I don't think there is an artist who divides people more than Yoko does. From her unconventional voice to the fact that she married John Lennon, she's never really caught a break from the mainstream, although she's had a loyal cult following for a long time.
At the tender age of 74, she releases "Yes, I'm A Witch", her first album in six years. She takes a page from the Tony Bennett/Dionne Warwick book but does things a bit hipper. She remakes selections from her extensive catalog (spanning 1969's "Cambridge 1969" to 1995's "Rising") and collaborates with a lot of today's cutting-edge producers and artists, proving that Yoko is more relevant musically today than ever. While her voice will never be conventional, it has improved with age. In "Sisters O Sisters", she actually sounds much more like Cyndi Lauper than her 1970's self. I've always liked Yoko and thought of her as a true underdog. It's a neat album to try out, it's actually getting surprisingly good reviews because a lot of these songs sound even better now.
I gotta say, her voice drives me insane. I never minded her involvement in the Beatles, I wasn't a big Beatles fan anyway.
But the songs of hers that we do have on the station are like nails on a chalkboard to me.
I actually view her in the same group as Laurie Anderson, and I think I've made it clear that Laurie Anderson makes me want to drive railroad spikes into my ears
Yet, I'm a fair guy. I'll check out her new stuff next week maybe.
Hey Anf, only two more weeks til Family Ties hits DVD!
well, I would avoid the tracks "Rising" and "Cambridge 1969" at all costs on the new cd... classic Yoko yelling, but for the most part, I think the older she gets, the more tolerable her voice sounds. I'd argue that besides her 1980's pop forays, this is the most accessable she'll ever get. The new arrangements are fun for the fans but also different enough from the originals that it could easily attract a wider audience.
Riggs, you might want to be on the look-out for Laurie Anderson's "United States Live", a live cd that is four discs long and has over 80 tracks on it including an over-20 minute version of O Superman, I'm sure you'll think you died and went to Heaven there, haha.
With Family Ties, I heard that two of the episodes have scenes deleted in it due to Paramount's greed over music rights. I know that if this happens with "At This Moment" later into the series, there will be a lot of PO'd fans. Have you seen Men In Trees on ABC? Justine Bateman recently joined the cast of that and she looks not a day older than she did as Mallory.

A) It would be HELL that I thought I was in Anf, not heaven
2) That REALLY sucks about the deleted scenes! Why wouldn't they just replace the music as opposed to deleting a couple scenes! What kills me is they're not planning on selling the set dirt cheap or anything. I thought I read $39.99 list price. You're right about "At This Moment", that is the defining song of that series besides the theme, to change or delete it would devalue the entire collection!
C) I did not see MEN IN TREES, but one of my favorite cancelled shows of the past two years was STILL STANDING (which had an AWESOME theme song performed by Will Hoge and written by Holly Knight which was never recorded to an album or single which PIZZES me off, but that's another subject) and Justine Batemen played a neighbor. She DOES look as good as ever.
You know, I know everyone always trashes reunion shows, but I don't know why. All the main players are living, I would love to see a Family Ties reunion. It would be fun to see what Alex is up to all these years later! Did Nick & Mallory last? Is skippy (or as he prefers to be called "Baby Boy Doe") doing anything with his life? Did Andrew grow up to be just like Alex?
