All part of an accidental deletion that I thought only wiped out artists with numbers in their titles, but I guess actually stretched into the A's as well.

Aerosmith & AC/DC have been put back.

No problem.

With the new system operational now it's really fast and easy.

Really? Does that go for the stuff that was lost in the big crash last year too?

Once it's identified, if we still have it in our main collection, then yes.

There shouldnt' be that much missing from the big crash anymore though.

We only lost about 500 songs in the big crash and I know we replaced a great deal of it within a few weeks.

We're getting to the point though where now that we're over 10k songs, I don't know if we're going to keep adding more unless they're popular.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that we are no longer grabbing new listeners.  They tune in and after 15 - 20 minutes  hear nothing they recognize so they move on.  We have to figure out a way to get more maintstream while still allowing for a big variety.

If we can't do this, we won't be on the air long, because costs are going up and if we're going to be forever stuck in this 50 - 60 listner range it just makes no sense to continue.

Well that's depressing!

Yes, I ask because out of the list of 17 songs I noticed missing, you only put 2 back on. Were the others not "popular enough"?

I'm not sure LS, I'll have to go back and look at the original email you sent.

The first 2- I think were on FFR. But honestly, I could be confusing them with another station I listened to quite a bit around the same time we found FFR.

? - A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS – NIGHTMARES
? - STAFFORD, JIM - SPIDERS & SNAKES
TIM MCGRAW – RED RAGTOP
RONETTES – BE MY BABY
SHIRLEY & LEE – LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL
SILHOUETTES - GET A JOB
CAT STEVENS – FATHER & SON
TEDDY BEARS - TO KNOW HIM IS TO LOVE HIM
TANYA TUCKER – DELTA DAWN
WHO – ATHENA
WHO – EMINENCE FRONT
WHO – IT’S HARD
EDGAR WINTER GROUP - FRANKENSTEIN
YES - I'VE SEEN ALL GOOD PEOPLE

So, in regards to new music, you only want to add songs that are popular, or artists that are popular?

I haven't really decided yet LS.  I'm not sure what direction we're going to head in yet.

At this point I would say I'm just trying to stay away from deep deep album cuts that one person may enjoy for personal reasons but the rest of the listening audience may never have heard.

But how do you determine that?  I don't know.

All I DO know is that the point I made earlier is becoming more and more obvious to me because I find it happening to MYSELF!  As much as I love music, there are many days I turn on the station and the first 20 minutes are all songs that not only weren't hits, but that's I've never heard or barely heard.

Certainly there's room for that on this station.  A LOT of room for it.  But it can be a HUGE turnoff to a first time listener, so we've got to get a more balanced mix of hits and deep cuts.

Maybe it means fewer requests spaced out over a longer period of time.  Maybe it means cutting the playlist down a bit.   I'm just not sure.  I don't want to act too quickly and make a big mistake, so I'm just taking some time to consider the issue and decide which direction to go.

No matter what I do some people will be disappointed, and that's never a comfortable decision to have to make (when you know you're going to be disappointing part of your audience).

I also know a big part of the problem is me not getting on air enough.  I think new listeners need to be made aware that we're an all-request station and that they need to dig in there and help build the playlist.  I can't do that if I'm not on the air.

So much to consider, so little time.  And the RIAA threatening to end it all soon anyway

Maybe alot of what needs to happen is possibly getting rid of some of the classics. ( around the laste 50s and 60s.)

I listen to alot of them ( Ronettes, Peggy Lee, Leslie Gore, Temptations etc.) however todays music needs to get also placed in there ( the clean versions. AKON, Pussycat Dolls, Mary J Blige etc.) so that you have a wide variety of music.

We all LOVE the 80s and that is what drew most of us into the FFR in the first place. and just because you dont like a certain Song or even a certain artist ( Remember teh Kelly Clarkson  Poster?) does not mean that maybe someone else does. I agree Riggs that its hard to do this and decide what stays and what goes. But maybe you can take some of them and maybe just bring them in on the weekends or something.

Hey Thump,

Nice to see you!

With our entire catalog now being online, it's a lot easier for me to bring in a group of music for say, just the weekend.  So that's something I'll be considering.

We'll never play rap, in part because I don't own any, but also because I don't WANT to own any   Even the R&B/Hip Hop stuff, I'm willing to put some of it in, but the truth is it's not my style of music so I don't have much of it in my collection.

If we want a big audience we have two choices.

A)  Greatly reduce our playlist.  Narrow it down to a specific genre and stick with it.  So if someone tunes in expecting to here 80's, that's what they get, or if they tune in expecting to hear current hits, that's what they get.

or B)  Keep the "Jack" format, but figure out how to get the word out better.  I KNOW this format CAN work.  There are atleast three other stations I know of that have the EXACT format but broadcast to as many as 1500 people at a time.

The audience is there, it's a matter of finding it.  And realistically, that might not be possible without expensive advertising.

Of course, plan C might be thrust upon us.  A shutdown thanks to the RIAA.

If you're looking for opinions, I'd probably say I'd prefer option A or B over C.

Yeah, if I have my choice I'd go with plan C too.

I don't know why, but i have a feeling if we lose our ability to broadcast music, the JD & JEREMY ALL-TALK NETWORK won't do so well

Oops!

I didn't realize what'd I'd said!  Of course I wouldn't go with Plan C!

Hmm, or was it a Freudian slip?  Maybe subconciously I want the station to shut down?!?!

It wouldn't be a Freudian slip unless your attraction to your mother is causing you to shut the station down

Judging from the graphic I'd say it's Sparky that's trying to get you in trouble

Jeremy, personally, I think that ffr really is something pretty cool. Yes, there are times when some of the music is sleepy and sappy old stuff but, I do see quite a few "new" artist on the playlist.

Trust me on this too, I love my eighties music but, non-commercial (replacements, husker du, minutemen etc) more than commercial. (c lauper, m jackson etc)

A point well taken... what good is a massive library, if nobody listens.

As listeners, we are all pretty sporadic. (spelling?)

There is so much to listen to, see and do in each day.

FFR is good, fun... the forum makes it happen.

Thanks Squonk.

That's why we have JD, for the "non-commercial" stuff on Sunday evenings.  And as he plays things that border on commercial we've added those songs to the main playlist.

I actually prefer the commercial stuff usually, and have to tell you that my own station is often not one I would listen to.  So I think I understand why our audience has shrunk as our playlist has expanded.

The sound of the station can be completely different from day to day, which is cool, but the vast majority of music fans like what they like and don't want to be pulled around in 20 different directions.

The cool thing is we have a lot of options now with our library completely online like it is.

We'll be making some playlist changes in the near future, but NOTHING will every be completely off the table.  Our entire library of 150,000 songs is available to the DJ's at anytime, so we'll still be able to throw together a show of just about anything whenever we want to.
