Christmas Traditions

Every year when "A Christmas Story" comes on I have to watch it, sometimes twice.

And it's on in 6 minutes.

usually on christmas eve, I'll stay out at the folks house. I'll be up late, and one of them there tv stations has that movie on nonstop for 24 hrs. I'll usually catch it about 1 am...

I'm not a Christmas movie person. This year, I'm bucking Christmas tradition. I'm staying home Christmas Eve instead of going to the inlaws. This year, Christmas is going to be about peace, love, and happiness for me as opposed to being made uncomfortable and dealing with the step-mother-in-law's petty, rude comments and boorish behavior.

as far as rude borish people go, it's been my misfortune to run into many of them. I find that as often as we must deal with people we can't stand it comforts me to know that in a situation like yours that the other beings involved are the ones I am there to support, and I have the knowledge that if I put my best foot forward and not let others bother me I can bring a little peace to the ones I am there for. Knowing that I am the better person for not being drawn into the negativity allows me to sleep just fine at night. They will have to live with themselves, and know that their own souls are not as pure as they would like.

Excellent advice, Willie.  That is exactly why I attended for so many years. This year, however, I'm sticking by my convictions. Over the summer, my husband elected to have an extramarital affair and went as far as to move out and live with this woman for about 10 weeks. For the first several weeks, I assumed he was involved with someone but he vehemently denyed it, insisting that he was staying with a male co-worker while he sorted things out in his own mind.  During this time, knowing that he was lying to me and that he not only had not filed for divorce from me, but also refused to even discuss the subject with me, his parents elected to have this woman and her children over to their house for a nice lunch... kind of a get to know you and welcome you to the family type of a deal. If that is not tacky, insulting, and repugnant behavior then I don't know what is. (referring to both my spouse and his parents)

In light of that, and knowing myself as I do I'm not attending his familial functions anymore. I have quietly put up with a lot of undeserved insults from these people over the years. No more. I'll not sit quietly and take it from them any longer. It is in the spirit of the season I will decline to tell them exactly what I think of them in their own home in front of the rest of the family. I'm also not going to engage in the hypocracy necessary to eat their holiday dinner as part of a family that clearly has no value for me.

Hey Mema- I don't blame you a bit for not wanting to go.  It seems to me in this spirit of trying to "Start Over" that maybe you AND HE make some new traditions.

Having to spend holidays with the sister-in law and in-laws that never liked me was never a fun time either.  If they had brought in the other woman and invited her into their home, that would definitely be a holiday buster.  I'm hoping my inlaws, when they ARE introduced to the new one, treat her the same way they treated me for 14 years!  It's only fair...

One tradition I had growing up was that my grandparents would have everybody over for dinner on Christmas Eve.  Afterwards, the g-parents would come and stay the night with my family.  The next morning we'd open presents and have a HUGE breakfast.  Then they'd leave to go to other familiy members homes for the day and we would head to the other g-parents house for a similarly huge lunch and a day of football.

In continuing that tradition, my parents always stay over on Christmas Eve.  We also like to watch Christmas Movies on Christmas Eve.  Usually, it is the Christmas Story, but we like the Santa Clause, Elf, and Chevy Chase's Christmas movie too.  We'll open presents Christmas morning and continue the big breakfast tradition.  NO HAVING TO GO TO THE INLAWS THIS YEAR!!

This year, hubby get the s that afternoon and is taking them to Key Largo for a few days with his sister and her daughter.  I know my s will enjoy it so I'm happy for them.

Good for Mema and TG- I am blessed that my in laws are SOOO far away!

We will do what we have done for a while now- church and birthday dinner Christmas Eve, open gifts here and have a big breakfast with my dad and his wife on Christmas morning and then the hubby takes the girl home while I start our ham and mac and cheese dinner!

I am so glad my In-Laws like me, that was one of the things I put in the paperwork when they turned her over to me.

One of my favorite Christmas traditions was hiding grandma's dentures on her.

She'd spend the whole day cooking a HUGE Christmas feast for the entire family, and right before dinner we'd sneak into her bedroom and hide her dentures on her.

We'd wait until she watched us finish our meals, having eaten nothing but gravy and fluff herself since she had no teeth, and when we were all done, we'd pull out her dentures from behind a pictre frame on her shelf and laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaugh and laugh.

Aaaaaaaaaaah, good times

Oh, that reminds me about what we'd do to Grandpa at Thanksgiving dinner!

Every year we'd...
