Jon Sanford really isn't a hairy guy, but one of his arm hairs could land him in the coveted Guinness World Records book.

Sanford, 37, has one really long hair on his forearm, and he's hoping it's long enough to vault him into the pantheon of record-breaking hirsute humans. The Jackson man has filled out documents; found two unimpeachable witnesses, the Jackson fire chief and a Jackson police officer; made a video; and now is hoping his name and arm hair will get the thumbs-up from the Guinness record arbiters.

The record of 3.96 inches is now held by a Toronto man. But Sanford's solo hair measures in at a whopping - for arm hair - 4.1 inches.

If Sanford, an industrial food analyst, sets a new record, he plans to buy a copy of the book, which he read as a child. As a youngster, he wondered which record he could try breaking but never thought it would be longest arm hair.

"It's every kid's dream to break a record," Sanford said Sunday. "You think about the one for longest fingernails, but then that would be kind of inconvenient, but longest arm hair is kind of easy."

While sipping a soda at a fast-food restaurant last summer, he noticed a Ripley's Believe It or Not drawing on the side of his cup about the record for longest eyebrow hair. A light bulb went on.

"That's what got the wheels turning. I thought, 'Hey, maybe my arm hair is something special,' " said Sanford, who didn't notice the one long hair on his right forearm until he was in college.

His 8- and 7-year-old daughters think it's cool that their father is going for a Guinness record, though Sanford said his wife is a little less enthusiastic. Sanford said it never occurred to him to trim the arm hair, which usually falls off during the winter when he wears long-sleeved shirts.

"Until Guinness tells me that I've got the record, I'm hanging on to it," he said. "It's still growing, so maybe I'll go for another record. Or I might sell it on eBay."
