Why is it in the National League Central there are 6 teams fighting for first place in that division? And in the American League West there are only 4 teams in that division, I think you should take out one team out of the NL Central, (pick straws or something) and put them in the American League West.... just a thought.
Even though the cities are not quite "West", it would make the divisions more even.
it's not fair that there's a six team division. Maybe one of them needs to go to the AL and send an AL team west if one of them is more "west" in geogrophy.
I have thought for the past ten years, due to the inequity in baseball, the divisions should be realigned between big market clubs, medium market and little market.
Let Boston, NY, Arizona, Houston and Chicago slug it out in the money division, and let the Brewers, Royals, Pirates, etc. have a real chance every year in the poor mans division.
If the players union won't agree to a reasonable salary cap (say, $120 million) and the owners won't do REAL profit sharing, then give the small market teams a fighting chance that way.
Your idea is a good one Riggs, but what is the ultimate prize, the World Series Trophy? If so, how far does that get the "poor man's division" really get?? Are there two trophies at the end? Let's face it, there really should be a salary cap, and that would end all the rivalries, and hatred towards the Steinbrenners of the world, and NYYs
I figured the World Series would be a David vs. Goliath battle.
I think it would be fun, even as a small market team it would be cool to have it come down to that!
But I'm sure big market teams would get p.o.'d if after a year of spending $200 million they were beat by a team with a $50 million dollar payroll that was on a streak.
It is beyond me why we can't push a salary cap through. Players seem to think they have some God-given right to X amount of the profits Major League Baseball makes. That's not how business works!
If we had a salary cap of $120 million teams like the Brewers still wouldn't reach it, BUT the Yanks, Sox, etc. would HAVE to pay less to their players and more players would be available to small market clubs at reasonable prices.
They have started to turn it around a little bit. The Brewers got 24 million in profit sharing for this season.
But the sad reality for teams like Milwaukee is that we have about a three year window to win right now. Then these young guys will be free agents and we won't be able to afford to keep more than one, maybe two of them.
