Important Email Link in the fight against RIAA

Another broadcaster has found a link to the Copyright Royalty Board which actually made the decision on these fee increases.

If anyone is in one more letter writing mood, this is a GREAT place to send it.

The key being to point out why internet radio does not hurt and in fact helps sales of product.  Also you might want to mention the variety factor.

One of the sites I went to the other day included this link, so I did that at the same time as the other letters. :)

HEY MAN!

I was gonna mention that today!  YOU STOLE MY THUNDA!!!!

Just kidding, it's all good   I did find that last night though and thought it was a pretty good site.

In fact, it led to a direct link for emailing your congressman, which I put up on our home page and will push on-air today.

Woo hoo- this is an even better response!

Dear Mrs. Sisson ,

Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to the new royalty rates for online radio stations proposed recently by the Copyright Royalty Board . I appreciate hearing from you.

As you may know, the Copyright Royalty Board announced new guidelin es for I nternet radio royalties on March 5, 2007 . The guidelines set a "per play" royalty structure whereby webcasters will pay a set amount for each performance of a copyrighted song. A performance is defined as the streaming of one song t o one listener. T he guidelines also set a minimum of $500 per channel per year for both commercial and noncommercial webcasters.

These new guidelines are a complete departure from the "percentage of revenue" structu re that is currently in effect. Like you, I have concerns about the possible negative impacts this new structure could have on consumer choice and innovation. Y ou may be pleased to know that the Copyright Royalty Board has agreed to accept requests for a new hearing until April 2, which may allow the recent guidelines to be revisited.

I greatly value your thoughts and opinions as my constituent, and I assure you that I will continue to monitor this issue. Please feel free to contact me in the future about any issue important to you or your family. It is an honor to serve you and the people of South Carolina .

Sincerely,

Jim DeMint
United States Senator

the RIAA are a bunch of pricks that have almost completely destroyed the music industry. Not that I'm defending illegal downloading, but it was their obsession with overpricing cd's in the 1990's and refusing to release cd singles for one hit wonder artists and milking the consumer for all they could that led to people "stealing" music to begin with. I won't pay more than $10-11 for a cd (and it's easy to find cd's for $10 when on sale these days) unless it's a 2-disc set or something really worth the money.

I know what you're saying Anf.

All along their greed handicapped them in the rush to provide digital downloading, when they finally got around to doing it at a fair price they were beaten to the market by college kids that created a way to share their music for free.

I still support the artists I like because I do feel like if an album is worth the money, then they deserve compensation for it.

The main problem is the industry, especially in the late 90's when downloading finally hit, was so busy in promoting crappy teen pop acts with no musical merit like Britney, N'Sync (I will admit as a solo artist, Justin Timberlake has grown on me), Backstreet Boys and others, over artists that worked hard to get where they were. And they refused to release cd-singles for those artists because they wanted people to spend $15-20 on a piece of crap Britney cd that had one catchy song on it, then they got all mad because people started downloading the songs. Maybe if they had given them cheap cd-singles, people would've bought those instead of stealing the songs for free. Especially now when you see how used bins are stuffed with old N'Sync cd's that they can't give away for $1.
