Riggs the Brewers Just Traded Carlos Lee...

Brewers trade Lee to Texas

Having come to the conclusion that they wouldn't be able to re-sign leftfielder Carlos Lee and with the playoffs a faint hope at present, the Milwaukee Brewers pulled the trigger Friday and sent Lee to the Texas Rangers in a six-player deal.

The Brewers dealt Lee and minor league outfielder Nelson Cruz to the Rangers in exchange for outfielders Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix, reliever Francisco Cordero and minor league pitcher Julian Cordero.

Sources close to the team confirmed Friday morning the deal had been made.

The deal actually was agreed upon after midnight as Brewers general manager Doug Melvin and his staff stayed late Thursday at Miller Park and worked the telephones. Several teams showed interest in Lee, including Detroit, Oakland and both Los Angeles clubs, but Melvin felt he got the best return from Texas.

Earlier Thursday, the Brewers reportedly made a four-year, $48 million contract extension offer to Lee that he turned down. At that stage, the Brewers felt it unlikely they would be able to keep Lee, who is eligible for free agency after the season.

Lee was believed to be seeking an extension similar to the five-year, $65 million deal first baseman Derrek Lee received last year from the Chicago Cubs.

That left the Brewers with two choices: keep Lee and hope he could turn around the club's sagging playoff hopes or trade him and get something in return. With 11 losses in their last 15 games, the Brewers dropped six games below .500 and six games behind National League wild carder leader Cincinnati.

The Brewers open a three-game series against the Reds at home tonight, a series that Lee, ironically, said Wednesday that the club needed to sweep Cincinnati. Now, they'll have to try to do so without him.

Lee ranked among the NL leaders with 28 home runs and 81 RBI, and along with Washington's Alfonso Soriano was considered one of the top sluggers available on the trade market. The deadline for making deals without requiring waivers is Monday.

The Brewers acquired Lee before the 2005 season in a deal with the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Scott Podsednik. He made the NL all-star team both seasons with Milwaukee, establishing himself as one of the top sluggers in the league.

Last season, Lee batted .265 with career highs of 32 homers and 114 RBI.

The deal was somewhat surprising in that not only did the Brewers trade Lee but also Cruz, arguably their top outfield prospect in the minor leagues. Cruz was batting .302 with 20 home runs and 73 RBI at Class AAA Nashville, and was considered by many to be the logical successor to Lee if he were traded.

But the Brewers did get a pair of outfielders back in Mench and Nix.

Mench, 28, who has been the Rangers' starting rightfielder, was batting .284 with 12 homers and 50 runs batted in, in 87 games.

Nix, 25, began the season as Texas' centerfielder but was sent down after batting only .094 (3 for 32) in nine games. At Class AAA Oklahoma, he was hitting .263 with 10 homers and 53 RBI.

Cordero, 31, established himself as one of the top closers in t

I'm, I'm. Stunned and saddened beyond belief.

First. Nelson Cruz? This guy may have been our top overall prospect? WHY THE HELL would we include him?

Second. Cordero? Apparantly they are giving up on Turnbow (which is fine, but shocking).

Third and most important. We clearly will always be a second division team. We can not compete in the major leagues because we don't have the money and the dream they've been sellling us on is just a lie. Attanasio should just pick them up and move them somewhere else and let us get a triple A team in here.

Disgusting.

I don't get it. $48 mill is a lot of money. Any 1/2 way decent believes the deserves A-rod money.....no matter what. pathetic. how's that make you feel that they just sort of wrote off this season......ITS STILL JULY!???????

That's why I was so pi**ed at Turnbow. That craphead should be VERY WELL AWARE that HE lost Carlos Lee for us. His blown saves the past few weeks are the difference between a winning record and the one we have now!

$15 mil a year is a lot, but if we have ever had a player that was worth it Carlos was it. (A-Rod is getting over $25 mil a year).

This team has no soul, and this loss is the only excuse they needed to totally go into the tank now.

What REALLY makes me angry is that WE ARE DOING OUR PART! We are packing that stadium night after night to nearly 80% of capacity to watch a LOSING BALLCLUB! Where is our payback? What do we get for our loyalty?

If these morons would bite the bullet and do what they need to do to win games they would sell out EVERY NIGHT and we'd be like Cleveland in the 90's.

I'm so sick and tired of the economics of baseball. Just so sick of it.

That's what makes me so mad JD. I feel like I've had that taken from me. Like I can't just enjoy a game for the game it is anymore. Money has just turned it so ugly. Everytime I see some crappy schlub in left field it's just gonna be a reminder that we can't compete in the major leagues.

Give me a minor league club. No money involved. Every single kid hustles his a** off because he's hungry to get the attention of the big league club. THAT'S where real baseball is played now.

I know you like Beloit Brewers. I sometimes walk over to the baseball diamond by the park by my house to watch the city leagues play. Pure love of the game.

Press conference at noon. I'll be watching and counting Melvins lies and excuses.

They just talked to Lee and he said he'd like to come back here at the end of the year. yeah right. They always say that.

WHAT THE HELL DOES IT SAY ABOUT A BALLCLUB when the quickest way out of town is to be an all-star? Show us you can hit and we'll send you on your way!

DAMN!

People could pay me to say something mean about their boss. Then they can claim they don't know how that happened!

Hey JR - what do you think of your new third baseman?

I will tell you a decent defensive guy, but he has lost a lot of his offense since the Phillies signed him years ago.

Yes I did. That's good. Someone needs to light a fire under his a**!

During the press conference one of the reporters asked a very pointed question of Melvin. He said "You claim you were prepared to spend $12 a year on Carlos, but now you've traded him. Why should the fans beleive this club is going to invest in it's players and are you willing to tell them right now that the $12 million you just saved is going to be spent on players and not put back into your pockets?"

Melvin danced around with that fuzzy math they like to use, just saying "We did not do a deal for prospects, we did a deal for major league players, and Mench & Cordero earn almost as much as Lee does so it's a wash".

The reporter pointed out that Cordero was a club option at the end of the year and we are not required to keep him, to which Melvin kind of hemmed and hawed and said "Well, assuming we keep him".

But they totally glossed over the point that Mench and Cordero make what Carlo's is making NOW, which is only like 7 million. THAT WASN'T THE QUESTION! The question was will you still spend that $12 million on players next year!

I hate the way they talk baseball as if it were military secrets! Just be straight with us! "NO! We're releived we didn't have to extend ourselves and there's no reason to beleive that we'll dip into free agency with that 12 mil a year!"
