Police Reunion Rumor

Police reunion rumors reaching fever pitch

Rumors are swirling that the Police will reunite for 2007 dates in England and the United States, which would be the rock trio's first since disbanding in 1986.

Sources told Billboard.com the reports -- in the British press -- were legitimate, but they would not publicly comment until final details are nearer to completion.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the release of "Roxanne," the single that broke the Police in the United States. In a statement issued last month, A&M Records said, "It is our intention to mark the anniversary by doing something special with the band's catalog of songs. Needless to say, everyone is hopeful the band will support our plans and while early discussions have taken place, nothing has been decided."

Sources say in addition to DVD releases, A&M is planning another multi-disc collection in the vein of 1993's "Message in a Box," which featured the band's complete studio recordings and a handful of rarities.

A Police reunion has been the concert industry's dream for two decades, as it is believed the band could play stadiums internationally should it choose to reunite. But besides an impromptu set at Sting's 1992 wedding to Trudie Styler, the Police's only other post-breakup performance was in celebration of its 2003 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

And while Sting has repeatedly expressed reluctance at reuniting, drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers have kept the flame alive. This summer, Summers told Billboard he was certain the group could have continued past its 1983 commercial peak with "Synchronicity."

"The more rational approach would have been, 'OK, Sting, go make a solo record, and let's get back together in two or three years,"' he said. "I'm certain we could have done that. Of course we could have. We were definitely not in a creative dry space. We could have easily carried on, and we could probably still be there. That wasn't to be our fate. It went in another way. I regret we never paid it off with a last tour."

If they would play a place the size of the Metro in Chicago, I might pay $125.00 If they play the Eagles Ballroom, maybe up to $95.00

You know they are going to be playing all the "Hard Rock Cafe'" type places.

THE POLICE REHEARSING IN VANCOUVER: More from the breaking story of The Police reforming. Full story at: www.canada.com/theprovince Lions Gate Studios: Reunion tour rumoured for 'Roxanne' anniversary... Every little thing the Police ever did was magic to the band's fans. Yesterday morning, Rock 101 FM's Bro' Jake Show reported that the '80s rockers were rehearsing in town at North Vancouver's Lions Gate Studios, preparing for a highly-anticipated 30-year reunion tour. No one was available officially to confirm or deny the report. A receptionist would only allow that "there have been a lot of calls this morning." Rock 101 received unconfirmed reports Wednesday night that two large semis arrived at the studio and started unloading gear marked with Police logos and those of its former lead singer, Sting. The radio station reported some Sting sightings on the slopes of Whistler yesterday, too. More info and reporta at: www.rock101.com.

Story Highlights

Police drummer Stewart Copeland not impressed with show
Band made a number of errors at Vancouver gig
Ahead of schedule for "disaster gig," he says, puckishly

NEW YORK (AP) -- The crowds have been ecstatic, but Police drummer Stewart Copeland has been anything but impressed so far by the band's reunion concerts.

Copeland trashed Wednesday's concert in Vancouver, British Columbia, in a posting on his Web site the morning after. "This is ... lame. We are the mighty Police and we are totally at sea."

His recollection of events -- or, rather, band bloopers -- is both scathing and comical. For one thing, Copeland noted, he failed to strike a gong at the right time, ruining "the big pompous opening to the show."

The rock trio of Copeland, singer-bassist Sting and guitarist Andy Summers flubbed their performance of the song "Message in a Bottle," said Copeland, who didn't hear Summers' opening guitar riff. Sting then missed his cue from Copeland -- "so we are half a bar out of sync with each other. Andy is in Idaho," he wrote.

That misfortune extended into the second song, "Synchronicity II." They couldn't "get on the good foot," said Copeland, before going on to criticize Sting's footwork during the set.

"The mighty Sting momentarily looks like a petulant pansy instead of the god of rock," he wrote.

The disorder continued "for song after song." But afterward, he said, they fell "into each other's arms laughing hysterically."

"It usually takes about four or five shows in a tour before you get to the disaster gig. But we're The Police so we are a little ahead of schedule," he said.

Their next show will be Saturday in the Canadian city of Edmonton. The tour will take the Police through North and South America, Europe and Australia by the time it wraps in early 2008.cry

I think they're playing our Bonaroo festival this weekend in Manchester, TN. Must come with own cooler, tent and port-a-potty though. It's in the middle of a big field with 100,000 hippies.
