The same day as the Great American Smoke Out the city I live in, Olathe, KS, enacted a smoking ban in all indoor public establishments. This is a fairly common trend around the nation from what I can tell.
Well, it seems that the folks in the local A/A chapter were un-fond of the no smoking signs in their meeting place, so they had a habit of taking them down. The A/A administrators were not pleased with that, so they thought they would invite the local firefighters over to explain the city ordinance and it's importance. The fire department complied... and handed out multiple warning citations. If you ask me, it's pretty harsh to mess with an A/A meeting where you KNOW it's a whole lot of smoking an coffee drinking!
Now here's the ironic part... had the A/A chapter gone and established themselves as a private club AND applied for a LIQUOR LICENSE before the law went into effect they would be able to legally allow smoking in their facility.
