Woo hoo- can I pull the switch!

Jury: Child killer should dieJurors recommended the death penalty for John Evander Couey who was found guilty last week of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and murdering Jessica Lunsford. The body of the 9-year-old girl was found weeks after her death, buried within sight of her own house.

This problem is so prevalent right now- I wish these people would reach out for help instead of acting on their impulses.

I saw this.

I'm no longer pro-death penalty, but if anyone deserves it this dirt bag does.

I have a feeling though the other prisoners will kill him long before a lethal injection does.

Oh sorry, it wasn't meant as bait

I don't know what caused it Ruby.  I was a BIG, BIG believer in the death penalty my entire life until a few years ago.  I always said that it was unthinkable to me that someone could murder someone I love and then my taxes would pay to feed, cloth and house that person for the rest of their life.

But at some point I guess I started thinking about the fact that I don't have a right to play God, no matter how much I despise a persons actions.

Even more than that.  I've always laughed at how everybody "finds God" in prison.  How convenient right?  They find God when they have absolutely nothing left?

But then again, what if they do?  How can I advocate taking away another human beings time and opportunity to make amends before it's too late?

It just seems to me it's something better left in the hands of the almighty, my only responsibility is to make sure they don't have the opportunity to hurt anyone else.

I should add that this is just a personal opinion for me. I still remember how I felt when I was pro-death penalty, so I don't dismiss anyone that still believes it's the right thing to do.

Another big issue for me is I'm pro-life, and it is a bit hypocritical to be pro-life and pro-death penalty. Granted, one is an innocent life and one is a convicted criminal. But it's still a human being deciding when another human being should be allowed to live or not.

Sorry,  you know I am nosy! I was just curious because I know you are Catholic and that the church does believe an eye for an eye. I understand about finding  God in prison, but that is what is so great about grace and salvation- if you believe Jesus died for us and our sins, then they will be forgiven and enter into Heaven. I guess that is why I am still for it.

Getting too religious and personal? I, too, respect what anyone thinks. There is no right answer and until I actually have this experience first hand, I could be persuaded either way.

Nah, this isn't too personal or religious. I have no problem talking about it.

I learned a long time ago that I don't have all the answers, so I'm never opposed to talking about something like this with someone as long as it's a civil discussion.

Now, when I was say, 25, even 30, my view was the right view and everyone else just didn't know what they were talking about

Boy, you really get THAT kicked out of you with some time

I could not agree MORE! As I get older I want to hear your side too- maybe I am wrong! Heck I probably am! And that's okay!

I guess when you actually have to deal with a criminal in your life it opens up your mind. I never thought much of the death penalty until my husbands grandmother was killed by her own grandson.
He had a history, hadn't even been out that long. We saw him at the reunion in August and then he killed her in October. I believe if we had the death penalty in the state that the judge would of went for it. He gave him the best sentence he could with a personal recommendation that he never be let out to society again. He was going to give him life but he said that with the way the system works he would most likely be let out due to overcrowding or good behavior. The system sucks. It doesn't work and we just end up with more problems when they are let out. I don't believe that everyone should die but there are the most serious crimes and the circumstances involved. Was it cold blooded, an accident...? I know that it is playing God again, but that is just how I feel.
On a side note, I am so sick of hearing about the parents that kill there own kids! Why did you even bother having them? or have them and give them up for adoption. I am off my soap box now.

The death penalty is something I'm really torn on. There's issues like this where I say the scumbag should totally get it.

I guess what gets me, is what if we've got the wrong guy? What if we're putting an innocent man to death? And it has happened before.

I've always thought that something like that would change my mind back Woo. I can't imagine how I'd react to a family member being murdered.

My hope is that my faith would give me strength so that even in a horrible time like that I could have compassion in my heart and not seek vengence, but my fear is I'd kill the suspect myself.

Especially in the below mentioned case. I do not know how I could keep myself or my hubby from killing a man if he did those things to little E!

I dont think its always the best case...most murderers need help...not to die. They never get the help they need and then die I believe that people go on after death...are they still sick when they move on? but WHAT IF they come back as someone else and do it again??? Thats why its hard because I know if it were my family, I would want them to die.
