I swear, Key West only has 3 crimes: public intox, theft, and drug busts. (I imagine it's pretty easy to smuggle drugs into Key West.) But, particularly with the drug busts, these people are idiots! I read the crime reports every so often just for entertainment purposes. You wouldn't believe how many people get stopped by police for riding their bike in the street (or something minor like that) and take off running because they've got drugs on them. Here's some highlights from the past week:
No joke, man asks for pre-arrest toke
KEY WEST Before police arrested a suspected drug dealer last week, the man asked detectives if he could "hit a rock" before they hauled him off to jail, reports say.
Carlos Orozco, 45, who lives in a Newton Street apartment, was charged with four counts, possession of: crack cocaine, cocaine with intent to sell, a controlled substance, and less than 20 grams of marijuana.
Key West police found 8.5 grams of cocaine in individually wrapped baggies, 1.4 grams of crack cocaine, 6.4 grams of marijuana, 5.1 grams of Suboxone prescription pills, more than $1,000 in cash, and several drug ledgers listing the names and amounts of money owed to Orozco, reports say.
Detectives went to Orozco's apartment to investigate a Crime Stoppers anonymous tip about suspected drug use and sales, reports say. As they approached, all four smelled marijuana, reports say.
Orozco initially declined to let the detectives in, but said they could search him before he went to get his identification, which was in his scooter, reports say. The search turned up a clear baggy of cocaine in his front pocket, prompting a search of the apartment, reports say. A background check also showed an outstanding warrant for Orozco's arrest for violating his probation.
Orozco asked detectives if he could "take a blast" before he went to jail, reports say. When asked what he meant, Orozco said, "Not a snort; I want to hit a rock," reports say.

Hey buddy, that sure is a nice television
CITIZEN STAFF
STOCK ISLAND Imagine going into a pawn shop, running into a friend, and commenting on how the television he's pawning looked just like yours. A Rockland Key man did just that and then returned to his home to find that he was missing two televisions, a DVD player, a Sony Playstation and several games.
The man then called his friends to confront Brian Brenneman, 43, whom he'd allegedly seen at the pawn shop earlier with his missing merchandise. The two friends reportedly found a car parked in front of Brenneman's trailer with the man's television and a DVD player inside. They retrieved the items and returned them to the man, who then called police.
Detectives said Brenneman had pawned stolen items at the pawn shop as well as a number of power tools, which had been stolen from a job site at Bay Point where Brenneman was formerly employed.
Warrants were issued for Brenneman for three counts of fraud for giving false ownership information and two counts of dealing in stolen property, according to police reports.
Officers found him Thursday on Second Street getting out of a gray car, which was reported stolen from Key West, reports state.
Brenneman was arrested and charged with outstanding warrants and grand theft auto before being taken to the Monroe County jail.

(I love the quote on this one, I'm going to have to start using the phrase "punk behind"...)
He probably didn't go to the peace-education class
KEY WEST A Stock Island man apparently thought slapping his girlfriend in the head and punching an off-duty police officer was the best way to handle a situation that unfolded in the 200 block of Simonton Street early Sunday morning.
Police arrested Boyd Stehly, 28, after witnesses said they saw him slap his 22-year-old girlfriend three or four times in the head. When one of the witnesses came forward, Stehly allegedly ran toward him "menacingly," but was told to stop by an off-duty officer, according to police.
"You want some, too?" Stehly reportedly asked the officer before allegedly punching him in the face.
When Stehly learned he had hit an off-duty officer, he reportedly threatened to kill him when he got out of jail, said he would beat his "punk [behind]," the report said.
Stehly faces charges of domestic battery, resisting arrest with and without violence and battery on a law enforcement officer.
