Another retailer to avoid- Circuit City

I wonder if they offered people to keep their jobs at a lower rate. Anyway- horrible practice!

Circuit City's plan to fire 3,400 will have ripple effects

Circuit City Stores' (CC) decision to lay off 3,400 employees in order to hire lower-paid replacements is raising questions about the impact of severe cost-cutting on employee morale.

The consumer electronics retailer announced Wednesday that it was immediately firing store associates "who were paid well above the market-based salary range for their role." New workers will be paid less, although Circuit City did not reveal the pay of the workers.

Laying off workers who earn higher pay raises the risk of deflating the morale of employees who are left behind, says Penelope Trunk, author of Brazen Careerist: The New Rules for Success.

"People left behind are probably thinking they don't have a future there," Trunk says.

Yikes!

That sets a pretty ugly precedent! "As soon as I get to a higher level of pay I become a liability and will be let go".

I think that's always been to a certain degree an unspoken truth in retail. I was just discussing this with someone last weekend. People don't work for a company for 50 years anymore, and the company prefers it that way, expecially in the retail industry.

Why pay a floor person $12 an hour because they've been there for 15 years when you can pat someone $7 to do the same job. Sure they're less knowledgable, but they'll get the basics of the job done.

That's why when you walk into a Circuit City and ask the guy in the computer department if the soundcard you're thinking of buying will meet the needs of what you're trying to do he says "uuuuuuuuh, I dont' know dude, it's only my sixth week here".

I used to love Circuit City, but I think since Best Buy opened in the area about six years ago, it's totally taken CC's place. Best Buy is a place I'll go to at least once a week, it's got so much to offer

Same here.

Circuit City is across the street from Best Buy. I find no reason to hit Circuit City except on the rare occassion I can't find what I'm looking for at Best Buy.

The sad thing is, I used to go to the other side of the street all the time. Circuit City had fewer customers and a more comfortable setup and environment to shop in. But they had an annoying habit of not stocking new CD's and DVD's before the store opened on Tuesday, sometimes not getting to them until Wednesday!

I can't imagine how any manager could accept this. Everyone knows the importance of first day sales. After about six months of not being able to find everything I wanted on Tuesday mornings I stopped using them at all.

It just made more sense to turn left instead of right and KNOW I'd walk away with all the new releases I was looking for.

here here,  the clerks at the Circuit City by me usually are oblivious to what's in the ad.   I have had them go to the back before to fetch me items advertised in the paper, because they were too lazy to put them out on the shelf to begin with.

OH!

Atleast you've had THAT level of service.

I've actually had a flunky tell me "everything we have is on the floor". Only to have a manager pull something from the back for me ten minutes later when I complained.

sometime these dummies (by that I mean the lazy arrogant self-important hate to be helping you ones) in retail make mistakes in your favor. I saw a bookcase in an ad once, went to the store (office max) and the wrong book case (nicer one) was in the spot the for sale one was in. I knew it wasn't the right one, and explained that to this diva in a smock that took 20 minutes to find.

there was a sign saying "we may not be out! ask an associate to check the storeroom!" I did to the diva in a smock. So this diva in a smock manually rings up the more expensive one at the sale price so she don't got to go in back. I walked out with an $68 mahogony wood bookcase for $24. at least she didn't break a nail....smile

I think there's a common misconception out there that anyone can do retail. But many times, I will pick one store over another just for their customer service.
