TV just keeps getting worse!

Winner for most unusual piece of development this pilot season goes to ABC, which has turned a series of quirky Geico commercials into an actual half-hour comedy project.

"Cavemen" will revolve around three pre-historic men who must battle prejudice as they attempt to live as normal thirtysomethings in modern Atlanta.

Project, from ABC TV Studio, is penned by Joe Lawson, an advertising copywriter who was behind the "Caveman" ads -- as well as other Geico commercials (think the ****ney-speaking Geico gecko, and the reality TV spoof "Tiny House").

Daniel Rappaport, Guymon Cassady, Will Speck and Josh Gordon are exec producers. Speck and Gordon, commercial directors who recently helmed the Will Farrell feature "Blades of Glory," are on board to also direct.

The single-camera laffer pilot is based on the Geico ads that promote the insurance company's Web site as so user-friendly that even "a caveman could do it." The spots follow cavemen in modern settings, reacting with offense to the derogatory slogan. In one, a Geico spokesman apologizes and takes the Neanderthals out to dinner.

Other blurbs include the sensitive, modern cavemen peeved at the offending slogan while encountering Geico ads in everyday life, including the airport.

The caveman commercials were created through the Richmond, Va.-based Martin Agency. Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ben Weber play the cavemen in the Geico spots; no word if they'll make the transformation to the TV project.

Few TV shows have come out of the commercial sphere; more frequently, TV characters live on in 30-second spots long after their shows are canceled (think "ALF").

But it's not without precedence: The 2002 CBS comedy "Baby Bob" revolved around a talking baby character that was first seen in a series of dot.com ads. After the Eye canceled "Baby Bob," the character returned to its commercial roots, spending time as a pitchman (pitchbaby?) for Quizno's Subs.

I get all the cable I want on VHS from my brother in law that pays for cable. I guess I am "extracting" the finest programing. (my opinion of course)
Before t.v. was entertainment, all you could watch was news.
Once again, I think all we have locally is news. (4:30-6:30pm, 9-10:30pm - I'm not sure how long the morning/lunchtime programs are)
Then, in between.... Entertainment Tonight, Judge Him/Her, Montell, Oprah. Soaps are starting to look good. Yikes!

This is why I don't pay for TV. I'll just stick with PBS, thank you...

Good grief you guys are a cynical bunch of old fogies!

It's E-N-T-E-R-T-A-I-N-M-E-N-T for crying out loud!  It's not supposed to educate your kids or solve the worlds problems

Reading all your comments I would think I was in a room full of 90 year olds!

Either brushing all of television as crap with one broad stroke or taking the holier than thou attitude that TV is somehow beneath you.

JD, EXPECIALLY YOU!  The gig is up!  I've talked to your friends with cable and found out you're all too happy to let them provide you with your entertainment so you can keep your "no TV" policy at home!

Sad, just sad.

(By the way, I'm not yelling at y'all.  Just pointing out how old y'all sound   To each his own I always say!)

I've been watching A LOT of TV lately.  It's not all bad.  I like LOTS of stuff that most folks would consider junk...but it makes me laugh.  I'm not sayin' I'd watch the Cavemen show...but those commercials crack me up.

I guess I have a little brain.  I love TV...even bad TV.  It could be all the meds I'm on though...

To be honest, I think TV has only gotten better.

It's more motion-picture like these days.  The dramas are high quality, some of the comedies are top notch.  I just think it's always been a favorite punching bag for people.  But it really has improved over the years.

Producers assume the audience is smarter, and shows like E.R. are very much based in reality right down to last term you hear them throw out.  They have consultants on set a lot of times to make sure they're keeping things real.

I mean, don't get me wrong, there's some stupid stuff too, but that's ok.  Nothing wrong with turning the brain off for 30 minutes to watch something stupid.  We need that type of down-time in our lives now more than ever.

This is an edited version of Newton Minow's speech to the National Association of Broadcasters on May 9,

(I removed the year and put it at the end of this article.  Let me know if you're surprised. - Ray)

Thank you for this opportunity to meet with you today. This is my first public address since I took over my new job. It may also come as a surprise to some of you, but I want you to know that you have my admiration and respect.

I admire your courage--but that doesn't mean I would make life any easier for you. Your license lets you use the public's airwaves as trustees for 180 million Americans. The public is your beneficiary. If you want to stay on as trustees, you must deliver a decent return to the public--not only to your stockholders. So, as a representative of the public, your health and your product are among my chief concerns.

I have confidence in your health. But not in your product. I am here to uphold and protect the public interest. What do we mean by "the public interest?" Some say the public interest is merely what interests the public. I disagree.

When television is good, nothing--not the theater, not the magazines or newspapers--nothing is better.

But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite you to sit down in front of your television set when your station goes on the air and stay there without a book, magazine, newspaper, profit and-loss sheet or rating book to distract you--and keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that you will observe a vast wasteland.

You will see a procession of game shows, violence, audience-participation shows, formula comedies about totally unbelievable families, blood and thunder, mayhem, violence, sadism, murder, western badmen, western good men, private eyes, gangsters, more violence and cartoons. And, endlessly, commercials--many screaming, cajoling and offending. And most of all, boredom. True, you will see a few things you will enjoy. But they will be very, very few. And if you think I exaggerate, try it.

The year......1961.

I knew this was a while ago from this line...

"I invite you to sit down in front of your television set when your station goes on the air "

lol.

My station hasn't been off the air in fifteen years

Sounds like the same complaints as today.  I'm a TV guy too.  I watch too much.  But if I couldn't command the remote control I would have no power in this house full of women.

I guess as my kids are at an impressionable age, I find most programs lack the moral lessons that the older shows once did and there is too much shown on tv.

Well, I can't argue that Ruby.

I view TV as adult entertainment only now other than PBS and maybe Nickelodeon and stuff.

If I had kids they wouldn't watch prime-time until they were about 14.

Thats what I miss about the 80's.  Shows like Family Ties, The Cosby Show, and others actually taught a lesson while still being entertaining.

Not so with most of whats on today.

Yeah you see my point. I do LOVE the Disney channel. Emily really loves the characters and they are people I am glad that she can watch and learn from. She wants to be Raven- Cheetah Girl or Hannah Montana- and right now that is okay with me.

The boy and older girl will watch MTV and I totally disagree with that. My son knows my stance.

I was listening to Martha Quinn on Sirius Radio last weekend and she said she would n't let her kids watch MTV today.  One of the original VJ's and she said she wants the old MTV back.  The stuff that's on there today is too much.

MTV was a huge part of my childhood, but I would die if my son watched it like I used to. They do not even come close to the entertainment value of the past show.

I miss the old Disney on Sunday nights.  That was our family night.  The Wonderful World Of Disney and we would have Chef Boyardee pizza and popcorn.

That was the best.
