Will you / Have you - changed to flourescent lighting?

I bought my first flourescent light bulbs a few years ago and they're still ticking.  I didn't replace all my lights because these were a bit too expensive for my taste.

But I like the light they give off, and the only real negative is a 3 or 4 second delay in the light going on after you turn it on, which is obviously no big deal.

Reading the story below I've been inspired to go to Sam's Club tomorrow and buy enough bulbs to replace my entire house worth (about 30 bulbs).  Sam's Club sells 8 packs for only $20.00 I believe.

Is America ready to change its light bulbs?

Coalition of business, energy groups advises switch for energy efficiency

EDISON, N.J. - It's lit our way for 128 years, but an alliance of businesses, energy experts and environmentalists on Wednesday said it's time to dim old Tom Edison's incandescent light bulb and switch by 2016 to a brighter future — to energy efficient fluorescents, halogens and LEDs.

"They use only a quarter of the energy compared to an incandescent, are
much cooler, last much longer, and most importantly, result in a lot less emissions coming from our power plants," says Noah Horowitz with the National Resources Defense Council.

Industry figures show replacing a 75-watt incandescent with one 20-watt fluorescent will save $55 in electricity over the life of the bulb.

It's why Brian Barton in Los Angeles changed all 118 bulbs in his house.

"I'm saving $150 a month," he says.

But for most fluorescents are still too expensive. You can buy four old-fashioned bulbs for 96 cents or one fluorescent for $5.97.

I plan on buying them when I need new light bulbs. So far I do not have any that are burnt out!

I started switching about 2 years ago, and I haven't had one burn out yet. And I've got electric bills that people would die for!

I really like them.  Use to buy the cheap bulbs and had to replace a month later.  Haven't had to replace one in awhile.  Also I have kids that think every light should be on no matter what time of day or if you are in that room or not.  Man, I sound like my mother.

Excuse me if I sound stupid, but do these types of bulbs still give off that bright, glaring light that I'm used to seeing in flourescent tube lighting?  I really have that kind of light.....way too harsh.  I'm asking because I don't know anyone that uses these yet.  I haven't tried them either.

No, these arent that type of harsh office lighting. I think it looks like pretty normal lighting, maybe slightly less yellow. Not the blue tones I normally associate with fluorescent lights.

I haven't verified this yet, but I heard that the little flourescent bulbs have mercury in them and if we are going to be environmentally conscious, the bulbs will have to be disposed of as hazardous waste when they are done. You know that the majority of people will just throw them in the trash and the mercury will end up in the landfills.

So, are we really helping anything?

Hmmm, I'm going today to pick them up, so I'll see if the package says anything about that. It's the first I heard of it.

Certainly wouldn't surprise me though. Seems like anytime we do something good a little bad is tied to it.

Thanks Mz.......that's what's kept me from buying one.....I didn't want to try one in case they were like that.

Ok,

I'm off to Sam's to buy my lightbulbs.  I'll let you all know if the packaging mentions anything 'bout Mercury and special disposal needs.

While I'm there, anyone need anything?

Case O' TP?  12 pack of laundry detergent?  62" Flat Panel Plasma HD TV?

How 'bout a Sam's Club pizza?  They're delicious ya know!?!?!

In that case, make it a pizza.

Got my bulbs!

I bought 12 100 watt comparible bulbs and 16 60 watt comparible bulbs.

Sam's Club prices are REALLY GOOD on these!

$12.67 for six 100 watt bulbs
$14.79 for eight 60 watt bulbs

At that price it's a no-brainer to switch!

So far I don't see anything about Mercury, but I'm lookin'...

Spoke too soon. Warning label on the back says "Lamp contains mercury, dispose of properly"

Oh Web, I didn't forget you!

I picked up a Buffalo Chicken Pizza! Looks really good! Chunks of seasoned grilled chicken on top of a white-sauce with four cheeses.

Enjoy!

Have you had their pizza's? They're really good.

Although if you have them make it it's even better.

I used to go there for lunch because their pizza was awesome, but when I bought one to make at home it just wasn't the same. Still good, but not as good as at the store.

I asked them about it and they said they use a different crust when they make the pizza for you there.

Either way though, you can't go wrong, it's as good a take n' bake pizza as your gonna find.

Thanks, JR!

I've been occasionally picking up a Subway pizza. They are pretty good . . . I don't think they are "only 6 grams of fat" but they are pretty tasty for as quick as they are.

Well, ours here does, anyway.

I usually get pepperoni and add sausage and some black olives. I think they taste very similar to a Pizza Hut "Personal Pan" but I think they are somwhat bigger.

People often get put off by energy saving bulbs because when you switch on they seem much darker /duller....persevere and after about 5 mins they will have warmed up nicely and brightened up considerably.

The 1st one I had was bought by my ex man in  1991 - we had just started going out...it moved wherever we moved to...and did not die until 2003...the year we seperated funnily enough...never made that connection till now........

This is very true Pip.

And it doesn't even take five minutes. These ones I bought seem to hit full brightness afer about a minute and they give a VERY nice white light.

I'm just starting the process of switching over. My house seems to eat lightbulbs, so I don't imagine it will take long for me to get there. So far I'm pretty pleased.
