That's a good one.  I have my grandmother's recipe for French Meatpie and I'll treasure that and give it to Kaisha when I get older.  It's like her secret recipe

O.K.

my most prized possesions are my 2 kids, I have some things that are irreplacable, but I don't know how I would be able to go on if my kids die.
I have rarely been able to keep "things", no matter how much they mean to me, something gets in the way of me keeping them. No matter how I treat my children, or they treat me, we are family, and that said, it doesn't matter if feelings get hurt on occasion. The other prized possesion, is my refreshed outlook on life, I have always strived to try not to see life in a negative way, but now I have realized the effect when I actively remind myself of the impact of even slightly negative views.

So there it is......

my 2 prized possesions.....

the first prized possesion can be seen on myspace.....

the other can be seen in many of the things I post...

LOL!!!!

Have a good day... :)

Another thing I have is a quilt made by my other (still living) grandmother. It is a jean quilt that is huge and warm. I've had it about 15 years. It is covered with things that she cut out that are representative of things that have happened in my life up to that point. It has things on it like tools, football, high school and college graduation, my wife's name, etc. on it. That could never be replaced. I could probably get a picture of that if you wanted to see it. :)

Its funny how things mean different things to us and how we treat them differently. My grandmother made my brother and I each one of those quilts. Mine is in our bedroom closet and neatly folded. We get it down and use it on really cold winter nights because it is incredibly warm and heavy. The last time I saw my brother's quilt, it was behind the seat of his old, dirty, greasy farm pickup. They threw it back there so they would have something warm to wrap up in at ball games, etc. Does mine mean more to me than his does to him? I don't know.

My sister horrifies me with acts like this too! laughing.gif
She once ripped up her teen-years diary, and threw out the pages. I was mortified! Like MzHartz, I have all of my writings, and have been keeping a journal since 8th grade. It takes up 1/2 a room now, but it a wonderful source of history (my history, that is.) It is the one thing I'd miss the most - even beating out my photos, if you guys can imagine that!

I would love to see a picture of this quilt! Would you post one?

I have several posessions that are meaningful but I guess I to have something that was given to me when my grandfather passed away in 1996. My grandparents had a Huge hanging rain lamp in the living room. it had a statue of a woman and when it heated up then oil would drip down the strings and make it look like rain. It was one of my favorite things. When my grandfather passed I was given it by my grandmother and I now have it in my home. It needs to be cleaned so it has not been used in a while

That sounds interesting. I don't believe I've ever heard of that type of thing - a rain lamp... confused.gif

Forgive my ignorance, but I don't know exactly what a Gohonzon is. Would you provide an explanation? And is this picture of yours?

Okay, I told you I would do this assignment.  I have a stuffed dog that I sleep with nightly.  It was the last "material" thing my X husband gave to me before we split up after 11 years of marriage.  He gave it to me for Valentine's Day in 2001.  My mother had shattered her ankle in a fall, so I went to stay at her house to aid in her needs.  My mother lives alone and is also divorced.

My husband at the time was living in our condo with Kaisha, making sure she got up for school every day and had lunch or lunch money.  He was there for Kaisha since I couldn't be there then.  The one thing I do regret about our break up is that he was always there for Kaisha.  And he was a great father.

In August of 2001, we split up, I found out that during the time of my staying w/ my mother while she had the broken ankle, he had an affair w/ a younger, coworker whom he worked with.

I was devistated, but it was a deal breaker in my eyes, and even after 9-11, when he and I talked about getting back together, I could not take him back.  I thought that every time he went to work, he'd see her, and any feelings he had for this woman would always be in front of him.  So I filed for divorce.

Anyway, the dog, my stupid, stuffed dog.  It was what I slept with when I lived w/ my mother during her injury, and when I returned home, I continued to sleep with it, even when I was there w/ my "Husband" at the time.  I had gotten used to it next to me.  His gift for Valentine's day for me, ended up sharing a bed with us.  But when all the **** hit the fan, and I found out of the affair the dog still slept with me.

Now, after 6 years + this dog still sleeps by my side every night.  And my boyfriend had gotten used to it.  If I have to work late at night, and I come home long after my boyfriend is in bed, the dog is usually on the floor, on my side of the bed.  My boyfriend has threatened to throw it away when I am not home, but he knows how much I like having it in my bed next to me.

As far as the story behind this dog, my boyfriend really doesn't know why I have it or why I sleep with it every night, so it's our little secret.

And or course there is just a picture of Rex because he is also special to me, and he is definately a prized possession in my book..... thanks for letting me share this.  How well did I do LS???smile

clap.gif You absolutely get an "A" Darlene! And you're a girl after my own heart. I've always slept with stuffed animals, and my husband had to get used to that also. Your little dog is very cute.

I'm sorry to hear about the infidelity story - I can't imagine how heartbreaking that would be. Like Ruby, I don't know that I'd be able to get past it either. Like "Forgive" by Rebecca Lynn Howard - I guess one never knows until they are in that situation. I'm glad you didn't kick the doggie to the curb though, since he was an innocent in the whole thing. Oh, and the real one's quite cute too! smile.gif

Thank you for sharing!

OK, this is really fun, so here's another.

As I"m sure you can imagine, our home is much like a mini-rock & roll museum, and this is one of my favorite "pieces", which hangs upstairs in the hallway. I took this picture outside in the sunlight so I didn't have to mess with a flash reflection problem. It actually isn't at all faded, as it seems here.

My husband found the poster at a record convention. It was only $8! And it is by far my favorite Roger album cover. (Can't imagine whybiggrin.gif) But no seriously, it is also artistic, and my favorite Graham Hughes cover to boot, so I had to get it.

When we went backstage in 2000, I had John Entwistle sign his "Too Late the Hero" album, and Roger sign this poster. I told him I was going to frame it, so asked him not to put my name or a date on it, and to do a nice job. biggrin.gif

He did take his time with it, and after doing the swirly thing, I looked at him with a confused face, and he said "That's the microphone." OOHHHHHHHH!!!! Duh! (Well, come on - I was in the presence of Roger Daltrey! laughing.gif)

God, I love him... floating.gif

I don't recall what thread I was talking about it in, but this seems like a good one to post it in.

A while ago I was talking about my favorite bear that survived for about 10 years or so before my Grandpa broke my heart and threw him out because he was too beat up.

We had covered him with bandages anytime a tear occured, and if I'm not mistaken he lost an eye and even had a burn mark (no idea how that happened).

I was looking through some old pictures and found one with him in it clap.gif

It is my understanding that a Gohonzon is a sacred relic in Nichiren Buddhism that is chanted to...it represents looking into the sacredness and miracle of one's own life within the universe, or rather, within the idea of reality at all. And when chanting, one is seeking enlightenment; to awaken within oneself one's Buddha nature. Chanting can be a calling forth the blessings of all Buddhists who have reached nirvana, but the real magic of it might lie in simply taking the time to calm the mind and focus on the innate wisdom that resides within each of us, once all the garbage that clouds one's consciousness is set aside.

Its said that a beautiful lotus flower needs mud to grow in. Its like that for being the best people we can be. If you feel stuck in the mud of life, chanting stirs it up a bit, breaks away the clumps of mud, helps fertilize the soil so that the good can thrive. smile

OH MY GOD JD You have NO idea how close you hit it!

That COULD have been Russell Helminski.

Yes Ladystrange, that was a real kid.  He was a very heavyset kid in kindergarden.

I will always remember arguing with him in kindergarden one day.  He and I were playing with a wooden train set that included one of those guards that block traffic while the train passes.

I lived less than a block from the train tracks, so I tried to explain to him that the gaurd went down to stop cars from passing.  But he insisted it stopped the train so the cars could go by.

He got so angry he sat on the train set and broke it hmm.gif

Aw!  It astounds me how grown-ups didn't realize the way this would affect someone.  Here you are - 30something & still lamenting the loss of your bear.  no.gif

My mom tells this great story - When my sister was little, she had an eskimo doll that was a promotion of eskimo pie ice cream sandwiches.  (Something like once you collected so many box tops, you could send them in along with a couple of bucks and they'd mail you one) and my sister loved this thing, and for some reason, his name was "Marky."  Well, Marky became really tattered and filthy, but of course my mom couldn't throw him out, or my sister would go ballistic.  So she saved up and ordered another.  That day she proudly told my sister that she'd given Marky a bath, and my sister was thrilled with how great he cleaned up!  Apparently, my sister unknowingly went through quite a few "Markys".  smile.gif  I don't know that I've ever seen a picture of her with one of the Markys, and I wasn't around yet to remember him myself...

Anyhow, I'm glad you have a picture of your bear, Riggs.  I would be so sad it I didn't have Melinda anymore.

I am guessing off of the internet...I could be wrong tho!

I'm pretty sure that the text down the middle translates as Nam Myo Renge Ko which is something like "Devotion to The Mystic Law of Cause and Effect". The rest of the text is the signature of the Buddha who wrote it and some other words or phrases from the Lotus Sutra...

I hope G Gal sees this, she'd be the one really in the know.smile

Here's the quilt I mentioned. This was made by my still living grandmother. It is made of recycled denim from jeans. It is heavy and really warm. There are 289 blocks in this quilt. She's made six of these quilts, my brother and I, and her four great grand kids.

Here it is spread out on the bed:

And a close up of a few of the blocks:

I'm sure that when my grandmother is gone, it will mean even more to me.

They really can traumatize you by getting rid of that stuff right?  That bear was my safety blanket.  Anytime I was at grandmas (which was a LOT) he was with me the whole time.

He even went on road trips with us.  Which reminds me, you wanna talk about a traumatic event!

I remember my grandparents and my parents and I were on a road trip.  I must have been 5 or 6 (because my Grandpa died when I was 7 or 8 I think) and we stopped at some roadside diner.  On the way in we had to be careful because the glass door had been shattered and they had a note on it not to touch the glass.

We got a booth and ordered food, but I didn't want to eat all of the food on my plate (which was often the case when I was a kid) and my grandpa was giving me a hard time (which he often did.  He was a joker, but he made me cry sometimes by going too far).

He told me if I didn't finish he was going to call the police on me.

About ten minutes laters two uniform police officers show up and sit in the booth right next to us.  It was pure coincidence but I flipped out, I started crying and thought I was going to jail.  We all got up and left, but I forgot about the door (probably because I was so upset) and pushed the glass to open it and went right through.

I remember being in the bathroom with my Mom while she was cleaning up the blood and picking out glass bits from my arms hmm.gif

My bear was with us that trip, but he was in the car.  Maybe if he'd been with me it wouldn't have gone so bad hmm.gif

Hey LS, I'm glad to answer any questions you might have to satisfy your curiosity...just let me know! The pic is from the internet, although all Gohonzons look pretty much the same as what you see in the image I published. JD's explanation is very accurate - well done! Nichiren buddhism is a form of Mahayana Buddhism, which Ruby's relion quiz covers very nicely in summation. The short and sweet - we don't pray to a deity because we don't have a deity...there's a mystic force that connects all things that is represented in the Gohonzon.

If you have more curiosity about what the Sanskrit symbols mean, I've got some links for you to explore.

This link explains what the different columns of characters translate to and gives a basic meaning: http://www.sgi-usa.org/buddhism/library/Nichiren/Gohonzon/meaning.htm

This link explains a deeper level of the religious philosophies implied in the practice and its artifacts: http://www.sgi-usa.org/buddhism/introtobuddhism.html

There's a lot of information but it is easy to sift through for the information you want. I hope this helps explain! smile

A close up of the big center square:

And a close up of a few of the blocks:

I'm sure that when my grandmother is gone, it will mean even more to me.

Fantastic! Thanks for the photos.

Aw, yes maybe he would've gotten the glass in him instead. (Less blood that way.)
