Jeremy's Favorite Songs Thread

Ok, a while ago I tried to get everyone to list their top three songs of the moment and almost no one played.

FINE FOR YOU

Who needs ya all anyway Just kidding.

But anyway, today I was exercising and listening to the MP3 player, singing along to some of my favorites and I thought this would be a good ongoing thread. Anyone who wants to play feel free to start your own thread.

Sometimes a songs lyrics just speak to you. You can sing along with it and feel the emotion as you sing it. Some of you may think I'm nuts but I bet Lady Strange gets it and will play along

So the thread concept is to post your songs lyrics, maybe highlight the stuff that really speaks to you and if you want to comment at all maybe do that too.

Most people sing along to a song and never really know what it says, so maybe we can turn each other on to some good ones!

My favorite for the day is POISONS "Something To Believe In". Anytime this song comes on I pretty much sit back, close my eyes, and sing along to it...

Well I, see him on the tv
Preachin bout the promised land
He tells me to believe in jesus
And steals the money from my hand

Some say he was a good man
But lord I think he sinned, yeah

Twenty-two years of mental tears
Cries a suicidal vietnam vet
Who fought a losing war on a foreign shore
To find his country didnt want him back

Their bullets took his best friend in saigon
Our lawyers took his wife and kids, no regrets
In a time I dont remember
In a war he cant forget

He cried forgive me for what Ive done there
Cause I never meant the things I did

Chorus:
And give me something to believe in
If theres a lord above
And give me something to believe in
Oh, lord arise

My best friend died a lonely man
In some palm springs hotel room
I got the call last christmas eve
And they told me the news

I tried all night not to break down and cry
As the tears rolled down my face
I felt so cold and empty
Like a lost soul out of place

And the mirror, mirror on the wall
Sees my smile it fades again

Chorus

Sometimes I wish to God I didnt know now
The things I didnt know then
Road you gotta take me home

Solo

I drive by the homeless sleeping on a cold dark street
Like bodies in an open grave
Underneath the broken old neon sign
That used to read jesus saves

A mile away live the rich folks
And I see how theyre living it up
While the poor they eat from hand to mouth
The rich is drinkin from a golden cup

And it just makes me wonder
Why so many lose, so few win

Chorus

You take the high road
And Ill take the low road

Sometimes I wish to God I didnt know now
The things I didnt know then

And give me something to believe in

----------------

Hmm, I was gonna highlight the parts I love most and realized I'd be highlighting the entire song.

This is an absolute GEM of pop songwriting. A GEM!

Come on people! Let's salute the writers that can say so much in a three minutes song!

In my opinion, there's not many good NEW songwriters out there, but Rob Thomas of Matchbook 20 is a notable exception. THIS ONE always stops me dead in my tracks to sing along to... (Favorite line: There's an awful lot of breathing room, but I can hardly move)

Matchbox 20 - IF YOU'RE GONE

I think Ive already lost you
I think youre already gone
I think Im finally scared now
You think Im weak - but I think youre wrong
I think youre already leaving
Feels like your hand is on the door
I thought this place was an empire
But now Im relaxed - I cant be sure

I think youre so mean - I think we should try
I think I could need - this in my life
I think Im just scared - I think too much
I know this is wrong its a problem Im dealing

If youre gone - maybe its time to go home
Theres an awful lot of breathing room
But I can hardly move
If youre gone - baby you need to come home
Cuz theres a little bit of something me
In everything in you

I bet youre hard to get over
I bet the moon just wont shine
I bet my hands I can stay here
I bet you need - more than you mind

I think youre so mean - I think we should try
I think I could need - this in my life
I think Im just scared - that I know too much
I cant relate and thats a problem Im feeling

If youre gone - maybe its time to go home
Theres an awful lot of breathing room
But I can hardly move
If youre gone - baby you need to come home
Cuz theres a little bit of something me
In everything in you

I think youre so mean - I think we should try
I think I could need - this in my life
I think Im just scared - do I talk too much
I know this is wrong its a problem Im dealing

If youre gone - maybe its time to go home
Theres an awful lot of breathing room
But I can hardly move
If youre gone - baby you need to come home
Cuz theres a little bit of something me
In everything in you

All-Time favorite song from Asia.

Incredibly over-dramatic writing and performance but I LOVE IT. High sing-along rating on this one! I imagine the singer on top of a mountain belting this out to the audience below

Asia - THE SMILE HAS LEFT YOUR EYES

I saw you standing hand in hand
And now you come to me the solitary man
And I know what it is that made us live
Such ordinary lives
The where to go the who to see
No one could sympathize
The smile has left your eyes
The smile has left your eyes

And Ive become a rolling stone
I dont know where to go or what to call my own
But I can see that black horizon glooming
Ever close to view
Its over now its not my fault
See how this feels for you
The smile has left your eyes
The smile has left your eyes

But I never thought Id see you
Standing there with him
So dont come crawling back to me

Now its too late you realized
Now theres no one can sympathize
Now that the smile has left your eyes
Now its too late you realized
Now theres no one can sympathize
Now its too late you realized
Now that the smile has left your eyes

Have you ever been radio station hopping and come upon a song you love, but you're disappointed because you've already missed your favorite part? It's funny, most songs are only a few minutes long, but I almost always have a favorite part.

Exactly! Or sometimes, I'll have a CD on, then yell at a driver or something, and miss my favorite part of the song, so I either have to search back or restart the song.

Ok, I know my list is a little sap and ballad heavy, but what can I say, these are the songs I usually really enjoy the most.

Allison Krauss did "When You Say Nothing At All" and it was good, but I much prefer it sung from the male perspective (perhaps because it allows me to relate better to it as I sing along) and Ronan Keating has an amazingly cool voice to cover this song with.

Jeremy's ALL-TIME favorite love song...

Ronan Keating - WHEN YOU SAY NOTHING AT ALL

Its amazing how you can speak right to my heart
Without saying a word, you can light up the dark
Try as I may I could never explain
What I hear when you dont say a thing

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
Theres a truth in your eyes saying youll never leave me
The touch of your hand says youll catch me when ever I fall
You say it best..when you say nothing at all

All day long I can hear people talking out loud
But when you hold me near, you drown out the crowd (the crowd)
Try as they may they can never define
Whats been said between your heart and mine

Chorus x 2

(you say it best when you say nothing at all
You say it best when you say nothing at all..)

The smile on your face
The truth in your eyes
The touch of your hand
Lets me know that you need me..

Chorus

(you say it best when you say nothing at all
You say it best when you say nothing at all..)

The smile on your face
The truth in your eyes
The touch of your hand
Lets me know that you need me..

(you say it best when you say nothing at all
You say it best when you say nothing at all..)

I remember reading a Billboard review of the Foreigner - Agent Provocatuer album that said "Every three or so years Foreigner lays down a baby guerilla of a love song, this time it's I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS". Couldn't have said it better myself! I love I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR A GIRL LIKE YOU, HEAD GAMES and some of their other songs, but this one is by far my favorite!

Foreigner - I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS

I gotta take a little time
A little time to think things over
I better read between the lines
In case I need it when Im older

Now this mountain I must climb
Feels like a world upon my shoulders
I through the clouds I see love shine
It keeps me warm as life grows colder

In my life theres been heartache and pain
I dont know if I can face it again
Cant stop now, Ive traveled so far
To change this lonely life

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me

Im gonna take a little time
A little time to look around me
Ive got nowhere left to hide
It looks like love has finally found me

In my life theres been heartache and pain
I dont know if I can face it again
I cant stop now, Ive traveled so far
To change this lonely life

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
And I wanna feel, I want to feel what love is
And I know, I know you can show me

Lets talk about love
I wanna know what love is, the love that you feel inside
I want you to show me, and Im feeling so much love
I wanna feel what love is, no, you just cannot hide
I know you can show me, yeah

I wanna know what love is, lets talk about love
I want you to show me, I wanna feel it too
I wanna feel what love is, I want to feel it too
And I know and I know, I know you can show me
Show me love is real, yeah
I wanna know what love is...

My favorite pop artist of all time has always been Huey Lewis & the News. But I can't say honestly that too many of their lyrics do it for me. They're ALL catchy, and I love to sing along to every one of them, but none of them are particularly creative in my view.

None the less, this is one that would get my vote. I for some reason always envision it being sung as a duet at some point between a male and female singer. I think it's Meatloaf syndrome. I love the songs he duets with Patti Russo.

Huey Lewis & the News - I KNOW WHAT I LIKE

I like things that go fast
Because I know that good things dont ever last
I like believeing in what I want to
Dont like no one to tell me what to do
And I like the times that weve had
But I coundt tell you whats good or bad
Im only hoping that you understand
This feeling that Im feeling when Im holding your hand

I know what I like
I know what I like to do
I know what I like, well what about you?

I like the sound of breaking glass
And if you dont believe me, why do you ask?
I like leaving town, and coming back home
Im going to show you, when were all alone
I like staying up all night
Watching old movies til the morning light
I dont pretend to know whats right or wrong
But I wont like leaving, if I stay here too long

I know what I like
I know what I like to do
I know what I like, well what about you?

I like things that dont change
Because the more something changes, the more it stays the same
I might be simple, take it easy sometimes
But I can be stubborn when Ive made up my mind

I know what I like
I know what I like to do
I know what I like, well what about you?

And I give them props on this one too. Again, NOT GREAT LYRICS, but still speak to me for some reason...

Huey Lewis & the News - JACOBS LADDER

I met a fan dancer
Down in south side birmingham
She was running from a fat man
Selling salvation in his hand
Now hes trying to save me
Well Im doing alright the best that I can
Just another fallen angel
Trying to get through the night

Step by step, one by one, higher and higher
Step by step, rung by rung climbing jacobs ladder

Coming over the airwaves
The man says Im overdue
Sing along, send some money
Join the chosen few
Well mister Im not in a hurry
And I dont want to be like you
And all I want from tomorrow
Is to get it better than today

Step by step, one by one, higher and higher
Step by step, rung by rung climbing jacobs ladder

Ruh Row!

When I said Ronan Keatings "When You Say Nothing At All" was my all-time favorite love song I had forgotten about the king of love songs, Elton John. He's got two that blow me away.

This one would have to be put in a tie, and maybe even BEAT Ronan Keating!

Elton John - YOUR SONG

Its a little bit funny this feeling inside
Im not one of those who can easily hide
I dont have much money but boy if I did
Id buy a big house where we both could live

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a traveling show
I know its not much but its the best I can do
My gift is my song and this ones for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that its done
I hope you dont mind
I hope you dont mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while youre in the world

I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well theyve got me quite cross
But the suns been quite kind while I wrote this song
Its for people like you that keep it turned on

So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see Ive forgotten if theyre green or theyre blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes Ive ever seen

I guess I should give credit where credit is due, Bernie Taupin is responsible for most great Elton songs, but like Steinman/Meatloaf, a songwriter has to find his voice, and in Elton John Taupin found his.

This is my other favorite...

Elton John - I GUESS THAT'S WHY THEY CALL IT THE BLUES

Dont wish it away
Dont look at it like its forever
Between you and me I could honestly say
That things can only get better

And while Im away
Dust out the demons inside
And it wont be long before you and me run
To the place in our hearts where we hide

And I guess thats why they call it the blues
Time on my hands could be time spent with you
Laughing like children, living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess thats why they call it the blues

Just stare into space
Picture my face in your hands
Live for each second without hesitation
And never forget Im your man

Wait on me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself

Here's a great one I mentioned on the air a couple weeks ago. John Popper of Blues Traveler wrote and performs it.

It's called Hook, and MOST people never even realize he's singing about how he's NOT SINGING ABOUT ANYTHING! It's really kind of an amusing song because it does such a good job of disguising itself in exactly the manner the lyrics say most songs do.

Blues Traveler - HOOK

It doesnt matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel that Ill convey
Some inner truth of vast reflection
But Ive said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it dont matter who you are
If Im doing my job then its your resolve that breaks

Because the hook brings you back
I aint tellin you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely

There is something amiss
I am being insincere
In fact I dont mean any of this
Still my confession draws you near
To confuse the issue I refer
To familiar heroes from long ago
No matter how much peter loved her
What made the pan refuse to grow

Was that the hook brings you back
I aint tellin you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely

Suck it in suck it in suck it in
If youre rin tin tin or anne boleyn
Make a desperate move or else youll win
And then begin
To see
What youre doing to me this mtv is not for free
Its so pc its killing me
So desperately I sing to thee
Of love
Sure but also rage and hate and pain and fear of self
And I cant keep these feelings on the shelf
Ive tried well no in fact I lied
Could be financial suicide but Ive got too much pride inside
To hide or slide
Ill do as Ill decide and let it ride until Ive died
And only then shall I abide this tide
Of catchy little tunes
Of hip three minute ditties
I wanna bust all your balloons
I wanna burn all of your cities
To the ground Ive found
I will not mess around
Unless I play then hey
I will go on all day hear what I say
I have a prayer to pray
Thats really all this was
And when Im feeling stuck and need a buck
I dont rely on luck because...

The hook brings you back
I aint tellin you no lie
The hook...
On that you can rely

Doesn't it? That part about the Vietnam vet is the best. Also he sings it in such a subdued tone, it's really very moving. Almost like he's talking to the listener, telling him a few personal stories.

Lotta Steinman/Loaf in here, there's GOTTA BE!

I challenge you to find a better line than

"Once upon a time was a backbeat
Once upon a time all the chords came to life
And the angels had guitars even before they had wings
If you hang on to a chorus you get through the night"

Such a great, great, song. Rock N' Roll and music in general really can get you through the night (or a dark period). I swear to God I snapped out of a two month depression many years ago just from getting in my car at night and singing along to "Sussudio" by Phil Collins.

No deep meaning there, just fluff. But for whatever reason that moment put the things that were bothering me into perspective, gave me a few minutes of pure happiness that put an end to the depression.

Amazing!

Meat Loaf / Jim Steinman - ROCK AND ROLL DREAMS COME THROUGH

You cant run away forever
But theres nothing wrong with getting a good head start
You want to shut out the night
You want to shut down the sun
You want to shut away the pieces of a broken heart
Thing of how wed lay down together
Wed be listening to the radio so loud and so strong
Every golden nugget coming like a gift of the gods
Someone must have blessed us when he gave us those songs

I treasure your love
I never want to lose it
Youve been through the fires of hell
And I know youve got the ashes to prove it
I treasure your love
I want to show you how to use it
Youve been through a lot of pain in the dirt
And I know youve got the scars to prove it

Remember everything that I told you
Well Im telling you again that its true
When youre alone and afraid
And youre completely amazed
To find theres nothing anybody can do
Keep on believing
And youll discover baby

Theres always something magic
Theres always something new
And when you really, really need it the most
Thats when rock and roll dreams come through
The beat is yours forever
The beat is always true
And when you really, really need it the most
Thats when rock and roll dreams come through...for you...

Once upon a time was a backbeat
Once upon a time all the chords came to life
And the angels had guitars even before they had wings
If you hang on to a chorus you get through the night

I treasure your love
I never want to lose it
Youve been through the fires of hell
And I know youve got the ashes to prove it
I treasure your love
I want to show you how to use it
Youve been through a lot of pain in the dirt
And I know youve got the scars to prove it

Remember everything that I told you
Well Im telling you again that its true
Youre never alone cause you can put on the phones
And let the drummer tell your heart ehat to do
Keep on believing
And youll discover baby

Theres always something magic
Theres always something new
And when you really, really need it the most
Thats when rock and roll dreams come through
The beat is yours forever
The beat is always true
And when you really, really need it the most
Thats when rock and roll dreams come through...for you...

Steinman spins a fantastic tale in most of his songs, this one is one of the best. The video always gets me choked up when the best friend dies in a place crash.

Meat Loaf - Objects In The Rearview Mirror...

The skies were pure and the fields were green
And the sun was brighter than its ever been
When I grew up with my best friend kenny
We were close as any brothers than you ever knew
It was always summer and the future called
We were ready for adventures and we wanted them all
And there was so much left to dream and so much time to make it real

But I can still recall the sting of all the tears when he was gone
They said he crashed and burned
I know Ill never learn why any boy should die so young
We were racing, we were soldiers of fortune
We got in trouble but we sure got around
There are times I think I see him peeling out of the dark
I think hes right behind me now and hes gaining ground

But it was long ago and it was far away, oh God it seems so very far
And if life is just a highway, then the soul is just a car
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are

And when the sun descended and the night arose
I heard my father cursing everyone he knows
He was dangerous and drunk and defeated
And corroded by failure and envy and hate
There were endless winters and the dreams would freeze
Nowhere to hide and no leaves on the trees

And my fathers eyes were blank as he hit me again and again and again
I know I still believe hed never let me leave, I had to run away alone
So many threats and fears, so many wasted years before my life became
My own
And though the nightmares should be over
Some of the terrors are still intact
Ill hear that ugly coarse and violent voice
And then he grabs me from behind and then he pulls me back

There was a beauty living on the edge of town
And she always put the top up and the hammer down
And she taught me everything Ill ever know
About the mystery and the muscle of love
The stars would glimmer and the moon would glow
Im in the back seat with my julie like a romeo
And the signs along the highway all said, caution! kids at play!

Those were the rights of spring and we did everything
There was salvation every night
We got our dreams reborn and our upholstery torn
But everything we tried was right
She used her body just like a bandage
She used my body just like a wound
Ill probably never know where she disappeared
But I can see her rising up out of the back seat now
Just like an angel rising up from a tomb

And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are

She used her body just like a bandage
She used my body just like a wound
Ill probably never know where she disappeared
But I can see her rising up out of the back seat now

This one is HIGHLY singable and paints a very vivid picture in your head...

Marc Cohn - WALKING IN MEMPHIS

Put on my blue suede shoes
And i boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the delta blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
W.c. handy -- won't you look down over me
Yeah i got a first class ticket
But i'm as blue as a boy can be

Then i'm walking in memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of beale
Walking in memphis
But do i really feel the way i feel

Saw the ghost of elvis
On union avenue
Followed him up to the gates of graceland
Then i watched him walk right through
Now security they did not see him
They just hovered 'round his tomb
But there's a pretty little thing
Waiting for the king
Down in the jungle room

(chorus)

They've got catfish on the table
They've got gospel in the air
And reverend green be glad to see you
When you haven't got a prayer
But boy you've got a prayer in memphis

Now muriel plays piano
Every friday at the hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if i would --
Do a little number
And i sang with all my might
And she said --
"tell me are you a christian child?"
And i said "ma'am i am tonight"

(chorus)

Put on my blue suede shoes
And i boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the delta blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
Touched down in the land of the delta blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
