Processes" tab.

Scroll down through there and look for a process called "msnappm.exe". If you find it, click once on it and then select "End Process". See if that stops the popups . . . if so, that is the one doing it but it will come back the next time you reboot.

Lets start there and see if that stops the popup. If so, then we'll try to figure out where it is getting started at reboot.

i don't see that one. Just msnlogs.exe   msmsgs.exe    msnloggm.exe

which I am guessing is linked to Trillian.

I tried to use msn's uninstaller that I found on the web but it wants me to use my account email. So that doesn't work.

Ok, lets try this . . .

Go to "My Computer" and then the hard drive and then into the Windows folder. If you get the warning about "Don't go here!" ignore that and go on in there anyway.

In the Windows folder, look for that same file name: msnappm.exe

If you find it, delete it and then reboot.

Turns out I'm worthless. I'm talking to Woo on Yahoo now and that file is not on her machine.

I just Googled that popup and everything I found points back at that one file. It must be something else causing it in this case.

WEB! I looked further under windows since it didn't go away. The file msnlogm has an original name of MSNAPPm.EXE     and the other file msnlogs.exe  original name is msnapps.exe.

Dang! It says I can't because it's being used by something. The other one says the same too.

Ok, go back into the task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and under the processes, stop the two that the names start with "msn".

For now, just stop those processes and then wait and see if you get any more popups.

THIS is why I hate Microsoft.

We'll make it as difficult as we can for you to stop our extra crap from running on your machine. We know more what you want than you do.

I agree, Web is Da Man! It's always good to have a resident computer geek around. I even let him come out of the basement!
