Worse than Columbine

Last weekend I watch a history channel special on Columbine.  They had advertised this new documentary for weeks and it aired a couple times over a few days.

While it was tastefully done, it still struck me how even without trying they really do sensationalize the story, just like the news media does as it occurs (with the ominous music, the flashy graphics and the sensational titles like "Horror at Virginia Tech" etc.).

The movie talked about how it was the worst school shooting in US history, showed step by step how Dylan & Eric went about killing people, room to room, complete with slow-motion, special lenses, off-color images, to make it all more dramatic.

As I watched this movie I thought to myself that somewhere out there, someone saw this as a training video.  Someone learned what was done right by the Columbine killers and what they did wrong.

This shooting sounds like it was executed with a plan.  The killer chained doors to keep his victims from getting out.

Once these sickos decide their life doesn't matter, and then that they want to go out in a blaze of what they consider glory, I truly beleive they then want to be "the worst of all time"

I have no doubts in my mind that this kid went into that school, ready to kill, and wanting history to remember this attack as the worst ever.

The next one will want to do the same thing.

I don't know what the answers are, but I do beleive we just keep making it worse.  I know we have to closely watch and report this news.  But I think we're caught in an ugly cycle in which we just feed these losers appetite for notariaty.

They have an "I'll show them all" attitude.  And in the end they do.

My 1982 Milwaukee Brewers Documentary DVD just arrived in the mail.  I'm going to turn off the news, fire up the DVD player and slip back to a better time for a bit

I watched something awhile back that sounds like the special you watched. I did not see the whole thing because it was on late. But I do remember it going thru all the rooms. I remember being outraged at the lack of police help! They could of been in there so much sooner.

But yes at the same time I am watching this wanting to know what happened because I do not want to just shove unpleasantries to the back and forget those that lost their lives, I am will aware that someone is using this as their training video. Just so sad!cry

I do not have any answers either. This world is not the world we grew up in and it is only getting worse.

I feel sorrow for those that lost loved ones in todays tragedy. I hope that more lives are not destroyed in the aftermath of this incident, like was the case in columbine. I hope that those that survived are greatfull for their lives as I am on a day such as this. Hopefully this incident will fade into history rather than be a glaring highlight.

My thoughts are with the families that lost someone today.

You're right JR....some sicko will use this documentary as a "training" type thing.  I personally hope that all school districts take a good look around at what's happening in this country with school shootings and will decide today is the day to get metal detectors at their doors!!  The high school my daughter attends has had metal detectors for two years now, and I feel a whole lot better about her being in a school that does than I do with the fact that my youngest daughter's school says "there's no need for metal detectors, we haven't had any problems yet".  "Yet" being the operative word here....what are they waiting for??   Sad as it is, it will probably take a shooting at her school before they take action that could have prevented one.

People say having kids go through a metal detector is a violation of their privacy.  I say not having kids go through a metal detector is a violation of their safety.  I'd rather have them go through a detector....at least I know there are no weapons in school while my daughter's there.
