Poll: I had no idea gay men couldn't give blood

Did you??

FDA says gay men still cant donate blood
FDA wants to prevent HIV spread; Red Cross, others say its unwarranted
The Associated Press
Updated: 4:38 p.m. ET May 23, 2007

WASHINGTON - Gay men remain banned for life from donating blood, the government said Wednesday, leaving in place for now a 1983 prohibition meant to prevent the spread of HIV through transfusions.

The Food and Drug Administration reiterated its long-standing policy on its Web site Wednesday, more than a year after the Red Cross and two other blood groups criticized the policy as medically and scientifically unwarranted.

I am disappointed, I must confess, said Dr. Celso Bianco, executive vice president of Americas Blood Centers, whose members provide nearly half the nations blood supply.

Before giving blood, all men are asked if they have had sex, even once, with another man since 1977. Those who say they have are permanently banned from donating. The FDA said those men are at increased risk of infection by HIV that can be transmitted to others by blood transfusion.

New, improved HIV tests
In March 2006, the Red Cross, the international blood association AABB and Americas Blood Centers proposed replacing the lifetime ban with a one-year deferral following male-to-male sexual contact. New and improved tests, which can detect HIV-positive donors within just 10 to 21 days of infection, make the lifetime ban unnecessary, the blood groups told the FDA.

In a document posted Wednesday, the FDA said it would change its policy if given data that show doing so wouldnt pose a significant and preventable risk to blood recipients.

It is a way of saying, Whatever was presented to us was not sufficient to make us change our minds, Bianco said.

The FDA said HIV tests currently in use are highly accurate, but still cannot detect the virus 100 percent of the time. The estimated HIV risk from a unit of blood is currently about one per 2 million in the United States, according to the agency.

Critics of the exclusionary policy said it bars potential healthy donors, despite the increasing need for donated blood, and discriminates against gays. The FDA recognized the policy defers many healthy donors but rejected the suggestion its discriminatory.

Anyone whos used intravenous drugs or been paid for sex also is permanently barred from donating blood.

RE: Poll: I had no idea gay men couldn't give

WHen you give , there's a VERY LONG, VERY thorough questionnaire you have to fill out. They don't accept from anyone who's slept with a gay man, male or female. Lots of - - questions, - - - questions, travel questions. Last time I tried to give, I was rejected because I had been to Chitzen Itza (sp?).

Just wonderin, how many of you guys donate? I've given quite a bit over the years. It's easy for me though, good veins, goes quick for me. I especially do it when the mobile comes by the office. That's one hour out of the office with a Little Debbie Oatmeal Pie and a Diet Coke waiting for me as my reward!! Sometimes they even have a free T-shirt, and always the "Kiss me, I gave " sticker. Can't beat all of those bribes!!

I tried so hard to give blood, but eventually gave up. It makes me so sick that I usually just have to go home and sleep. I can't drive myself home afterwards, and have passed out. I gave 5 times before I finally conceded.

I stopped donating for awhile because they treated me like a leper on more than one occasion. Normally I would give at the blood drive at work. However, they freaked when they learned I had travelled in Mexico. Apparently, in the Yucatan, there are quite a few red zones for Malaria contagions. My choice of adventure activities took me through quite a few of them! {{lol}} When you travel through one of those zones, you can't donate for 1 year! They told me to come back next year, and I politely explained too them that by then I planned to travel through Mexico's red zones again.

I had no idea a gay man couldn't give blood.

Now that I know I can't say I'm surprised, I can certainly see the logic behind it, particularly in today lawsuit happy environment where someone contracting aids would certainly sue (and in this case rightfully so) if they did so because of a blood transfusion.

However, this raises a couple of questions for me, one of them is semi-frightening.

1)  Is this still necesarry with our modern ability to TEST blood for anything undesirable in it?

2)  If they don't test the blood, perhaps because of the huge volume they go through and the associated expense, does this mean they're going on the honor system from the questionaires?

I've only given blood once, when I was a supervisor and our work had a blood drive.  I HATE needles and only did it because I felt I had to set an example, but I've never gone on my own to give blood.

I have never given blood, but Kaisha did when she was 18 and the blood-mobile came to her high school. Now she is inundated with postcards wanting her to keep giving. She must get a postcard a week, telling her where all the blood drives are going to be.

As far as the questioniere part of the donation. I have a problem with some of those questions. And do they truly weed out all the potential "bad" blood doners??blankstare
