$90 gets me NUTHIN!

I was at the food store before I got in the studio today.

$90 buys four lousy bags of food and really, not a whole lot to eat!

WTH!

I remember when the average price of stuff in the store was in the $1.29 - $1.79 range.  Now it seems like EVERYTHING is $3 or more!

Cereal is outrageous.  Juices are outrageous.  Even a frozen pizza can run you $6.00 and that's for a basic one.

I swear, I can't beleive how little I got for my money.  The dog is happy though.  $10 of it went to treats for her smile

I spend at least 150 a week and the cashiers always act shocked- oh you are spending so much. I have five people to feed, four of us three meals a day plus snacks! I hate the grocery store!furious

EXACTLY!

Some of the frozen pizza's are TWELVE BUCKS!  I agree completely, at that price I'll get an actual fresh pizza!

I LOVE Crispex cereal.  I eat it as a snack when I watch TV.  It's better than a salty snack for me I figure.  But at $4.69 or something a box I've been switching to Roundy's Crispy Cereal which is the knock-off.  I don't know if it's psychological or what, but they just don't taste the same, and the peices seem smaller.

The price is smaller too though, almost half actually.

Today I bought two boxes of the real thing.

I agree, it is out of control. We're spending about $140/week for the three of us.

They claim it is the increased fuel costs, but I don't buy it. When you divide the increased fuel cost over the number of items on the truck, the numbers just don't support the increased in prices over the last few months.

I think they are using the fuel prices as an excuse to do a little price gouging.

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN IT!

These prices have nothing to do with Bill Clinton OR George Bush!

First of all, as much as I hate gas prices it is STILL cheaper than it was in 1982 when adjusted for inflation!

There's no reason gas should stay at $1 for eternity while every other product you use goes up in price!

My mother talks about how her and my dads first apartment in 1967 cost them $90 a month! Is it the presidents fault I can't get an apartment for that price?

How about we drop gas prices back to $1.29 and we put your salary back ten years too? You ok with that? Then we'll keep your salary there forever.

You hate George Bush so you blame everything that goes wrong on him and ignore the realities of a VERY faulty Clinton administration. We'll leave his pathetic morals out of this ("Hey kids, if you work really hard you can grow up to be president and get blow jobs under your desk, then lie under oath to a grand jury about it") and just talk about his policies.

The guy sold us out to the Chinese, had almost NO will to direct the military (news flash, Bin Laden was CREATED under Clintons watch. He SHOULD have been stopped then too, but instead Clinton ignored him and inadvertanly LET 9/11 happen), Enron was BUILT under Clinton and crashed under Bush. The "great" economy you enjoyed during the Clinton years was a FRICKIN' BUBBLE that EVERYONE involved in economics seems to be able to aknowledge but not a single Democrat can admit too.

The country, UNDER CLINTONS ADMINISTRATION, got too hyped about the internet and dumped billions into it. Stocks went crazy. People were getting rich. Suddenly people realized they weren't making money on their websites OR on internet advertising, and the bubble burst just in time for Bush to take office. Economy goes in the dump becasue of it.

MEANWHILE, through all this crap of the war and the hatred Bush is dealing with the Dow Jones just keeps rising and rising (this time NOT on a specific bubble). Peoples 401k's are thriving again as record highs are recorded week after week.

But who cares right? WE HATE BUSH! Anything good that happened the last 7 years MUST be the result of Bill Clinton.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!

Hah, trying buying organic! And I don't buy everything organic, just the stuff that I can't eat the regular version of. I don't see how some people afford to buy everything organic.

Apparantly it costs a lot more to include less sugar hmm.gif

yea yea yea.
lets be pragmatic here- you know the economy is a direct reflection of the confidence people have in their nation and its leaders.

in 1998,
you could fill up a 10 gallon tank with gas for $9, and have a buck left over for a big coffee.

in 1998, corporations were begging for college students. $20,000 sign on bonuses, full training....

I am not saying Bill Clinton was the cause, I am just saying things were better for the pocketbook when he was.

Oh he made peace not war too. smile

Even as the prices of food and groceries get higher and higher, none of us are seeing raises with our jobs either. There is no balance.

If I got a cost of living raise every now and then that would be okay, but I'm making the same amount of money as I was when the price of gas was under $2 and groceries were about 30% cheaper each week.

I just can't find it in myself to feel to sorry for anyone, including myself.

All I see when I look around is people driving HUGE vehicles, so they're apparantly not too concerned about gas, and bigger and bigger houses being built.

I think America is fine, we just always want more, more, more.

Don't get me wrong, I know some of us have it rough. I know Woo has had to work two jobs and so has her husband. I know several forum members have had tough times, myself included. But the answer isn't sitting in the oval office, and the blame doesn't belong there either. It's far more involved than that.

Eating healthy is way more expensive. BUt I guess in the long run what you spend on food, you save on medical bills down the road.

They said that dairy is increasing this summer- and everything gets affected: $5 a gallon for milk, and then everything from ice cream to yogurt goes up too.

Not any President's fault BTW!

Healthy is more expensive isn't it...that's probably why this country is the FATTEST it's ever been. Obesity is a big problem here in the USA!!

OH!  I almost forgot!  EGGS!  EGGS!

I try to buy egg beaters because real eggs are so high in cholestoral and fat.

But I could get a dozen eggs for .69.  The equivelant in egg beaters is almost $6.00!

That's a big price difference to eat healthy.  And I LOVE eggs.

Sometimes I actually buy a dozen, and just add the egg white (which has no fat or cholestoral) to the egg beaters so the egg beaters go farther.

And then, sometimes I wonder.

My grandma cooked everything in lard.  She ate fried everything.  Real eggs, bacon, sausage were the normal breakfast.

REAL BUTTER on everything.  She's still kickin at 85.

Maybe we overdo it with the healthy foods hmm.gif

I think if you can control how much you eat- the way you eat it- fried, etc... can be more acceptable. Plus if you are burning the calories by moving even better!

The big vehicle/gas thing is sticky.

Lets say you already have a big SUV.  The trade in value right now is pathetic because they are hard to sell with the gas price this high. So, to trade in your SUV for a more fuel efficient car, you are going to take a big hit on the trade in, plus the expense of the new car.

So what are you going to do?

Are you going to come up with thousands of dollars to buy that new fuel efficient car, or start a new monthly payment for an auto loan . . . or are you going to just spend the extra $50 it takes to fill up that bigger tank today?

Most people I know are just spending the extra $50 now, complaining about it, and hoping that the price will come back down before it is time to fill up again. I have my doubts that the kind of gas we are using now will ever get back down to even $2.50 again.

I heard the other day that even with the prices the way they are now, gas usage is still up 3% (I don't remember the time frame that was compared to). In a market with little competition, as long as there are people willing to pay the price, the price will stay.

You're right.  People are in a sticky situation.  But it's of their own making, and it shouldn't have been too far of a leap to see it coming.

More and more SUVS getting half the mileage (if that) of a car is going to lead to more demand.  Coupled with an ever growing world population, the fact is we brought this on ourselves.

Believe me, I was as hurt by this as anyone.  I drive a minivan that gets 20 mpg on a good day.  I loved my driving job and the main reason I quit was it wasn't worth it anymore because I paid for my own gas and the company wasn't helping enough with prices.

But I don't blame anyone.  It's just the way it is.

We all love the free market society when it brings us lower prices, but it works both ways.  Demand makes for higher prices.

if we all drove cars that got 50 mpg gas prices would drop.  If we walked or biked more, gas prices would drop.

This doesn't mean I don't think the oil companies gouge us, I KNOW they do.  But they do because we let them.

So you're right, as long as we pay, prices will stay hmm.gif
