What would you do?

This is sad.

I was on my way back to work and was stopped at the stop sign where our street meets the state highway that runs through our town. Traffic was heavy right then and I had to wait before I could make my left turn across the highway. I noticed cars were slowing way down as they passed in front of me.

About 1/3 way down the block to my right was a kitten in the right lane of traffic that couldn't get up. His head was up and he was up on his front "elbows" but it looked like he couldn't move anything on his back 1/2.

What to do?

Probably 10 cars slowly drove around him and went on their way.

What to do?

I thought about pulling over and calling our vet's office and asking them if they would take it and do what was necessary . . . but I wasn't about to pay for its care or the cost to put it down (if it would need be). I thought about going on like everyone else and pretending I didn't see it.

As I sat there waiting on traffic and trying to decide what to do, a railroad truck came by and stopped. The driver put his flashers on and got out and went to the kitten. At that time, it was clear enough, I could go and I felt better that someone stopped to help the poor thing.

I'm sorry this is sad, but what should one do? Call the police (no animal control here)? Take it to the vet and make it their problem? Knock on the closest doors to see if anyone will claim it?

I suppose a lot of the people that drove around it and went on were thinking the same thing . . . . "I don't know what to do".

What would you do?

my big softie heart woulda probably took him. I have plenty of people around here that would take him in. But I understand Web. You got enough vet bills right now.

I would like to think I would have picked him up, but I don't honestly know that I would have.

It would be an easier decision for me because I could just take him to the local Human Society, although if he were injured they would just put him to sleep and I don't know if I could stand that, so then I'd probably wind up stuck with him and his bills

probably only because I live so close to the humane society, I woulda grabbed it up and ran it over there. I know them folks would be all over the situation. no way could I leave it be. no way.

well if it was me I would have called the police I am sure they would have taken care of it either by putting it out of its misery or took it to a vet to let them do it. I have come across things like this before and it breaks my heart.

I almost caused a pile up on I-90 a month ago to avoid hitting a kitten in the middle of the road. I cant stand to see animals get hurt, they are so innocent.

Sorry to hear that, I too, would have called the local SPCA. Sorry that you do not have one there. It makes my decision eaiser.

I would've picked the kitten up and taken it to a vet. It might've been someone's pet, and that's what I would want someone to do if my cat were in that situation.

This is sad...made me cry

I would have stopped all traffic to pick up the poor little kitten.  I did this once in heavy traffic.

I left my two cats back in Brisbane when I moved here and I miss them dearly.  Made me think of them.  Going to visit them on Sunday night when I fly there for a short break   I am a great big sucker for cats...for any animal really.

Look what she did!

VANCOUVER, Wash.

When Christine Gamache was driving along Interstate 205 and saw a pig fall out the back of a tractor-trailer rig, she didn't just scratch her head and drive on. She pulled over and stood by the 500-pound animal, possibly averting a freeway pile-up, the State Patrol said.

''She stayed by the pig until we showed up,'' Trooper Todd Gates said.

Gamache told Gates she'd been driving northbound on I-205 on Monday when the pig somehow fell out the back of an open-top box trailer. It hit the ground spinning.

''It rolled across the highway into the median,'' Gates said.

After dodging the pig and another truck, Gamache, who had no cell phone, stopped her car and walked up to the pig. The pig was favoring a sore left rear leg but didn't seem seriously hurt, Gates said.

Later, Gates, paramedics and a Clark County sheriff's deputy joined them on the median until a man who works with livestock arrived on the scene to take the pig to safety until its owners could be located.

Seeing that it was alive, I'd pick it up and try to get it some help. I'm a soft heart for animals that way.

I wanted to help it, but I guess my question was not so much "should" I help, but more "how". We don't have an animal control or humane society here in our small town.

Understandable. That does make it much harder.
