The Penguin in the southwest with DS!

here are the promised penguin pics of our little adventure to palo duro canyon and santa fe.  WARNING!  i am NOT a professional photographer!

right off, had to go 1.5 unplanned hours out of the way to pick up the girl at school.  here they are ready to begin our adventure....

from OKC to amarillo, it's only about 4(ish) hours, so the trip was pretty good. we took a break at the johnson ranch overlook (as in lyndon b.)  now we can say we've seen the johnson ranch, which looks like the rest of the texas panhandle --  WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE OPEN RANGE...

check out the cool grill the penguin is sitting on -- shaped like the state of texas!

on to canyon.  at the room, isaac decided he wanted to hold the penguin hostage...

after we checked in, we went to the panhandle plains historical museum which we all really enjoyed (except isaac, because he doesn't like anything anyone else does).   everything from prehistoric history to geology to ranching to area fine artists are is exhibited.  soooooo much to see!...

yes, jacob is your typical male teenager with typical wishful thinking!...

as well as a goof --  NOTE, penguin is a paying customer...

on to palo duro canyon to see the show TEXAS!.  first we stopped at the canyon overlook to take some pictures ...

made the cattle call bbq, which the kids were not impressed with...

i had to remind them that back in the day, the cowboys were lucky that if on their cattle drives they actually had meat with their beans!

then the show, which isaac and i missed the first half of because he turned into mr. hyde, the devil child!, but after i threatened him with bodily harm and monsters and selling him to the indians, he finally calmed down after intermission and we made the second half of the drama...

see the canyon ridge in the background?  well, when the show begins the opening scene is an "indian" on horseback on that ridge; then when the drama ends, it's dark, and the it ends on that same ridge with a "cowboy" on a horse and an "indian" on a horse,  spotlighted --  then fireworks, etc...

we continued our adventure to santa fe.  our next stop was at clines corners which basically is the fork in the road where you can continue west on i-40 to albuquerque or take the "cut across" to santa fe.  and we just stopped there because we always do...

our visit to santa fe was mainly to check on my mom.  she is really slowing down, so we didn't do as much as i thought we would.  santa fe means "holy faith" thus it is the city of holy faith and has many historic catholic churches.  so mainly the pictures i took were of some of those churches.  (you can take the girl out of the church, but you can't take the church out of the girl..... )

my brother who is in afghanistan right now lives right at the foothills of the sangre de cristo (blood of christ) mountain range.  i had to lighten the pic alot because it was dusk, but i wanted to give an idea of their back deck view

maranda & i walked downtown one afternoon and played tourist.  buro alley is where, waaaay back in the day, traders used to park their burros while they did their business (trading).

the loretto chapel is world famous for the spiral staircase which was constructed with two 360 degree turns and no visible means of support in the late 1800's.  no pics inside...

our lady of guadalupe church is where my parents were married back in 1958.  this one is the original building.  the church where i was baptised and made my first holy communion stands immediately behind...

st francis catherdral contiunes to be the main catholic church in santa fe...

had to get the penguin with st. francis and the other animals...

there are bronze statues all over downtown!  the penguin was tired of walking so he took a break for storytime...

we went to the palace of the governor's museum and the museum of fine arts, but no pics allowed...

alas, it was time to leave.  here are the kids with my mom before we headed back to oklahoma

we didn't make the cadillac ranch in amarillo because it started to rain.....

Great shots!  That's one lucky penguin to have the opportunity to travel all over like that, and never have to pay for hotels, airfare, etc!

the texas panhandle was hot, but santa fe was great as it sits 7,000 elevation at the foothills of the mountains.

my relatives were complaining that it was so hot (lower 90's / no humidity), until i told them that i left oklahoma and 103 plus heat index (5-10)!  at least when we got under a shade tree, we could actually feel the difference.
