Time to Ban Banning Things

Don't get me wrong, I know that flourescent bulbs are way more efficient. Every year I help our local nature center operate what they call the "energy cycle" It utilizes the generator from an old volkswagen connected to a bicycle that is connected to a panel of capacitors that run power to outlets. Kids see how difficult it is to power a house of incadescent vs. flourescent, etc.

Here's what triggered it, for me....

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California lawmaker wants to make his state the first to ban incandescent lightbulbs as part of California's groundbreaking initiatives to reduce energy use and greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

The "How Many Legislators Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb Act" would ban incandescent lightbulbs by 2012 in favor of energy-saving compact fluorescent lightbulbs.

"Incandescent lightbulbs were first developed almost 125 years ago, and since that time they have undergone no major modifications," California Assemblyman Lloyd Levine said on Tuesday.

Yep.
Regular bulbs blow 90 percent of their energy to just heating the element. 10 percent goes to the actual "light"

The "compact" are switched around completely. 10 percent is heat, 90 percent light.

you will never be able to grab an incadescent from the socket without a rag or something. Compacts, just unscrew after turning off.

The kids that ride the bike are surprised (parents too!) They operate a t.v., radio, fan vs. blow dryer-big big difference.

They're worried about global warming, so they're banning lightbulbs?  Why not ban SUV's instead?!

I don't have a problem with it really if there is a better alternative available then fine, anything that helps towards a reduction in global warming is good but I do agree there are more serious things to ban than light bulbs that would help more.

Its 3 degrees here right now. I really would't mind a little warming of my globe today.
