Last weekend I watch a history channel special on Columbine. They had advertised this new documentary for weeks and it aired a couple times over a few days.
While it was tastefully done, it still struck me how even without trying they really do sensationalize the story, just like the news media does as it occurs (with the ominous music, the flashy graphics and the sensational titles like "Horror at Virginia Tech" etc.).
The movie talked about how it was the worst school shooting in US history, showed step by step how Dylan & Eric went about killing people, room to room, complete with slow-motion, special lenses, off-color images, to make it all more dramatic.
As I watched this movie I thought to myself that somewhere out there, someone saw this as a training video. Someone learned what was done right by the Columbine killers and what they did wrong.
This shooting sounds like it was executed with a plan. The killer chained doors to keep his victims from getting out.
Once these sickos decide their life doesn't matter, and then that they want to go out in a blaze of what they consider glory, I truly beleive they then want to be "the worst of all time"
I have no doubts in my mind that this kid went into that school, ready to kill, and wanting history to remember this attack as the worst ever.
The next one will want to do the same thing.
I don't know what the answers are, but I do beleive we just keep making it worse. I know we have to closely watch and report this news. But I think we're caught in an ugly cycle in which we just feed these losers appetite for notariaty.
They have an "I'll show them all" attitude. And in the end they do.
My 1982 Milwaukee Brewers Documentary DVD just arrived in the mail. I'm going to turn off the news, fire up the DVD player and slip back to a better time for a bit
